The Chambal basin’s rugged ravines and varied river habitats provide places where plants and animals can live, feed, nest, and find shelter. But the evidence does not show that infertile soil itself made biodiversity flourish. The stronger explanation is the mix of habitats—and, in some places, the difficult terrain that can act as a natural refuge.
What makes the Chambal basin a refuge for wildlife?
The National Chambal Sanctuary protects a long stretch of river and its surrounding habitats across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The Wildlife Institute of India describes it as a 600-kilometre protected stretch established in 1978 and calls it a major home for gharial and other wildlife. Its page explains that “the fauna of this sanctuary is not only protected by the people but also by nature through the intricate network of ravines.” Wildlife Institute of India: National Chambal Sanctuary

Ravines are steep, winding channels cut into the land. They can be hard for people to cross, and their varied shapes create different nooks and sheltered places. That offers a child-friendly way to understand how rugged terrain may help wildlife find refuge, though the available studies do not directly test how much ravines protect each species.
The sanctuary’s river habitats also support aquatic animals. An Uttar Pradesh ecotourism page describes gharial, freshwater turtles, otters, the Ganges river dolphin, and fish among its wildlife. It gives the tri-state sanctuary’s area as approximately 5,400 square kilometres; this is a different administrative description from the Wildlife Institute of India’s river-length figure. Why does a mix of habitats matter?
The Chambal is not just a river beside ravines. A 2009 botanical survey of a 110-kilometre stretch on the Rajasthan bank recognized five habitat types: ravine, flowing river, marshy river bed, sand bank, and cultivated land. Each has different conditions—such as flowing or still water, exposed sand, or land shaped by farming—that can suit different plants and animals.
The survey recorded 61 flowering-plant species, also called angiosperms, across its study area. The flowing-river habitat had the most recorded species, with 20. The survey also found differences in which plants grew in different habitats, including plant families found only in aquatic habitat. Those findings show why a varied landscape matters; they are not a current count of every plant in the entire Chambal basin. Chorghe, Rasal, and Khandal, flora survey, December 2009

The researchers also noted that ravines act as natural barriers to monsoon floodwaters. That is an observation about the landscape, not proof that ravines—or poor soil—caused all the biodiversity in the basin.

A Gharial Ecology Project report for its 2024 field season counted 451 gharial nests along about 425 kilometres of sanctuary. The report said 385 nests hatched successfully and that a post-hatch survey counted 9,554 hatchlings. These are observations from that project and season. They describe gharial nesting activity, not the total number of species in the basin or a long-term population trend. Gharial Ecology Project, 2024 field season report

Older research can add context, but it should be kept in its historical setting. A 1999 study reported a mean clutch size of 36.51 ± 0.65 eggs for nests monitored during 1987–1989. That figure describes those monitored nests, not every gharial nest today. Biological Conservation study, 1999
Does infertile soil explain the wildlife richness?
Not on the evidence described here. The title’s idea is an appealing question, but the cited sources do not establish that infertile soil caused biodiversity to flourish. Instead, they document a varied river landscape, distinct plant distributions among habitats, and a natural network of ravines that can offer refuge. It is more accurate to say that wildlife benefits from a mosaic of places than to credit soil infertility as the cause.

What challenges can threaten this refuge?
Protected areas are not free from human pressures. A government action-taken report names water extraction and diversion, land-use changes, sand mining, poaching, fishing, and cultivation along riverbanks among concerns for the Chambal. These pressures can affect the river and the habitats that wildlife depends on. Government action-taken report hosted by the National Green Tribunal
