Cats Fighting? How to Separate Them and What to Do Next

Separate fighting cats safely, give them time to calm down, and use a gradual, cause-focused plan to prevent another conflict.

Separate the cats safely: do not put your hands between them, punish them, or let them “fight it out.” Use a large towel, blanket, or sturdy visual barrier to guide them apart, then close each cat in a separate room. Give them time to settle, check for injuries, and contact a veterinarian if either cat may be hurt or the aggression is sudden or unexplained.

How to stop a cat fight safely

  1. Keep your hands and body out of the fight. Do not grab an aroused cat or reach between the cats. The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines recommend “safely separating the cats involved, putting them in separate rooms with doors closed.” A large towel or blanket, or a visual barrier such as cardboard, can help interrupt contact while reducing the risk of injury to you.
  2. Separate them behind closed doors. Guide each cat into a different room if you can do so without handling them. Keep them apart until both have calmed and returned to their usual routines. The AAFP says this may take a few hours to a couple of days; the right interval depends on the cats.
  3. Do not punish them or force another encounter. Yelling, physical punishment, and forcing the cats to “work it out” can make fear and tension worse. As the ASPCA advises, “Never let the cats ‘fight it out.’”
  4. Check each cat from a safe distance. Look for wounds or changes in movement, appetite, or behavior. For a wound, suspected injury, or other concerning symptom, contact a veterinarian for advice rather than trying to judge the seriousness yourself.

Is it play, tension, or a real fight?

Look at the whole interaction, not one sound or movement in isolation. Play is generally reciprocal: the cats switch roles, lean forward, and do not cause damage. Conflict is more concerning when pursuit is sustained and one-sided, or when one cat repeatedly postures, blocks access, swats, attacks, growls, or hisses while the other retreats or avoids the area.

Tension can also be quiet. Repeated staring, occupying a doorway or route, freezing, and avoiding food, litter, resting spots, or other shared areas can signal that one cat is making the other feel unsafe. Note what happened before an incident, where it occurred, each cat’s body language, and whether either cat could leave.

Why cats in the same home may start fighting

A fight does not establish its own cause. Conflict can follow the arrival of a new cat, a return home after a veterinary visit, social maturity, or another change in the home. Competition over resources or routes, fear, pain, illness, or redirected arousal—such as agitation triggered by an outdoor cat seen through a window—may also contribute.

Keep a brief incident log with the time and location, what happened beforehand, the cats’ behavior, and recent household changes. Share it with your veterinarian. The ASPCA says a complete veterinary examination is the first step in resolving aggression; illness or pain can cause or contribute to behavior changes. A medical assessment should come before assuming the problem is purely social or behavioral.

How to reintroduce cats after a fight

Reintroduction is gradual, not a timed countdown. Keep the cats in separate rooms at first, with each cat able to reach its own essential resources. Move forward only while both can remain calm; if tension returns, end the exposure calmly and go back to an easier step.

  1. Let both cats decompress. Wait until they are settled rather than trying to restart contact immediately. Keep them physically apart between sessions if needed to prevent another incident.
  2. Begin with low-pressure scent and sound exposure. Let the cats notice one another indirectly from separate spaces. Avoid putting either cat in a position where it cannot retreat.
  3. Create positive associations across a closed door. Offer food or play on opposite sides of the door, at a distance where each cat remains relaxed. If either cat will not settle, increase the distance or stop for now.
  4. Try brief, controlled visual sessions. Use a secure barrier and enough distance for both cats to stay comfortable. Keep sessions short and pair calm presence with food or play when each cat is receptive.
  5. Increase exposure gradually. Extend or adjust sessions only when both cats remain relaxed. If either growls, hisses, swats, freezes, or shows escalating distress, calmly end the session and return to an earlier stage.

There is no reliable number of days that fits every pair. The ASPCA describes a gradual process that can take days to weeks; Cornell University’s guidance notes that some cases take weeks to months. Severe reintegration can take longer.

Look for specific triggers and reduce them when practical. For example, if an outdoor cat at a window appears to trigger arousal, limit that visual access. Synthetic pheromones may help in some cases, but responses vary and effects can be subtle; a diffuser is not a guaranteed solution. Medication is a veterinarian’s decision and should support—not replace—environmental changes and behavior work.

When to involve a veterinarian or behavior professional

Contact a veterinarian for wounds, suspected pain or illness, sudden aggression, or repeated conflict. Ask whether referral to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or another appropriately qualified behavior professional would help if the situation is severe, persistent, or difficult to manage safely.
