Before adopting a Catahoula Leopard Dog, ask the rescue for evidence about the individual dog’s energy, enrichment, behavior with animals and people, housetraining, bite or injury history, health records, and behavior that has not yet been observed. Then arrange a supervised meet-and-greet, read the adoption agreement and return policy, and book your own veterinarian visit promptly after adoption.
The breed’s reputation is useful only for planning. Vetstreet calls the Catahoula “first and foremost a working dog,” but activity level, sociability, handling tolerance, and medical status vary by dog. A careful conversation with the foster home is more informative than a breed label.

Start with questions about this dog, not assumptions about the breed
Ask the foster or rescue to describe specific situations rather than using broad terms such as “good with dogs” or “high energy.” You need to know what the dog did, where it happened, who was present, and how often the behavior has been seen.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- “What is his energy level, and what exercise or enrichment helps him settle?”
- “How is he around other animals?”
- “Is he housetrained?”
- “Has he ever bitten or hurt anyone that you know of?”
- “Are there any known health issues?”
Ask how long the dog has been in the rescue’s care and whether the description comes from a foster home, a shelter kennel, transport, or several settings. A dog may behave differently after decompression, during a move, or in a quiet home. One Catahoula rescue explains that its profile reflects what it could evaluate while the dog was in foster care and aims to share both positive and negative temperament information. That is useful transparency, but it also shows why unobserved situations must be treated as unknown.

Questions about daily life, exercise, and enrichment
Find the dog’s real activity pattern
Ask what a normal day looks like: wake-up time, walks, play, training, naps, and time alone. “Needs exercise” is too vague unless the foster can explain what has worked. Ask whether the dog settles after a walk, prefers sniffing or retrieving, enjoys training games, or becomes restless, vocal, destructive, or difficult to handle when under-stimulated.
Vetstreet describes the Catahoula as athletic and in need of substantial exercise and companionship, while also noting that activity varies between individuals. Use that as a planning prompt, not a prediction. Compare the dog’s observed routine with your work hours, outdoor access, weather, travel, and ability to provide daily interaction.
Ask what enrichment is safe and effective
Ask which food puzzles, scent games, chew items, training exercises, or structured play the foster uses. Find out whether the dog guards toys or food, becomes over-aroused during play, or can disengage on cue. Ask what happens when enrichment ends and whether the dog can relax indoors.
Clarify time alone and transitions
Ask how long the dog has been left alone, where, and with what result. A foster’s answer should distinguish between a tested absence and a guess. Ask about crate use, door-dashing, car travel, leash loading, and reactions to changes in routine.
Check compatibility with everyone in your household
Children
Ask whether the dog has interacted with children, their ages, and the setting. A calm response to older, quiet children does not establish how the dog will react to toddlers, running games, hugging, grabbing, noise, or visiting children. Ask what adults supervised, what the dog’s body language looked like, and whether the dog sought distance or became tense.

Dogs, cats, livestock, and other animals
Ask which species the dog has actually met and how introductions were conducted. “Good with dogs” might mean one calm adult dog in a neutral yard; it does not answer whether the dog can share a home, pass dogs on leash, or live with a cat. Ask about resident dogs, cats, livestock, small animals, and wildlife separately.
For a household with another dog, request a controlled meet-and-greet under rescue guidance. Ask what equipment and spacing will be used, how either dog can retreat, and what signs would end the session. Never rely on an unsupervised first meeting at home.
Visitors and unfamiliar people
Ask how the dog responds to delivery workers, guests entering the home, people wearing hats or uniforms, and strangers approaching on walks. Ask whether the dog barks, hides, freezes, pulls, jumps, guards a person, or relaxes after an introduction. Also ask whether the dog has been handled by rescue staff of different ages, genders, and physical abilities.
Handling and routine care
Ask about collars, harnesses, paws, ears, brushing, nail trims, bathing, restraint, and veterinary handling. A dog that accepts familiar foster handling may still need a gradual plan for a new person. Ask what cues and rewards make care easier.
Ask directly about behavior risks and unknowns
Bites, injuries, guarding, and incidents
Ask: “Has he ever bitten or hurt anyone that you know of?” Request the complete context: what happened immediately before, whether skin was broken, where the bite occurred, who was involved, what happened afterward, and what management is now required. Also ask about air snaps, muzzle use, lunging, chasing, fights, resource guarding, escape attempts, and predatory behavior.

A rescue should be able to distinguish a documented incident from an absence of reports. “No known bite history” does not mean a bite is impossible, particularly when the dog’s background is incomplete. Ask which behaviors require active management and whether a qualified behavior professional has evaluated them.
Separate observed facts from predictions
Ask the foster to label each answer as observed, reported by a previous owner, inferred, or unknown. Important unknowns include behavior around infants, cats, livestock, crowded public places, being left alone for a full workday, and living with another dog. Plan a gradual introduction and supervision for anything not tested.
Personality, age, and shelter behavior
Ask the dog’s estimated age, how that estimate was made, and whether the dog’s personality changed after leaving the shelter or transport. Ask what the dog is like when tired, excited, frustrated, startled, and relaxed. A kennel presentation can exaggerate stress; a foster description may be more representative, but it still cannot guarantee behavior in every future setting.
Verify housetraining and the transition routine
Ask whether the dog is reliably housetrained or simply has had few accidents in a particular foster setup. Find out the current schedule, feeding times, door cue, preferred toilet surface, overnight routine, and how accidents are handled. Ask whether marking, submissive urination, diarrhea, or anxiety-related accidents have occurred.
Request the food brand or diet type, portion schedule, treats, medications, walking equipment, verbal cues, sleeping location, and settling routine. Keeping these elements consistent for the first days can make it easier to identify stress or medical problems rather than confusing every change at once.

Review health information and obtain the records
Request documented veterinary care
Ask for copies of examination notes, vaccination dates, parasite tests and treatments, sterilization records, microchip information, laboratory results, imaging, prescriptions, and discharge instructions. Ask what care is included in the adoption fee and what follow-up remains your responsibility.
Ask about hearing, vision, movement, and pain
Ask specifically about hearing and vision, skin and ears, teeth, weight, gait, stiffness, limping, difficulty rising, exercise intolerance, and signs of pain. Vetstreet identifies hip dysplasia and deafness as health susceptibilities associated with the breed. That information is a reason to inspect this dog’s records and observations; it is not evidence that the dog has either condition.
Plan your own veterinary examination
Arrange a prompt appointment with your veterinarian after adoption and bring every record the rescue provides. Ask the rescue whether any time-sensitive recheck, medication refill, vaccine, parasite treatment, orthopedic assessment, hearing evaluation, or other follow-up has been recommended. Do not stop prescribed medication or change the diet without veterinary guidance.

| Process element | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Application and interview | What information is required, who reviews it, and how long does approval usually take? | Sets expectations and reveals whether the rescue evaluates your schedule, experience, household, and plans. |
| References and landlord checks | Are veterinary, personal, or landlord references required? What permission is needed? | Confirms housing and care arrangements before a meet-and-greet. |
| Home visit | Is a home visit required, virtual or in person, and what safety issues are assessed? | Identifies fencing, exits, resident animals, and practical transition concerns. |
| Meet-and-greet | Can every household member attend? Can resident animals be introduced safely? | Provides direct compatibility evidence under controlled conditions. |
| Fee and included care | What does the fee cover, and which future costs remain due? | Prevents surprises about veterinary care, equipment, transport, or licensing. |
| Written agreement | May you read the contract before payment? What happens if placement fails? | Defines ownership, care obligations, restrictions, and return requirements. |
Blackjack Animal Rescue describes an application, veterinary and personal references, discussion of experience and home environment, a home visit, and a meet-and-greet. Janeen’s Catahoula Leopard Dog Rescue describes an application, phone interview, veterinary and landlord checks, approval, meet-and-greet, and contract review. Catahoula Rescue of New England: Houlas & Heelers gives another example of an organization-specific application, reference, home-visit, meet-and-greet, and agreement process. None of these examples should be assumed to apply to another rescue.

Read the return policy before you commit
Ask exactly what you must do if the adoption cannot continue. Does the dog have to be returned to the rescue, and within what timeframe? Is transfer to another home prohibited? Who pays transport or emergency care? Whom do you contact outside business hours?
Blackjack Animal Rescue states in its adoption agreement that “if for any reason the adopters can no longer supply a home for the dog that the rescue will take the dog back into our care without hesitation.” That describes Blackjack’s agreement only. Other organizations may require prior approval, impose different procedures, or provide different levels of support. The signed contract controls.
Use the meet-and-greet as an information-gathering session
- Bring every household member who will interact with the dog, following the rescue’s safety instructions.
- Ask the foster to demonstrate ordinary routines such as clipping the leash, asking for a sit, walking, settling, and handling paws or ears.
- Observe loose body language, recovery after a surprise, ability to disengage, and response to rewards rather than focusing only on whether the dog appears friendly.
- Introduce resident animals only in the controlled manner recommended by the rescue; stop if either animal shows escalating fear, aggression, or inability to recover.
- Write down answers and unresolved questions immediately so enthusiasm does not erase important details.
A single meeting cannot predict every future behavior. Treat it as one data point alongside foster reports, records, and the contract.

Prepare equipment and the first-week plan
Before pickup, prepare an ID tag, fitted collar, standard leash, secure walking equipment selected with the foster’s input, and stainless-steel bowls. Blackjack Animal Rescue’s checklist specifically recommends checking with the foster about walking equipment and using stainless-steel bowls.
- Set up a quiet decompression area separated from visitors and resident animals.
- Use the foster’s food, schedule, cues, and bathroom routine initially when practical.
- Keep doors, gates, and vehicle exits secure while the dog learns the new environment.
- Limit introductions and high-stimulation outings until you understand the dog’s recovery and coping skills.
- Schedule the veterinary appointment and save the rescue’s contact information before pickup.
Where to search and how to compare opportunities
Vetstreet names Petfinder, Adopt-a-Pet, and the American Catahoula Association rescue network as places to find adoptable dogs or breed rescue. Treat a listing as a starting point, not proof that the profile is complete or that the dog has been tested in your household’s circumstances.
If you are comparing two dogs or two rescues, use the same questions for each:
- Does the observed activity and enrichment pattern fit your daily routine?
- What direct evidence exists for children, resident animals, visitors, handling, and time alone?
- Which medical and behavior records are available, and what remains unknown?
- Can all household members meet the dog under safe conditions?
- Will the rescue share records, explain its contract, and provide clear post-placement support?
- What does the return policy require if the match fails?

- What equipment, food, cues, and routines should I continue?
- Who do I call if a behavior or medical concern appears after adoption?

There is no single adoption-outcome statistic or breed-wide risk percentage in the available materials that can predict whether a particular Catahoula will fit your home. The strongest decision comes from matching your household to documented observations, acknowledging unknowns, and choosing a rescue whose screening and support you understand.
