Ask before taking a bite or offering one, accept a no without pressure, and consider serving a separate portion instead. The phrase is also the title of a children’s book, so the answer depends a little on whether you mean the everyday choice or the story.
How to decide whether to share your ice cream
Start by asking yourself whether you genuinely want to share. You do not have to give someone a taste just because they ask, and declining kindly does not require an explanation. If you are offering, make it an invitation rather than an expectation: “Would you like a taste?”

Ask before taking anything from someone else’s cone or container. A yes to sharing in general is not permission to take a bite without asking. If the person declines, let the answer stand without teasing or insisting.

Offer a separate serving when that fits
If you want to include someone but would rather not share from the same cone or container, offer a separate scoop or portion when one is available. That gives the other person a choice without making either person feel obliged to share in a particular way.

The setting and relationship can affect how an offer feels. A classroom kindness lesson from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation uses a story about one sister sharing after the other drops her ice cream to discuss compassion and helpfulness. It is an example for discussion, not a rule that children—or anyone else—must always share.
When “Should I Share My Ice Cream?” means the book
Should I Share My Ice Cream? is also an Elephant & Piggie book by Mo Willems. Disney Books describes Gerald as having “a big decision to make” and asks whether he will make it in time. The story centers on Gerald and Piggie’s friendship and his decision about sharing.
