Can a cat near a sleeping baby be dangerous?
A cat near an infant’s face could obstruct breathing if it lies against the baby’s nose or mouth. How to make a baby’s sleep space safer
CDC guidance, published September 17, 2024, supports the 2022 AAP recommendations. The CDC advises placing babies on their backs for every sleep, including naps, on a firm, flat—not inclined—surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib with a fitted sheet. It also recommends room-sharing, ideally until at least 6 months, while keeping the baby’s sleep surface separate. See the CDC safe-sleep guidance.
The AAP likewise recommends an infant’s own sleep space: a crib, bassinet, or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet. Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft objects out. The AAP explains that soft objects or loose bedding can obstruct an infant’s nose and mouth and pose risks including suffocation, entrapment or wedging, and strangulation. Keep pets out of the infant’s sleep area
Use a closed door or another reliable barrier to keep the cat out of the crib, bassinet, or play yard. Do not rely on watching the cat as a substitute for a clear sleep space. This is a practical precaution against contact with the baby’s face and interference with the sleep area, alongside—not instead of—the CDC and AAP safe-sleep recommendations.

The CDC reports about 3,700 sleep-related deaths among U.S. babies in 2022. Separately, an AAP parent guide says around 3,500 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly while sleeping every year. These are different descriptions and time frames; neither figure identifies deaths caused by cats. The CDC’s sleep-related death data and the AAP guide should not be read as evidence for the folklore.
