A perch may serve several purposes at once, and cats differ in which spots they prefer; no single explanation applies to every cat.
Why do cats love elevated perches?
The AAFP/ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines explain that “Access to an elevated area increases the cat’s vertical space and allows it to monitor its environment.” That observation helps explain why a cat might settle on a shelf, cat tree, or window perch, but it does not mean every cat wants the highest spot available.

1. To watch what is happening
From above, a cat can observe activity in the room without being in the middle of it. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines identify monitoring the environment as one function of elevated space.

A raised location can let a cat survey its surroundings from a spot that feels sheltered. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes cats exploring vertical spaces and surveying from protected locations.

3. To get some distance
A high resting place can create space from people or other animals. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that elevated resting spots can give a cat a break from other pets or children.
4. To use more of their home
A perch adds territory upward, using space that might otherwise go unused. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines treat elevated areas as part of a cat’s environment, alongside other resources and places to rest.

5. To navigate a home with multiple cats
In a shared home, cats may use different levels or routes to avoid some encounters. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines explain that elevated areas and separated resources can help cats avoid competition and stress. A perch can contribute to a more flexible environment, but one tower will not necessarily resolve tension between cats.

Some cats adopt a particular elevated place as a favored resting spot. Warmth may also attract a cat to a location, as PetMD discusses, but that is only one possible draw—not a universal reason cats climb.

7. To watch outdoors
A window perch combines height with a view beyond the room. It may appeal to a cat that likes watching outdoor activity; it is one option rather than a requirement for feline enrichment.
8. Because each cat has its own preferences
Cats may favor different heights and locations, or use the same perch for more than one reason. A cat’s choice of a high spot does not, by itself, prove that it is stressed, ill, or actively hunting.

How to choose and set up a perch
Cat trees, shelves, and window perches can all provide vertical space. Choose based on the cat and the room rather than assuming one style is best.

- Prioritize stability: Match the perch to the cat’s size, follow installation directions, and secure mounted items appropriately. Keep nearby objects from falling if the cat jumps or shifts position.
- Make the route usable: Arrange shelves in a step pattern or provide another practical way up and down.
- Allow for mobility: For an older cat or one with limited mobility, place steps near a favorite elevated spot, as PetMD’s guidance on why cats like high places suggests.
- Think about shared access: In a multi-cat home, consider whether cats can reach and leave elevated spots without being trapped or blocked. Distribute important resources so cats have options to avoid each other.
