Catnip can trigger a brief, noticeable behavior change in some cats, but “high” is only casual shorthand—not a precise scientific description. The herb is Nepeta cataria, a member of the mint family. Its main active compound, nepetalactone, can make a susceptible cat seem relaxed, playful, excited or, occasionally, agitated. Other cats show no visible response at all.
The effect is optional enrichment, not a requirement for feline health. A cat that ignores catnip is normal, and a cat that becomes overstimulated should not be given more. Safe toy construction and observation matter more than trying to produce a particular reaction.

What does “high on catnip” actually mean?
When people say a cat is “high,” they are describing what they see: rolling, rubbing, sudden playfulness, intense interest in a toy, or a period of unusual calm. Veterinary guidance describes the response as a short-lived behavioral change that can range from relaxation to excitement. That wording is important. It describes observable behavior, not proof that a cat is experiencing intoxication in the same sense as a person using a recreational drug.
Catnip is not established as a drug equivalent, and the evidence summarized by veterinary sources does not justify promising a specific mood, level of stimulation or duration. One cat may become mellow; another may race around or vocalize; a third may walk away. The same cat can also react differently depending on context, the form of catnip and its own temperament.

The response is associated with nepetalactone, a chemical in catnip. The behavior is considered genetically determined, so exposure alone cannot make every cat react. A lack of response is not a sign that anything is wrong with your cat.
What is catnip?
Catnip is the common name for Nepeta cataria, an herb in the mint family. Commercial catnip may appear as dried leaves, loose flakes, a spray or material packed into a toy. Those formats all aim to expose a cat to the herb’s scent, but they do not guarantee the same result.
Nepetalactone is the principal compound associated with the feline response. The important practical point is that cats generally encounter catnip as an enrichment scent, not as a treatment or a nutritional requirement. There is no evidence in the supplied veterinary guidance for a universal dose, a required schedule or a product-specific amount that reliably produces a reaction, so this article does not prescribe one.
How common is the response?
Not every cat responds. Veterinary pages from VCA use two slightly different approximate descriptions: one says approximately 50% of cats do not respond at all, while another says over half respond. Those statements should be read as a rough indication of substantial individual variation, not as a settled, precise population statistic. The available material does not identify a dated primary study that verifies an exact percentage.
Several factors can explain why two cats behave differently:
- Genetics: the ability to respond is described as genetically determined.
- Age: young kittens generally do not respond until around six months of age.
- Individual temperament: a naturally cautious, excitable or easily frustrated cat may show a different outward reaction.
- Form and freshness: a cat may ignore one toy or batch yet investigate another. That does not establish that a particular product is universally stronger or better.
Do not keep adding catnip to force a reaction. If your cat is uninterested, treat that as a normal result and use another enrichment activity.

The response can move in opposite directions, which is why “catnip makes cats hyper” is incomplete. Watch your cat rather than relying on a product description.

Relaxation and social behavior
A responsive cat may rub its face or body on the source, roll, settle down or appear unusually content. Some cats become more interested in gentle interaction. Relaxation is a valid response; catnip does not have to produce frantic play to be “working.”
Excitement and play
Other cats become animated, chase or bat at a toy, vocalize, or move rapidly around the room. This excitement should remain manageable. Give the cat space, keep the session supervised and let the effect pass rather than repeatedly presenting more catnip.
Agitation or overstimulation
A cat can appear tense, frustrated or more aggressive instead of relaxed. If the behavior looks uncomfortable, stop offering catnip and remove the scented item. Do not interpret agitation as a stronger or better “high.” Use a different enrichment option once the cat has settled.
How to try catnip safely
Catnip is best treated as a small, optional experiment. The goal is to observe whether your cat enjoys it, not to produce a guaranteed reaction.
- Choose a controlled setting. Offer it in a familiar area free of hazards, open windows or other animals that could increase stress.
- Start with one format. Use a catnip toy or a small amount of loose herb near an appropriate play or scratching area. Because no universal dose is established, avoid turning the trial into repeated applications.
- Observe without forcing contact. Let the cat approach, sniff or ignore the item. Do not hold the herb against the nose or restrain the cat to make it interact.
- Monitor the whole response. Look for relaxed, playful or excited behavior, and also for tension, hissing, swatting or other signs that the cat is uncomfortable.
- End an unpleasant session. If the cat becomes agitated, remove the catnip and discontinue its use for that cat. Select a different enrichment activity instead.
- Store the material securely. Keep loose catnip and toys where they will not be scattered, chewed unsupervised or mixed with household items.
There is no evidence here for a dosing schedule, a required break period or a maximum amount that applies to every cat. Follow the individual response, and ask your veterinarian if your cat has a medical or behavioral condition that makes stimulation a concern.

Using catnip with a scratching post
Catnip can be placed on or around a scratching post to attract a cat’s attention and encourage use of that permitted surface. This is an enrichment strategy, not a guarantee. Some cats will investigate the post; others will ignore the herb or continue preferring a different texture or location.
Put the post where the cat already spends time, and make sure it is stable enough not to tip. If catnip causes excitement that leads to rough handling, remove it and rely on the post’s location, texture and play-based encouragement instead. The purpose is to redirect scratching, not to create a particular emotional state.
Catnip toys: the safety checks that matter
The herb is only one part of the risk assessment. A catnip toy still has to be a safe toy.

Avoid toys with small pieces that could come loose and be swallowed.
- Reject linear hazards. String-like, thread-like or other linear components can detach and be ingested, so do not leave toys with those parts available for unsupervised chewing.
- Check seams and damage. Remove a toy when fabric, stuffing or a container begins to tear.
- Supervise active play. Watch how your cat actually uses the toy; a product that is safe for batting may be unsuitable for a cat that immediately chews and tears it.
- Separate cats if needed. If one cat guards or attacks a catnip toy, offer enrichment individually rather than allowing competition.
These precautions apply whether the toy contains dried catnip, a scented insert or another form of enrichment. If you suspect a swallowed toy component, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.
Loose herb, toy or scratching post: which format should you choose?
There is no evidence-backed universal “best” catnip product. Choose the delivery format that fits your cat’s behavior and lets you supervise safely.
| Format | Useful when | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Loose dried catnip | You want to place a small amount near a toy or scratching post and observe scent interest directly. | Scattering, cleanup and the temptation to keep adding more when the cat does not respond. |
| Catnip toy | Your cat prefers batting, rubbing or carrying an object during enrichment. | Loose seams, small detachable parts and string-like pieces that could be swallowed. |
| Catnip around a scratching post | You are trying to make an approved scratching surface more interesting. | The cat may still prefer another surface, and excitement can make handling rougher. |
The decisive comparison is your cat’s actual response: interested or indifferent, calm or overstimulated, and safe or destructive with the item.

Do kittens respond to catnip?
Young kittens generally do not respond until around six months of age, according to VCA guidance. A kitten that ignores catnip is therefore unsurprising. Do not increase the amount or repeatedly expose a kitten in an attempt to trigger a reaction.

Even an adult cat may never respond because sensitivity varies genetically. Use age-appropriate toys, supervise play and prioritize construction safety over whether the toy contains catnip.
Is catnip addictive?
VCA states that catnip is not addictive. A cat may show intense interest during a short response, but that behavior should not be treated as evidence of dependence. Catnip is optional enrichment, and a cat does not need it to be healthy or happy.
Because the response is brief and variable, avoid framing catnip as a way to manage ongoing anxiety, aggression or other medical problems. If a behavior concern persists outside a catnip session, discuss it with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than trying to solve it by increasing exposure.
When should you stop using it?
Stop the session immediately if your cat becomes agitated, aggressive, frightened or difficult to handle. Remove the catnip source, provide a quiet area and allow the cat to settle without further stimulation. If the behavior does not return to normal, or if anyone is injured, seek veterinary advice.

You should also retire a catnip toy when it is torn, shedding pieces or being chewed apart. The safest enrichment is the one your cat can use without swallowing material or escalating conflict with people or other animals.

Common misconceptions
“Every cat gets hyper.”
No. Responses range from relaxation to excitement, and many cats show none.
“A stronger reaction means the cat is healthier.”
No. Sensitivity is variable and genetically influenced. A calm response, no response or a decision to stop because of agitation can all be normal outcomes.
“If a cat ignores catnip, the product failed.”
Not necessarily. The cat may be among those that do not respond, may be too young, or may simply prefer another form of enrichment.

There is no established universal dose or schedule supporting that approach. Repeatedly adding more can create mess or unwanted stimulation without changing a genetically determined response.
The practical answer
Catnip can make some cats look briefly “high,” but the scientifically cautious description is a short-lived behavioral response to an herb containing nepetalactone. It may be calming, exciting or unpleasant, and it may not happen at all. Offer it only as optional enrichment, supervise the interaction, stop if your cat becomes agitated, and choose toys without small or linear parts that can detach and be swallowed.
