What “in heat” means for a female cat
Heat is the common term for estrus, the stage of the reproductive cycle when a female cat is sexually receptive. It is a hormonal reproductive state, not simply anxiety, boredom, or excess energy. The most noticeable signs are behavioral, so owners may mistake heat for a problem that can be solved with a calming toy or herb.

Typical signs of estrus
- Persistent or unusually loud vocalization, often especially at night
- Increased affection, rubbing against people or furniture, and seeking attention
- Rolling on the floor
- Raising the hindquarters and moving the tail to one side when stroked along the back
- Restlessness or attempts to get outside
- More frequent urination or urine spraying in some cats
Behavior can vary considerably between individuals. A quiet cat can still be in heat, and a very vocal cat may have another medical or behavioral problem. If the signs are sudden, severe, or accompanied by illness, a veterinary examination is more appropriate than trying catnip.

These signs are communication and mating-related behaviors, not proof that the cat is in pain or being deliberately difficult. Punishing calling, rubbing, or posturing can increase stress and does not change the reproductive cycle. The useful question is whether the cat is otherwise well and whether she can be kept safely away from males until veterinary care is arranged.

How long a heat period lasts
VCA Animal Hospitals reports an average estrus period of about seven days, with a reported range of one to 21 days. If a cat is not mated, the time out of heat is usually around seven days, with a reported range of two to 19 days. These are clinical ranges, not a forecast for one particular cat. Heat can return repeatedly, especially in an unspayed cat exposed to long periods of daylight.
In practice, a cat may seem quieter and then begin calling again. That pattern does not establish that catnip worked or that the reproductive risk has ended. Keep a simple calendar of vocalizing, posturing, spraying, and quiet intervals; it can help your veterinarian assess the pattern, particularly if episodes seem unusually long or frequent.
Pregnancy is possible at any time while the female is in heat. A short quiet period does not prove that the reproductive risk has passed, and allowing outdoor access even briefly can result in mating.
Why catnip does not reliably help a cat in heat
Catnip changes behavior only in some cats
Catnip contains nepetalactone, a plant compound that can trigger a temporary behavioral response. VCA describes responses ranging from relaxation to excitement and notes that approximately 50% of cats do not respond. A cat may sniff, rub, roll, play, become sedated, or become more animated; another cat may show no noticeable change.
The response is also short-lived. A cat that appears calmer after a catnip toy may simply be experiencing a brief enrichment effect, while an aroused cat may become more vocal or active. Neither reaction demonstrates that estrus has ended.
Because response is individual, a product that seemed pleasant months ago may not produce the same visible reaction today. Do not increase the amount or keep offering it in an attempt to force a result. More exposure cannot turn catnip into a reproductive treatment, and chewing a toy creates an avoidable ingestion hazard.

No established effect on the heat cycle
Veterinary guidance on catnip and veterinary guidance on feline estrus do not establish that catnip stops a heat cycle, shortens it, suppresses ovulation, changes reproductive hormones, or prevents mating. There is therefore no evidence-based dose, schedule, or product that can be recommended as a heat remedy. Promising that catnip will soothe every cat in heat overstates what is known.

She may resume calling, rubbing, posturing, or trying to escape when the effect wears off. A behavioral pause is not a reliable way to time supervision, reunite her with a male, or decide that pregnancy prevention is no longer necessary.
When a catnip toy is reasonable
A catnip-filled toy can be offered as optional enrichment if your cat has previously responded well and remains comfortable around it. Treat it as a play item, not as medication or a way to prevent pregnancy.
- Choose a simple, intact toy. Check seams and remove loose material, strings, feathers, or small parts that could be swallowed.
- Supervise the first sessions. Watch whether your cat becomes relaxed, playful, agitated, or uninterested. Stop if the response is intense or unpleasant.
- Limit access. Put the toy away after play rather than leaving it available continuously. This preserves novelty and reduces chewing or ingestion.
- Do not force exposure. Rubbing catnip on a cat, putting it in food, or repeatedly offering it will not make a nonresponsive cat benefit.
- Monitor for illness. If your cat vomits, develops diarrhea, or otherwise seems unwell after chewing or ingesting catnip, remove the product and contact a veterinarian.
The ASPCA identifies nepetalactone as catnip’s toxic principle and lists vomiting and diarrhea among possible clinical signs. For a suspected ingestion of a concerning amount, contact a local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control service rather than waiting for the cat to deteriorate.
Do not substitute catnip for prescribed medication, and do not give human sedatives or other household products to quiet calling. If the cat is already ill, pregnant, or has swallowed part of a toy, tell the veterinarian what she encountered and approximately when.
What to do while your cat is in heat
Prevent mating first
Keep the cat indoors with secure doors, windows, and screens. Close gaps around balconies, garages, and pet doors. Separate her completely from intact males, including males in the same household. Do not rely on a screen door, a brief outdoor break, or the assumption that a male cat is too young or too familiar to mate.

Because pregnancy can occur during any part of estrus, prevention has priority over attempts to quiet the behavior. If an escape or possible mating occurred, tell your veterinarian exactly when it happened; do not try to manage the situation with catnip or human medication.
Reduce stress without claiming to stop estrus
Provide a quiet room, predictable feeding times, clean litter boxes, hiding places, and short play sessions with toys your cat already enjoys. Close curtains if outdoor cats are provoking her, and use gentle interaction rather than punishment for vocalizing or spraying. These steps may make the household easier to manage, but they do not end the reproductive cycle.
Check that everyone in the home follows the same door and window rules. A single unsupervised opening can provide an opportunity for mating. If visitors, children, or contractors will be coming and going, place the cat in a secure room before the door opens and verify that screens and latches are closed afterward.

If she sprays, clean affected areas with an appropriate enzymatic cleaner and keep extra litter boxes in quiet locations. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which can smell like urine to a cat. Persistent urination outside the box, straining, blood, or frequent attempts to urinate requires veterinary attention because urinary disease can resemble marking.
Spaying is the reliable reproductive solution
Spaying removes the reproductive organs, prevents pregnancy, and stops future estrous cycles. It addresses the cause of heat rather than temporarily changing how a cat behaves during one episode.
VCA states that a cat can be spayed while she is in heat. However, blood flow to the reproductive tract is increased during estrus, which may slightly increase bleeding risk and can affect the surgeon’s preferred timing. Ask your veterinarian whether to proceed now or schedule the operation after the current cycle, based on the cat’s age, health, pregnancy risk, and the clinic’s protocol. Do not postpone a consultation merely because she is already calling.

When you call, mention that she is intact and showing heat signs, whether she could have encountered a male, and any medical conditions or medications. The clinic can explain its scheduling policy and whether an examination or pregnancy assessment is needed. Until the appointment, continue complete separation from males; arranging surgery does not protect against a mating that occurs before the procedure.

Contact a veterinarian promptly if the behavior is accompanied by lethargy, weakness, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, a swollen or painful abdomen, foul-smelling discharge, blood from the genital area, difficulty urinating, or collapse. These signs are not explained by normal heat behavior and can indicate illness requiring treatment.
Arrange an appointment if vocalization persists far beyond the reported heat ranges, occurs in a cat that is already spayed, or is paired with substantial weight loss, increased thirst, or changes in appetite. A veterinarian can distinguish estrus from pain, urinary disease, endocrine disorders, pregnancy, or other conditions.
Practical answers to common questions
Will catnip calm my cat in heat?
It might briefly relax a responsive cat, but it might instead stimulate her or have no effect. It cannot be relied on to calm heat behavior or shorten estrus.
