A Royal Albatross tumbles onto its back while landing beside a chick at Taiaroa Head Nature Reserve in Dunedin, New Zealand. Royal Cam captured the moment during the 2021 breeding season. A reserve manager suggested a sudden change in wind was the most likely cause, but the available reporting does not confirm what caused the fall.
What happens in the landing clip?
The footage shows a chick looking toward the sea as an adult albatross approaches feet first, wings drawn back. Once its webbed feet touch down, the adult pitches forward, flips onto its back and pedals its legs in the air. It rights itself, pauses, then shuffles out of frame. The chick remains visible nearby.

The clip became a lighthearted viral moment partly because the adult recovers quickly while the chick appears to watch. Royal Cam’s account joked that “only the chick was watching.”
Why did the albatross fall?
Hoani Langsbury, tourism manager at Taiaroa Head Nature Reserve, told The Guardian that a sudden change in wind was the most likely reason for this fall. That is an informed suggestion, not a confirmed finding about the specific landing.

Langsbury also described albatross landings as “controlled crashing.” He said juvenile birds commonly crash-land and that birds returning to land after years at sea can be especially awkward. Those comments offer context for the clip; they do not establish that wind or inexperience caused this adult’s tumble.
What kind of albatross is it, and where was it filmed?
The bird is identified in the reporting as a northern Royal Albatross, a species endemic to New Zealand. The landing was filmed at Taiaroa Head Nature Reserve, near Dunedin on New Zealand’s South Island—not at the Hawaiian Laysan Albatross camera sometimes discussed in separate coverage.
