A Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. It is commonly a friendly, people-oriented small companion, but individual size, coat, shedding, and temperament vary. What is a Cavapoo?
A Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The Poodle parent’s size and the traits inherited from both parents influence the puppy, but do not guarantee an exact adult size, appearance, coat, or temperament.

There is no single standardized Cavapoo appearance or temperament. Breeding labels cannot replace information about the individual puppy, its parents, and their family history.
Size, lifespan, and appearance
PetMD gives a general adult weight range of 8–25 pounds and a typical lifespan estimate of 12–15 years. Both are guide figures, not promises for a particular dog. Ask about the actual parents when considering expected adult size.
Coat texture and shedding
A Cavapoo’s coat may be curlier or straighter, depending on inherited traits. Some may shed less, but shedding and coat-care needs vary. Hair that stays in the coat can tangle and mat, so low visible shedding does not mean low maintenance.
No dog is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Low shedding does not establish that a dog is safe for a person with allergies. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the individual dog and seek medical advice as appropriate rather than relying on a breed label.

Cavapoo temperament and home fit
PetMD describes Cavapoos as friendly and playful, and notes that they often adapt to different home sizes when they receive attention. They may suit first-time dog owners and families whose children interact gently, but these are general tendencies, not guarantees. Each dog’s behavior is shaped by inherited traits, early experiences, training, and care.

Are Cavapoos good with children?

Exercise, enrichment, and training
Provide daily activity and opportunities to learn and explore, adjusted to the individual dog’s age, health, and behavior. Short walks, play, sniffing, and brief training sessions can all provide engagement. A home or apartment can work if the dog’s needs for activity, toileting, and companionship are met.
Use reward-based training and introduce handling calmly, including brushing and routine care. If you need help with training or alone-time skills, seek a qualified professional who uses humane, reward-based methods.
Grooming and routine care
Consistent coat care helps prevent tangles from becoming mats. PetMD recommends brushing about three times a week and professional grooming about every six weeks. These are general recommendations; the right schedule depends on the dog’s coat and needs.
Choosing a brush and grooming schedule
PetMD names a small slicker brush for curlier coats and a pin brush for straighter coats. Match the brush to the dog’s actual coat, use it gently, and introduce grooming calmly. Other routine care
- Ears and eyes: Check regularly and seek veterinary advice for persistent discharge, redness, discomfort, or other concerning changes.
- Teeth: Regular tooth cleaning and veterinary dental care are part of routine small-dog care. Use products intended for dogs and ask a veterinarian about an appropriate plan.

Cavapoo health considerations

Questions about parent health screening
The American Kennel Club lists patella evaluation, hip evaluation, cardiac examination, and ophthalmologist evaluation among recommended health tests for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The UK Kennel Club identifies mitral valve disease, syringomyelia, and eye conditions as important Cavalier screening areas. These recommendations concern Cavaliers and do not constitute a complete screening panel for every Cavapoo or Poodle variety.
Ask the breeder for actual records and the registered names of both parents. Ask which tests were completed for the Poodle parent and whether they are relevant to its variety. A veterinarian can help interpret records and advise on an individual dog’s health.
How to evaluate a Cavapoo breeder
- Ask for parent information and records. Request registered names and available health-screening documentation for both parents.
- Ask about the Poodle parent. Find out whether the parent is Toy or Miniature and which health checks were completed.
- Discuss family history. Ask what is known about health issues in the parents and relatives.
- Understand what tests show. A test addresses only what it was designed to assess; no single test is a complete health guarantee.
- Observe the dogs and their care. Where possible, meet the parent dogs and assess whether they appear comfortable and well cared for.
- Review the contract and records. Read the terms and ask for relevant veterinary, vaccination, and care information before committing.
- Evaluate claims critically. A crossbreed label or marketing description does not guarantee health, size, coat, or temperament.
Is a Cavapoo right for you?
A Cavapoo may suit someone looking for a small, interactive companion and able to provide regular attention, gradual alone-time training, consistent coat care, and veterinary care. Think carefully if you need a dog that is reliably allergy-safe, low-maintenance, or content without companionship. Individual dogs vary, so consider the actual dog and its parents rather than relying on the breed label alone.
