Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in cats is a cancer of cells lining the skin or mouth, and those two forms behave differently. Skin SCC is strongly associated with chronic ultraviolet exposure and may be treatable when found while superficial. Oral SCC can invade nearby tissue and bone, is often painful, and may be difficult to control. A recurring sore or changes in eating, drooling, or bleeding deserve prompt veterinary assessment; only tissue sampling can confirm SCC.

How skin and oral SCC differ

Feline SCC is not one uniform disease. Its location affects the signs, diagnostic workup, treatment possibilities, and outlook.

Form Typical pattern What matters for care
Cutaneous (skin) Often occurs on lightly pigmented or white, sparsely haired areas exposed to sunlight, including ear tips, nose, eyelids, lips, and temples. It is often slowly progressive. Whether the lesion is superficial, how many sites are affected, and whether it can be completely removed or controlled locally.
Oral (mouth) Often locally aggressive, painful, and capable of invading surrounding tissue or jawbone. It may be mistaken for dental disease. Tumor position and size, bone involvement, ability to eat, and whether meaningful local control is feasible.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine says oral cavity tumors account for about 3% of feline cancers, and about three-fourths of oral cavity tumors are SCC. Cornell also reports that about one-third of cats diagnosed with skin SCC have multiple lesions. These figures describe different groups and should not be combined into an individual cat’s risk estimate. Cornell’s SCC overview discusses both forms.

Causes and risk factors

Skin SCC: sunlight is the clearest known association

Chronic ultraviolet exposure is the strongest established association for cutaneous SCC in cats. UV radiation can damage DNA, and tumors are more often seen on lightly pigmented or white skin with little hair. As Cornell oncology specialist Margaret McEntee, DVM, explains, “The ultraviolet radiation of the sun damages the cat’s DNA.” She calls sunlight the strongest association observed for this type of cancer. This association does not mean every sun-exposed cat will develop SCC, or that every skin lesion is cancer.

Oral SCC: proposed links are not proven causes

The cause of oral SCC is not established. Chronic inflammation or dental disease is suspected as a possible association. Cornell also discusses proposed links with tobacco smoke, flea-collar chemicals, and tuna-containing canned food, but notes that these have not been statistically confirmed. They should not be treated as proven causes, and the evidence does not establish a consumer product that prevents feline SCC.

What are the symptoms?

Skin signs

A skin lesion may first resemble a small scab or scratch, then persist, recur after seeming to heal, ulcerate, ooze, swell, or erode nearby tissue. Check especially the nose, ear tips, eyelids, lips, and other sparsely haired areas. Temporary flaking does not rule out a serious problem if the spot returns.

Mouth signs

Oral SCC may cause pain and interfere with eating. A cat may approach food but stop because chewing hurts. Possible signs include:

  • Drooling, blood-tinged saliva, or blood around food and water.
  • Foul breath, facial or jaw swelling, or difficulty eating.
  • Reduced grooming or other changes in normal behavior.

These signs are not specific to cancer; dental disease and other conditions can look similar. A painful cat may not tolerate an awake mouth examination, so do not try to force one at home. Arrange prompt veterinary evaluation for a persistent, recurring, ulcerated, or bleeding skin lesion, or for oral changes.

How is SCC diagnosed and staged?

Diagnosis answers what a lesion is; staging and treatment planning assess how far it extends and what treatment could realistically accomplish. Symptoms or photographs alone cannot confirm SCC. A veterinarian examines the cat and obtains tissue for biopsy or other sampling; a pathologist’s examination establishes the diagnosis.

The rest of the workup depends on tumor site and the cat’s condition. For oral tumors, the veterinary team may examine the mouth under sedation or anesthesia and use CT to map invasion into nearby tissues or bone. Adequate imaging helps surgeons assess whether removal is possible; attempting surgery without defining extent can leave tumor behind. Bloodwork, chest radiographs, and evaluation or sampling of regional lymph nodes may also be part of staging. The University of Pennsylvania Ryan Veterinary Hospital describes biopsy or aspirate followed by assessment of health and spread, including chest imaging and lymph-node sampling, in its client handout on SCC in cats.

What treatment options are available?

There is no single best treatment for every cat. A veterinarian considers the tumor’s site, size, depth or bone invasion, stage, resectability, the cat’s other illnesses, and the likely effects on comfort and eating. An oncology referral may help when treatment is complex or when comparing surgery, radiation, and palliative care. The options below are clinical decisions, not a menu for owners to select or try at home.

Early or superficial skin lesions

When a lesion is small and accessible, surgery may remove it. Depending on depth, number, location, and available services, veterinarians may also consider radiation or other local approaches. Cornell describes radiation for selected multiple facial lesions less than approximately 2 mm deep, as well as cryotherapy or direct intratumoral chemotherapy in selected cases. The 2026 American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) oncology guidelines list surgery, radiation when excision is incomplete, strontium for very superficial lesions, photodynamic therapy, electrochemotherapy, and topical imiquimod among options for early superficial cutaneous SCC. Availability and suitability vary; the treating veterinarian should explain expected control, side effects, and treatment burden.

Advanced or bulky skin lesions

Deeper or more extensive disease may invade surrounding tissue and make complete surgery difficult. The discussion then turns on what can be removed or controlled, the likely effect on nearby structures, and whether the expected benefit justifies treatment and recovery. Outcomes are more guarded when bulky invasive disease cannot be removed.

Oral SCC

Wide surgery may require removal of substantial jaw tissue, and some tumors cannot be removed safely or completely. Radiation may be used after incomplete removal or with palliative intent when surgery is not feasible. Chemotherapy may be discussed, though treatment decisions depend on the individual case. Pain and inflammation management, along with nutritional or feeding support, may be important to comfort and function. Ask the veterinarian how a proposed plan is expected to affect eating, pain, adverse effects, appointment and anesthesia burden, and time at home.

North Carolina State University’s oral SCC guidance emphasizes specialist-led decisions about treatment and palliative care. Medication should not be used as an owner-directed substitute for diagnosis and veterinary care.

What is the prognosis?

Outlook depends on whether SCC is cutaneous or oral, the tumor’s site and extent, and whether treatment can control it. Early cutaneous SCC is often treatable, and AAHA says early superficial lesions can be cured; advanced, invasive lesions are more difficult. Do not apply oral-cancer survival figures to skin SCC.

For oral SCC, institutional summaries describe a generally poor prognosis, but the figures are estimates rather than an individual prediction:

Source and date Reported oral SCC estimate Qualification
North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, undated page accessed in 2026 About 2–4 months; fewer than 10% of cats survive to one year after diagnosis. Approximate prognosis across surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation; outcome varies with location, size, and metastasis at diagnosis.
American Animal Hospital Association, 2026 Median survival time approximately 3–6 months. Reported in AAHA’s common cancers table; a median is not a prediction for an individual cat.

For a specific cat, ask the veterinary team what the tests show, what a treatment is realistically intended to achieve, and how comfort and eating will be monitored. AAHA’s 2026 oncology guidelines summarize common cancers and treatment considerations.
