Daily brushing or combing is the clearest supported home step for preventing hairballs: it removes loose fur before your cat can swallow it. There is no evidence in the veterinary sources below for seven fast natural remedies that reliably clear an active hairball. If your cat is repeatedly retching or vomiting, do not wait for a home remedy—hairballs can obstruct the digestive tract, and hacking can also have another cause.
How hairballs form—and why hacking needs attention
Cats swallow loose hair while grooming. Most of it passes through the digestive tract, but some can collect into a hairball. A hairball can sometimes block the digestive tract and become life-threatening. Also, a hacking episode is not proof that a hairball is the cause; respiratory problems such as asthma can look similar.

Because repeated retching or vomiting may indicate an obstruction or another illness, focus on prevention at home and seek veterinary care for concerning symptoms rather than trying to make an active problem pass.
1. Brush or comb away loose fur
Gentle, routine brushing or combing is the most clearly supported practical home prevention measure. Removing loose fur from the coat reduces the amount your cat can swallow while grooming. Cornell recommends daily brushing and combing to minimize hairballs and related complications. Choose a brush or comb that suits your cat’s coat and is comfortable for them. Work gently, stop if your cat becomes distressed, and remove collected fur from the tool. Long-haired cats are more prone to hairballs, and daily grooming may be especially useful for them. If your cat will not tolerate brushing, ask a veterinarian whether professional grooming is appropriate; a haircut is not a universal or instant fix.
2. Ask your veterinarian about a hairball diet
Some diets formulated for hairballs contain higher levels of fiber intended to help move hair through the gastrointestinal tract and reduce accumulation. They are not automatically right for every cat. Ask your veterinarian whether a hairball-specific diet fits your cat’s health and existing nutrition needs before changing foods. 3. Use hairball gels only with veterinary direction
Oil-based hairball gels are sold as over-the-counter supplements, but they are not a do-it-yourself treatment for a suspected blockage. Ask your veterinarian whether a gel is suitable for your cat and follow their directions. Cornell also cautions against giving laxatives without veterinary approval and supervision. VCA Animal Hospitals: Digestive Lubricants and Hairball Gels; Cornell Feline Health Center: The Danger of Hairballs.
4. Find out why your cat is overgrooming
Excessive grooming can mean your cat is swallowing more hair, but it may also point to a skin problem or allergy. If grooming seems unusually frequent or focused on one area, have your veterinarian assess the underlying cause instead of relying on a hairball remedy. 5. Keep string and other dangerous objects out of reach
Household prevention also means securing thread, paper clips, twist-wraps, and similar objects. If swallowed, foreign material can cause dangerous complications. This is a way to reduce ingestion risks, not a treatment for a hairball that has already formed. Cornell Feline Health Center: The Danger of Hairballs.
Do kitchen remedies quickly clear hairballs?
The veterinary sources cited here do not establish oils, butter, pumpkin, extra water, or other kitchen remedies as effective treatments for an active hairball or obstruction. VCA discusses water and wet food as part of general hairball-prevention guidance, but that does not show they quickly dissolve or remove a blockage. Do not give home laxatives or improvise a dose; ask a veterinarian what, if anything, is appropriate for your cat.

When should a cat with retching or vomiting see a veterinarian?
Seek veterinary care without delay if your cat has repeated unproductive retching or true vomiting, becomes lethargic, or refuses food. Cornell also recommends prompt assessment when vomiting happens more than once a week or occurs alongside lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, increased thirst or urination, or diarrhea. Warning signs listed by VCA that warrant immediate care include fever, abdominal pain, dehydration, blood, suspected ingestion of a foreign object or toxic substance, and loss of appetite.
