What is CBD oil for cats?
CBD oil is a liquid formulation containing cannabidiol (CBD), typically carried in an oil. Products marketed for cats may differ in CBD concentration, other ingredients, and whether they contain THC, another cannabis-derived compound. A product label can help identify what is claimed to be inside; it does not establish that the product is effective, safe for a particular cat, or approved for animal use.

Does CBD oil help cats?
The feline studies cited here investigated exposure, tolerability, or safety in healthy cats. They do not establish that CBD treats a diagnosed feline condition, and they do not provide an efficacy result that can be applied to household cats.

- Escalating cannabinoid doses: A controlled 2021 study assigned 20 healthy adult cats to five arms, including placebo oils and oils containing CBD, THC, or both. The researchers gave up to 11 escalating oral doses, at least three days apart. Observed adverse events were mild and transient in that study. Gastrointestinal events were more common with MCT formulations; lethargy, low body temperature, ataxia, and protrusion of the third eyelid were more common with THC-containing oils. Higher plasma levels after the combined CBD/THC oil suggested a possible interaction between those compounds. These findings apply to the study’s animals and formulations, not every retail product or cat. Read the study record on PubMed.
- Longer-term CBD tolerance: A randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled study evaluated THC-free CBD distillate in healthy cats. In one four-week study, 9 cats received CBD and 10 received placebo; in a separate 26-week study, 10 received CBD and 10 received placebo. Both protocols used 4 mg/kg of body weight daily. These are experimental study protocols, not home dosing recommendations, and the study addressed tolerance and safety rather than treatment of a diagnosed disease. - Single-dose pharmacokinetics: Eight healthy, purpose-bred cats received escalating single oral doses of CBD isolate in sunflower oil across six dose groups. The researchers assessed blood CBD levels, behavior, examinations, blood counts, and chemistry. The study informs pharmacokinetics and tolerability under its study conditions, not a therapeutic dose for a pet. Read the study record on PubMed.
How should you use CBD oil for a cat?
There is no general at-home dose supported by these studies. Study doses cannot be transferred directly to a pet: the researchers used defined formulations, selected healthy cats, and monitored them. A commercial label does not show that its contents match a study formulation or that it will benefit a cat with a particular condition.

Questions to check on a product label
- How much CBD does the label say is in a serving?
- What are all the listed ingredients and the carrier oil?
- Does the product state whether THC is present?
- Is batch-specific independent testing available, and does the manufacturer provide transparent documentation?
These checks help identify a product; they are not proof of safety, effectiveness, or FDA approval. The sources cited here do not verify any particular retail product.

What are the risks of CBD oil and THC for cats?
THC content matters. In the controlled feline study, certain observed signs were more common with THC-containing oils than with CBD oil alone. That result should not be generalized to every formulation or cat, and it does not provide a complete list of medication interactions. Because the study also suggested a possible CBD–THC interaction, tell the veterinarian about all medicines and supplements your cat takes.

The FDA lists lethargy, depression, heavy drooling, vomiting, agitation, tremors, and convulsions as possible signs of adverse effects after a pet ingests cannabis. Is CBD oil approved for cats in the United States?
No. The FDA states, “FDA has not approved cannabis for any use in animals.” It also says the 2018 Farm Bill did not remove its authority to regulate cannabis-derived products under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The agency cautions pet owners against animal cannabis products because it cannot ensure their safety or effectiveness, and recommends discussing treatment options with a veterinarian. This describes the U.S. federal position; rules elsewhere may differ.
In a specific April 7, 2025 enforcement action, the FDA warned Holista LLC, doing business as HolistaPet, that products including CBD oil for cats, cat treats, and calming chews were unapproved new animal drugs and unsafe under the FD&C Act based on the company’s therapeutic marketing claims. That action concerns the products and claims identified in the warning letter; it is not a finding that every product in those categories has identical facts. Read the FDA warning letter.

Separately, the FDA’s January 2025 request for information identified product selection, quality standards, potential benefits and drug interactions, adverse events, safety problems, and toxicological concerns as areas of interest. The request identifies questions under consideration; it does not resolve them. Read the FDA’s request for public comments.
The FDA’s approval of Epidiolex, a purified CBD drug for specified human seizure indications, does not amount to approval of CBD oil to treat cats. The agency separately says cannabis has not been approved for animal use.
