Evanger offers several cat-food formats and recipes, but the label matters: at least one reviewed canned product is supplemental food, not a complete meal. The company’s current site lists cat food and a dry recipe, while independent reviewers give the brand different scores. A 2017 recall affected specified lots of dog food—not every Evanger cat recipe.
What Evanger cat food is available?
Evanger’s current website lists cat food, including Grain Free Catch of the Day for Cats in a 4.4 lb. bag, and groups its catalog into lines such as grain-free meat complements, EVX Restricted Diet, treats, and Heritage Classics. Product pages and stock can change, so check the live listing and package before buying: Evanger’s official site and product catalog.

Cats.com assigned 8/10 for species appropriateness, ingredient quality, product variety, and recall history; it rated price and customer experience 7/10 each. Catster highlighted meat-forward recipes and variety, while noting historical controversy. Read those scores as editorial judgments, not measurements of how every cat will respond.
Complete meal or supplemental food? Check the label
Do not assume that a canned cat food is a complete diet. Catster describes its reviewed Grain-Free Rabbit canned dog and cat food as supplemental food. A supplemental product is not intended to supply everything a cat needs as its sole food; confirm the package’s nutritional-adequacy statement before making it a regular meal. The reviewed recipe description alone does not establish the status of other Evanger products.

When comparing a can with a dry food, check the intended use, named protein, ingredients, feeding directions, and whether the label identifies it as complete and balanced or supplemental. If you are choosing food for an allergy, illness, or other medical need, involve your veterinarian; a recipe name or ingredient list is not a diagnosis or treatment plan.
Evanger cat food pros and cons
| Potential strengths | Considerations |
|---|---|
| Several formats and named-protein recipes appear in the reviewed range, including canned and dry foods. | Recipe availability can change, and product names alone do not establish nutritional adequacy. |
| Catster and Cats.com both gave the brand favorable overall assessments, with positive comments on variety and ingredient quality. | The ratings reflect different publishers’ criteria and are not controlled product tests. |
| Some recipes may suit owners seeking particular proteins or food formats. | At least one reviewed canned product is supplemental rather than a complete diet; read each product’s label. |
| Specialty and independent pet stores may carry the brand. | Cats.com says distribution is concentrated in those stores, limiting online review volume; anecdotal reviews cannot establish typical outcomes. |
What happened in the 2017 recall?
In January 2017, Evanger’s announced a voluntary recall of specified lots of Hunk of Beef after pentobarbital was detected in one lot of Hunk of Beef Au Jus. The FDA-hosted notice says five dogs became ill and one died after consuming affected product. The notice lists recalled lot codes beginning 1816E03HB, 1816E04HB, 1816E06HB, 1816E07HB, and 1816E13HB, with June 2020 expiration dates. This was a recall of specified dog-food lots, not a recall of every Evanger cat food. See the FDA-hosted Hunk of Beef recall notice.

A later FDA-posted notice expanded the affected products to specified lots of Evanger’s Hunk of Beef and Braised Beef, and Against the Grain Pulled Beef. It describes products manufactured between December 2015 and January 2017, with expiration dates from December 2019 through January 2021, and a voluntary recall because of potential pentobarbital adulteration. The product and lot scope matters: this notice does not establish a recall of all current cat recipes. Details are in the FDA-hosted recall expansion notice.
The FDA advisory index, as accessed for this review, displayed 2026 advisories involving other pet foods and did not list Evanger’s among the visible entries. That snapshot is not proof that no other complaints, notices, or safety issues exist; the FDA recall and withdrawal index can be checked for current postings.

What do customer reviews say?
Cats.com summarizes favorable customer comments about ingredients, variety, and skin and coat, alongside complaints about changes in color or consistency and cats refusing the food. It also notes that Evanger’s distribution is concentrated in specialty and independently owned pet stores, so online review volume is comparatively limited. These are review-site summaries, not representative survey results or proof of product-wide effects.
On Chewy’s Organics Braised Chicken Dinner review page, one reviewer on June 22, 2026 reported loose stools and raised concern about rusting can lids. This is one customer’s account; it does not establish how common the issue is, whether the product was faulty, or what caused the reported symptoms.

How to decide whether a recipe fits your cat
- Read the exact package’s nutritional-adequacy statement; do not treat a supplemental food as a sole diet.
- Match the food’s format and named ingredients to your cat’s needs, while remembering that ingredient labeling does not diagnose an allergy.
- Check current availability and the current package label, since catalog listings and formulations can change.
- Ask your veterinarian about food choices for a diagnosed condition or persistent symptoms.
- Keep the 2017 recall in context: it involved specified beef dog-food lots and should not be generalized to all cat recipes.
