Does CBD oil help cats with cancer?
It has not been established that CBD oil treats cancer in cats. The studies described here did not enroll cats with cancer and did not measure whether CBD shrinks tumors, slows disease, relieves cancer-related symptoms, or extends life. Healthy-cat safety findings cannot answer those questions.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s general CBD overview says cancer-related research is ongoing and more research is needed. Its discussion includes canine and general research context; it is not evidence of a demonstrated benefit in feline cancer. FDA guidance for investigational oncology drugs likewise explains the safety, effectiveness, and labeling information drug sponsors should address. That guidance is context for the evidence expected of oncology claims, not evidence that CBD works against cancer.

What feline studies actually found
The two studies below provide information about tolerability under specific conditions. Neither tested CBD as cancer treatment, and their findings should not be used to choose a dose for a cat with cancer.

The findings are specific to the cats, products, doses, and study conditions. They are not a treatment protocol. In particular, the 4 mg/kg figure from the long-term healthy-cat study is not a recommended dose for a cat with cancer.
Is CBD oil safe for a cat on cancer treatment?
Safety alongside cancer treatment has not been established by the healthy-cat studies above. A cat’s diagnosis, current treatment, other medicines, and overall condition matter when assessing a proposed product. Ask the veterinarian overseeing the cancer care to review it before giving CBD; do not start, stop, or alter prescribed treatment on the basis of a product claim.

FDA’s January 15, 2025 notice soliciting public comments on cannabis-derived products in veterinary medicine identifies product use, selection, quality standards, possible benefits, drug interactions, adverse events, safety problems, and toxicological concerns as areas of interest. The notice is evidence that the agency is gathering information, not a finding that a particular benefit or interaction has been proved.
What does FDA say about CBD products for animals?
In the United States, FDA says it has not approved cannabis for any use in animals and cannot ensure the safety or effectiveness of products marketed for animals. The agency cautions pet owners against using cannabis products for animals and recommends discussing appropriate treatment options with a veterinarian. This regulatory statement does not mean every product has caused harm; it means FDA has not approved these products for animal use or assured their safety and effectiveness.

FDA also states that, under its interpretation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, animal food containing added CBD cannot be introduced into interstate commerce. This is a U.S. federal regulatory statement, not a description of rules in every country.
Rules differ by jurisdiction. As a separate Canadian example, Health Canada says veterinary drugs containing CBD would require review and approval, and its cited page reports that no veterinary drugs containing cannabis were authorized at the time the page was published. That page is not a current product directory and should not be applied to other countries.

When discussing a product with the veterinary team, bring the package or full label so they can assess the specific formulation and its ingredients in the context of the cat’s care. Do not treat a “THC-free” claim or a product category as proof of safety, efficacy, or compatibility with other medicines.
