Yes—cats have a highly developed sense of smell. They use ordinary nasal odors and other chemical cues to judge their surroundings, navigate social relationships, and decide whether a place feels familiar and secure. Veterinary environmental guidance treats olfactory information as a core part of feline welfare, not a minor extra sense.
There is no well-established, source-verified number showing that a cat’s smell is a specific multiple stronger than a human’s. The useful answer is behavioral: scent is central to how cats explore, communicate, and respond to changes around them.

What makes a cat’s sense of smell “good”?
“Good” does not have to mean a precisely measured score against human noses. For cats, it means that smell supplies important information and that they act on it. The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines describe olfactory and chemical information as helping cats evaluate their surroundings and maximize security and comfort.
A cat entering a room is not simply detecting whether something smells pleasant. Its scent system can help sort familiar from unfamiliar conditions, identify chemical traces left by other animals, and investigate objects or locations that deserve closer attention. This is why a new animal, a moved piece of furniture, or a changed household odor can attract intense sniffing even when the change looks insignificant to a person.

The evidence supports a strong functional role, but it does not justify a universal claim such as “cats smell exactly X times better than people.” A secondary veterinary page has circulated numerical comparisons of receptor counts and sensitivity, yet those figures were not traceable to verified original evidence for this article. Treating them as settled facts would create false precision.
Two related chemical-sensing systems
Cats have ordinary nasal olfaction, which detects odors through receptors in the nose. They also have a vomeronasal organ (VNO), an auxiliary chemosensory pathway associated with chemical signals, including pheromone-related cues. These systems work alongside each other but should not be described as interchangeable.
| Pathway | What it detects | How it contributes to behavior | Evidence in the cited sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary nasal olfaction | Odor molecules carried into the nasal passage | Helps a cat investigate places, objects, animals, and familiar household scent profiles | Environmental and veterinary behavior guidance |
| Vomeronasal system | Particular chemical cues, including pheromone-associated signals | Adds information relevant to social and chemical investigation | Feline anatomy and veterinary references |
| Flehmen response | A behavior that helps route an interesting chemical cue toward the VNO | Allows closer analysis of a smell that has caught the cat’s attention | Veterinary references and a published chemos communication study |
A feline morphological study examined the vomeronasal organ and accessory olfactory bulb and described a single-pathway organization in cats, in contrast with the two-path model discussed for rodents and some other mammals. The anatomy is detailed in the study record at PubMed. This finding concerns the organization of the feline system; it is not a ranking of cats against humans.
How cats use scent in everyday life
Assessing a new environment
Smell helps a cat decide what is familiar and what needs investigation. A new room, carrier, blanket, visitor, or animal can carry a chemical profile that differs from the cat’s established environment. Sniffing gives the cat information before it chooses whether to approach, avoid, rub against, or mark the item.
The environmental-needs guidelines emphasize that familiar scent profiles matter to a cat’s sense of security. This is one reason a move, deep cleaning, renovation, or sudden rearrangement can be behaviorally significant even when food, water, and temperature remain unchanged.
Communicating through scent marks
Cats deposit scent as they rub, scratch, and urinate. These actions are not merely random mess-making: they place chemical information in locations that other cats can encounter. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s discussion of feline social behavior describes scent marking as part of how cats communicate and organize their social world.

Rubbing can leave facial and body scent on people, furniture, doorways, or other objects. Scratching leaves both a visible mark and scent from glands in the paws. Urine marking deposits a stronger and more conspicuous chemical signal. The exact meaning depends on context; a single behavior should not be treated as a complete translation of a cat’s emotional state.

Keeping track of familiar smells
Familiar scent is part of the background a cat uses to evaluate safety. If bedding or furniture must be changed, retaining some already familiar material can preserve continuity while the cat investigates the new item. Changes are best introduced in a way that lets the cat approach and withdraw rather than being forced to remain beside an unfamiliar odor.
This is an environmental principle, not a recommendation for a particular commercial product. The cited guidance does not require a scent diffuser, spray, or other product for a cat to use its normal smell system.
Why cats open their mouths after sniffing
The flehmen response
When a cat pauses with its mouth partly open, lifts its upper lip, and appears to grimace after investigating an odor, it may be showing the flehmen response. Veterinary references explain that this posture helps direct an interesting smell or chemical cue toward the vomeronasal organ. The expression can look like disgust, but in this context it is an odor-investigation behavior.
A cat may show flehmen after smelling urine, another animal, an outdoor scent brought indoors, or an unfamiliar object. It is not, by itself, proof that the cat is angry, frightened, sexually motivated, or ill. Those interpretations require the surrounding behavior and circumstances, and the cited material does not support assigning one fixed emotion to every flehmen display.
What happens during the investigation
- The cat encounters a smell that is especially interesting or chemically informative.
- It pauses and may hold its mouth open with the lips curled.
- The posture helps move the cue toward the vomeronasal system for additional analysis.
- The cat then resumes sniffing, moves away, marks, or changes its behavior according to the broader context.
A historical study of chemical communication and flehmen behavior is indexed at PubMed. The response is best understood as part of the cat’s sensory toolkit rather than as a facial expression with one guaranteed emotional meaning.

Can cats smell better than humans?
In practical terms, cats rely on smell more heavily than people do for many everyday decisions, and their anatomy includes specialized chemical sensing through the VNO. That supports calling their sense of smell highly developed.
However, “better” depends on what is being measured: detection threshold, discrimination between similar odors, ability to follow a scent trail, or behavioral importance. The sources cited here do not establish one validated cat-versus-human sensitivity ratio. A precise multiplier would imply a level of measurement that this evidence does not provide.
The safest comparison is therefore qualitative:
- Cats use odor and chemical cues extensively to evaluate security, territory, and social surroundings.
- Cats have both nasal olfaction and a vomeronasal pathway for chemical investigation.
- Humans can detect many odors, but scent is generally less central to our routine social communication and environmental assessment.
- No single number summarizes every kind of smell performance in both species.
Can cats recognize people by smell?
There is evidence that cats respond differently to familiar and unfamiliar human odors, but it is not proof that they can identify every individual person by scent alone.

That pattern is consistent with cats paying attention to odor familiarity.
The study’s authors also state that whether cats identify specific people by smell requires further investigation. The result should therefore be phrased narrowly: the cats showed different sniffing behavior toward unfamiliar and familiar human odors under the study conditions. It does not establish that a cat can reliably name or recognize any particular person from smell in every situation.
In a home, a cat may combine scent with visual cues, sound, routine, location, and the person’s behavior. A cat greeting someone who has been away may be responding to a changed scent profile, but the available study does not let us separate smell from all those other cues in ordinary household interactions.

What this means for life with a cat
During moves, cleaning, or redecorating
Because familiar scent contributes to environmental security, avoid treating every odor change as meaningless. When practical, leave some familiar bedding or furniture available while a cat explores altered rooms. Let the cat investigate at its own pace and maintain predictable access to food, water, litter, resting places, and escape routes.
This approach does not claim that every new smell is harmful. It recognizes that scent is information, and abrupt removal of all familiar cues can make an already changed environment harder for a cat to interpret.
When introducing another animal
Scent can precede direct contact. A cat may investigate bedding, carriers, or rooms that carry another animal’s odor before seeing that animal. Because the smell itself supplies information, rushing an introduction can remove the cat’s opportunity to assess the change gradually.
Observe the entire pattern rather than relying on one sniff or one flehmen response. Approach, retreat, rubbing, scratching, vocalization, posture, and marking all provide context, but no single signal has a universal translation.
When a cat marks or rubs
Rubbing and scratching can be normal scent-depositing behaviors. Urine marking also carries chemical information, although unwanted indoor marking can have multiple behavioral or medical contributors that are not resolved by interpreting smell alone. If marking is sudden, persistent, or accompanied by other changes, a veterinarian can assess the cat; the sources used for this article do not establish a diagnosis from scent behavior.
Common misconceptions about feline smell
“A flehmen face means the cat is disgusted”
Not necessarily. The open-mouth, curled-lip posture commonly helps route an interesting chemical cue toward the vomeronasal organ. It can look like a grimace without representing disgust.

“Cats identify every person by odor”
That conclusion goes beyond the 2025 study. The observed difference was longer investigation of unfamiliar human odor than familiar human odor, and the authors explicitly call for more work on identifying specific people.
“A scent mark has one fixed meaning”
Scent marking participates in communication, but its significance depends on location, timing, the cats involved, and the surrounding behavior. Rubbing, scratching, and urine marking should not be treated as interchangeable signals.
“There must be a settled numerical score for how much better cats smell”
No source cited here verifies a universal cat-to-human multiplier. A functional explanation is more defensible than repeating an untraceable receptor count or sensitivity ratio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe bottom line on a cat’s sense of smell
Cats do have a good—and behaviorally important—sense of smell. Nasal olfaction helps them investigate odors and familiar surroundings, while the vomeronasal organ provides an additional route for analyzing certain chemical cues. Scent supports marking, social communication, and environmental security, and the flehmen response is one visible sign of close chemical investigation.
The evidence supports a strong qualitative answer, not a precise numerical ranking against humans. Cats respond to odor familiarity, but current evidence also cautions against claiming that they can identify every individual person by smell alone.
