Most families do not need to give up a cat when a baby is on the way. The real precautions are specific: reduce exposure to toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, keep pets out of the baby’s sleep space, and supervise interactions as children grow. Here is what the evidence supports—and what it does not.
Do you have to give up your cat when you’re pregnant?
No. The American Academy of Pediatrics says families do not need to give up their cat. The concern is not ordinary cat ownership; it is avoiding exposure to Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. A person newly infected shortly before or during pregnancy can pass the infection to the fetus, even if the pregnant person has no symptoms. Reduce exposure when handling litter
- Ask someone else to change the litter during pregnancy if possible.
- If you must handle it, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. CDC also recommends changing litter daily.
- Keep the litter box away from children and food-preparation areas.
- Feed cats commercially prepared food rather than raw or undercooked meat, and keep them indoors to reduce hunting-related exposure.
These steps reduce exposure; gloves alone do not make litter handling risk-free. Ask your clinician about a specific exposure or pregnancy concern.
Can you get toxoplasmosis just by being near a cat?
The cited public-health guidance describes infection through accidental ingestion of the parasite—not simply being near a cat. Cat feces can contaminate hands, objects, or soil, and contaminated soil can be another exposure route. Food and water can also carry risk, so litter is not the only concern. The CDC’s explanation of how toxoplasmosis spreads also identifies contaminated or undercooked meat and shellfish, unwashed produce, soil, and water as possible sources.

Pregnancy prevention extends beyond the litter box
- Wash hands after gardening or touching soil that could be contaminated.
- Wash produce and prepare food safely, including cooking meat thoroughly.
- Wash hands after handling raw meat and before eating.
Discuss a possible exposure with a clinician, who can advise on your individual circumstances.
Can a cat sleep in a baby’s crib?
No: keep cats out of the crib, bassinet, and other infant sleep spaces. CDC safe-sleep guidance calls for placing babies on their backs on a firm, flat, approved sleep surface with only a fitted sheet; the space should be free of soft objects. Applying that clear-space rule means pets should not share the baby’s sleep area. The guidance does not provide a cat-specific estimate of sleep-related harm, so there is no basis here for assigning cats a quantified risk. See the CDC safe-sleep recommendations.

Keep the sleep space separate
- Put your baby on their back for every sleep.
- Use a firm, flat, approved crib or bassinet surface with a fitted sheet only; leave out pillows, blankets, toys, and other soft objects.
- Room-share with caregivers, but do not bed-share.
- Keep the cat out of the crib or bassinet, including when the baby is not in it.
Will a cat suffocate a baby by “sucking the air” away?
No authoritative evidence identified for this article supports the folklore that a cat can suck air from a baby’s lungs. That claim should not be presented as a proven mechanism. The practical advice is simpler and evidence-based: keep the infant’s sleep space clear and separate, and supervise contact between cats and young children.
Are cat bites and scratches harmless?
No. Cat bites and scratches can spread germs. CDC says about 20–80% of reported cat bites and scratches become infected; that range refers to reported injuries, not ordinary contact with cats. CDC advises supervising children around cats, avoiding rough play, and teaching children to tell an adult if they are bitten or scratched. See the CDC cat-health guidance.

What to do after a bite or scratch
- Wash the wound promptly with warm, soapy water.
- Seek medical advice for a serious wound, signs of infection such as redness, pain, warmth, or swelling, or if the cat appears sick.
- Contact a clinician if you are unsure whether the cat is vaccinated against rabies or if your last tetanus shot was more than five years ago. Follow local medical advice for the specific incident.
Do cats prevent or cause allergies in babies?
The sources cited here do not establish that living with a cat prevents infant allergies or guarantees that a baby will develop them. Neither causal claim should be treated as settled on this evidence. If your baby has allergy symptoms or you are considering a change to the household, ask your pediatrician for advice based on the child’s health.
