Yes, cats and children can live together safely. The essentials are active adult supervision, gentle handling, clean separation between children and litter areas, and a cat-only place to retreat. Families preparing for a baby can make changes gradually and keep the cat out of infant sleep spaces. Pregnancy calls for sensible litter precautions—not automatically giving up a cat.

1. Supervise young children around cats

Stay close enough to intervene whenever a young child and cat are together. The CDC says, “Always supervise children around cats to prevent bites and scratches.” A child may not notice that play has become too rough, and even a familiar, calm cat can react when frightened or uncomfortable.

Do not leave a baby or young child alone with a cat. Supervision protects the child and gives the cat a chance to move away before a situation escalates.

2. Teach children to respect the cat’s boundaries

Show children how to interact calmly and predictably. They should not chase, corner, tease, grab, pull a cat’s tail or ears, or roughhouse with it. Keep faces away from the cat, and teach children not to disturb it while it is eating or sleeping.

Make the rule simple: if the cat walks away, let it go. Children should tell an adult promptly if a cat scratches or bites them rather than hiding the incident.

3. Give the cat a child-free retreat

Set aside a quiet place where the cat can rest without being followed or handled. This is practical household management rather than a specific official requirement, but it makes it easier for the cat to get distance when it wants it. Keep the retreat inaccessible to children when an adult cannot supervise.

4. Prepare gradually for a newborn

Set up the nursery and decide on household routines before the baby arrives. If another caregiver will take over tasks the cat associates with a parent, such as feeding or play, ASPCA advises shifting those routines one to two months before birth where possible. Gradual changes give the cat time to adjust.

5. Keep cats out of infant sleep spaces

Do not allow the cat into the crib or other places where the baby sleeps. ASPCA advises, “Close the door to the nursery when the baby is napping.” If the room has no door, use an appropriate barrier to keep the cat out; do not assume a particular product has been safety-tested for this purpose.

6. Keep litter and food areas away from children

Place the litter box where children cannot access it and away from food-preparation areas. The CDC recommends changing litter daily and washing hands after cleaning it. Keep children away while litter is being handled, and wash hands after contact with the cat or its supplies as well.

7. Understand toxoplasmosis and pregnancy precautions

Toxoplasmosis is not acquired only by touching a cat. Exposure can also come from undercooked meat, contaminated produce, soil, and sand. A person newly infected during pregnancy can pass the infection to the fetus, so prevention matters—but simply having or petting a cat is not the only route.

If possible, ask someone else to clean the litter box during pregnancy. If you must do it, the CDC advises wearing disposable gloves and washing hands afterward. Daily litter removal matters because the parasite in cat feces takes time to become infectious; the CDC says this can take one to five days. Gloves are also a sensible precaution when gardening or handling soil that may be contaminated.

8. Wash bites and scratches promptly

Wash a bite or scratch immediately with warm, soapy water. Contact the child’s pediatrician whenever an animal bite breaks the skin. Seek medical attention for a serious wound, a cat that appears sick, unknown rabies vaccination status, redness, pain, warmth or swelling around the injury, or if the child’s tetanus shot was more than five years ago. For an unprovoked bite from a stray cat or a cat with unknown vaccination status, CDC advises contacting animal control or the local health department. A clinician or local public-health authority can advise on the specific incident.

The CDC reports that about 20–80% of reported cat bites and scratches become infected. That figure applies to reported injuries, not to all contact with cats; the total number of incidents is unknown because many are not reported.

9. Choose a cat that fits your household

There is no universally best age, breed, or type of cat for a family. Consider the child’s ability to handle an animal gently, the time available for daily care, the cat’s temperament and activity level, and any family history of allergies or asthma. Kittens can be especially lively and may bite during play; a calmer adult cat may suit some households better, but individual temperament matters.

The AAP says children are usually ready to handle and care for a pet around age 5 or 6. Treat that as a general developmental guide, not a fixed cutoff: children vary, and adults remain responsible for the animal’s care.

10. Keep up with veterinary care

Arrange regular veterinary care and keep routine vaccinations current, as the CDC recommends. A veterinarian can help you plan care for your cat and answer questions about its health or behavior.
