The CATLINK Scooper Open-X is an open-top automatic litter box with a sifting cycle, app connectivity and a 12 L waste drawer. Its roomy open design may make access and cleaning easier, but the 13.8-inch entrance, large footprint and rear-sensor concern deserve attention before you buy. CATLINK’s specifications are manufacturer claims; the hands-on observations below are attributed to Cats.com reviewer Katelynn Sobus, not to Animalso testing.
What the CATLINK Scooper Open-X is
The Open-X is a self-cleaning litter box with an open design rather than an enclosed globe. After use, it separates clumps from clean litter and transfers waste to a drawer. CATLINK describes a partial or “incomplete” gear system that leaves the entrance open. That may suit cats that avoid enclosed boxes, though it also means the unit does not provide the same physical enclosure as a covered design.

CATLINK’s U.S. product page lists assembled dimensions of 25.6 × 23.6 × 27.5 inches (65 × 60 × 70 cm) and an entrance height of 13.8 inches (35 cm). The company recommends leaving six inches of clearance on every side for sensor performance and maintenance access. Measure the usable space, including clearance, and consider whether your cat can comfortably step over the entrance.

What CATLINK says is included and supported
CATLINK lists a 12 L waste drawer and estimates that one cat can use it for up to 15 days. That is a company estimate, not a dependable emptying interval for every cat or household; usage, clump size and litter habits affect how quickly the drawer fills.

The manufacturer says the Open-X supports clumping litter and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A third-party-hosted manual listing names mineral sand, bentonite, mixed sand and tofu litter among compatible clumping types. For litter preparation and operating instructions, follow the manual supplied with the current unit rather than relying on a third-party copy.
The listed package contents are:
- Main unit and four legs
- One waste-bag roll containing 20 liners
- Odor eliminator and litter pad
- Adapter, user manual and general litter filter screen
The product page does not establish the liner dimensions or whether generic bags fit, so check before buying replacements.
Odor control: what the evidence supports
CATLINK describes an odor-control system combining an odor eliminator with a sealed waste drawer. That is a design claim, not a guarantee that the room or box will remain odor-free. In her review, Katelynn Sobus of Cats.com rated odor control 3/5 after more than a month of testing in a multi-cat home. Her score is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus rating or a controlled odor measurement.

CATLINK’s comparison page says the Scooper SE controls odor more effectively during elimination than the Open-X. That is the manufacturer’s comparison; it does not establish how either model will perform in a particular home.
Safety sensors and suitability
CATLINK says the Open-X uses infrared, weight and anti-pinch sensors, and says its incomplete gear design keeps the entrance open. CATLINK’s product page states: “The unique incomplete gear design ensures the entrance always stays open, so your cat can come and go safely at any time.” Treat that as the company’s product claim, not proof that every hazard is prevented or that the unit has independent safety certification.
Sobus reported concern that there appeared to be fewer sensors at the rear than at the front. This is one reviewer’s observation; the available evidence does not establish a failure rate or an independent safety ranking. Supervise your cat’s introduction to an automatic box and consult the current manual for operating precautions.

The official product material reviewed does not establish a minimum cat age or weight. Secondary sources have given inconsistent thresholds, so do not rely on an unsourced number. Check the manual packaged with the current unit or ask CATLINK support; if its current manual specifies a minimum, do not run automatic cycles for a kitten below that threshold.

Cats.com reviewer Katelynn Sobus reported testing the Open-X for more than a month in a multi-cat home. The review gave the product an overall 4.2/5, with scores of 5/5 for easy cleaning, 3/5 for odor control, 5/5 for appearance, 4/5 for building and 4/5 for price. These are the reviewer’s ratings, not an Animalso test or a broader user consensus.
The reviewer said the open style was easy to keep clean and was liked by the test cats. Assembly and app connection were reported as quick after the reviewer corrected the orientation of the waste screen. That orientation detail is a useful reminder to follow the supplied setup instructions carefully.

Price, warranty and variants
At the time the current U.S. product page was accessed in 2026, CATLINK listed the single-cat Open-X at $169, with free U.S. shipping, a one-year warranty and 90-day returns. These are changeable storefront terms, not promises for every seller or region; confirm the current price, return conditions and warranty before ordering.
CATLINK’s U.S. storefront also lists a multi-cat Open-X variant. The single-cat product page says multi-cat recognition may be unlocked in the app for a one-time $30 fee. Verify whether that offer is still available in your region and what the current app terms say before treating it as a feature or cost of ownership.

The Open-X may be worth considering if you want an automatic sifting box with an open top, can accommodate its dimensions and entry height, and are comfortable following the manual’s safety and setup instructions. It may be a less suitable fit if you need an enclosed box, have limited floor space, or need independently established evidence about sensor coverage or odor performance.
When comparing it with another automatic box, focus on the factors that affect your home rather than relying on a generalized safety ranking: open versus enclosed layout, footprint and step-in height, clumping-litter compatibility, waste capacity and emptying frequency, sensor layout, odor containment, cleaning access, app and multi-cat features, and the verified price and support terms for your market.
