A safe setup is not simply a bulb with a percentage printed on the box: species, Ferguson exposure zone, reflector, mesh, distance, bulb age, and the highest perch determine the ultraviolet index (UVI) your animal actually receives. For a veiled chameleon, one veterinary care guide targets UVI 2.5–3.0 at the basking site, while a 2024 Chameleon Academy infographic uses UVI 3 as a basking target and lists UVI 7.4 as the maximum cage UVI for Ferguson Zone 3. Treat those as source-specific guidance, measure your enclosure when possible, and provide a shaded retreat.
Why UVB matters to a chameleon
UVB is the part of daylight that drives cutaneous vitamin D3 production. Vitamin D3 allows the body to absorb and regulate calcium. Frances M. Baines’s 2024 veterinary review explains that mild deficiency can impair vitamin D3 functions, while severe deficiency can prevent adequate calcium absorption. The body then draws calcium from bone, causing nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, commonly called metabolic bone disease (MBD). (LafeberVet, 2024)

MBD may appear as weak, soft, or bowed bones; swollen limbs; poor growth and deformity in juveniles; lethargy; tremors; seizures; and, when calcium depletion is critical, death. A chameleon can still look active for a time while its calcium physiology is deteriorating, so visible behavior is not a reliable UVB test. UVB is one part of a complete husbandry system that also includes appropriate dietary calcium, nutrition, temperature, hydration, and veterinary care.

Chameleons do not all experience the same sunlight in nature. Some reptiles bask in unobstructed sun; many chameleons mosaic-bask, exposing small parts of the body through leaves and branches. Ferguson Zones organize reptiles into four estimated exposure ranges using natural microhabitat and basking behavior. The framework, developed from field work by Ferguson and colleagues and later zoo-lighting guidance, is a starting point rather than a universal prescription. The readable 2024 review summarizes the framework here: Baines, LafeberVet.

Identify the species, age, enclosure dimensions, top-perch height, and how much foliage or screen separates the animal from the lamp. A veiled chameleon guide gives specific basking values, but those numbers should not automatically be applied to panther, Jackson’s, pygmy, or other species. Ask an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian for species-specific adjustments when the animal is ill, very young, gravid, or kept in an unusual enclosure.
UVI targets cited for veiled chameleons
UVI is a measurement of biologically effective UV at a particular point. It is more useful than a tube’s printed percentage because it describes what reaches the chameleon after distance, reflector, mesh, and guards have altered the beam.

Choose the lamp format and fixture around the enclosure
Linear T5 high-output systems
The veiled-chameleon clinic guide recommends a linear T5 high-output (T5 HO) tube and gives Arcadia ProT5 Kit with 6% UVB and Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 T5 HO as examples. A linear tube can spread UVB across a useful branch area rather than creating only a small point beam. The fixture’s reflector, tube length, mounting height, and any guard still determine the delivered UVI.
Other formats and percentage labels
Compact fluorescent, mercury-vapor, and other lamp formats can produce different beam shapes and heat loads. The supplied veterinary evidence does not establish one universally superior bulb brand or format for every chameleon. Compare systems by measured UVI at the highest reachable perch, the width of the usable gradient, and whether the animal can retreat into lower-UVI shade. A stronger printed percentage is not automatically safer or better if the lamp is close, narrowly focused, or placed over a small enclosure.
VCA’s general chameleon page suggests 5.0 UVB for most chameleons and 10.0 in larger or more obstructed enclosures (VCA Animal Hospitals). Those labels are not directly equivalent to the measured UVI targets above. Use them only as broad product-selection context, then verify the actual enclosure conditions.

Set up a usable UVB gradient
The chameleon should be able to select exposure rather than being held at one intensity all day. The veterinary review recommends a basking zone at least as large as the animal and no more than half of the enclosure, with a cool retreat. The clinic guide similarly recommends branches at several heights and distances.

- Place the linear fixture over one side or section of the enclosure. This leaves a separate area where foliage and distance create lower UVB.
- Install a stable basking branch beneath the lamp. Measure the branch where the chameleon’s back will actually be, not the floor or an empty midpoint.
- Add lower perches and dense foliage. The animal should be able to move away, pass under leaves, and choose shade without leaving the enclosure.
- Check the highest accessible point. Chameleons climb, so a perch or vine that reaches closer to the tube may receive considerably more UVB than the intended basking branch.
- Keep heat and UVB zones coordinated but not trapped together. A chameleon should be able to leave the heat source while still finding lower UVB.
Distance, mesh, reflectors, and guards change the dose
“The strength of UVB rays decreases the further the animal is from the bulb,” writes Baines in the 2024 LafeberVet review. The falloff is affected by lamp output, beam shape, reflector design, screen, protective guards, and the angle and distance to the perch. A distance chart is therefore a starting estimate, not a delivered-UVI guarantee.

|---|---|
| ¼-inch wire mesh | 25% |
| Exo Terra and ZooMed screens; Arcadia LampGuardPro tube guards | 35% |
| Dubia Reptile Enclosures and Zen Habitats screens | 45% |
These are examples, not a universal percentage for all mesh. Wire diameter, aperture, material, dust, lamp angle, and whether the fixture sits above or inside the screen can change the result. Never compensate for an obstructed lamp by guessing that a stronger tube is safe; measure at reptile level or obtain species-specific veterinary advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Measure UVI at the chameleon’s level
A UV Index meter shows the condition inside your enclosure rather than the nominal output on packaging. Baines recommends a Solarmeter 6.5 or 6.5R and says the best practice is to take readings at reptile level at least monthly for meter owners. Position the instrument according to its manufacturer’s instructions, with the sensor at the basking branch and at the highest reachable perch.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Map the enclosure. Record the basking branch, highest climbable point, mid-level foliage, and shaded retreat.
- Measure each location. Note the UVI with the animal’s usual screen, guard, reflector, and foliage in place.
- Compare readings with the species-specific target. For a veiled chameleon, the clinic’s 2.5–3.0 basking target and Chameleon Academy’s UVI 3 target are the cited reference points.
- Adjust one variable at a time. Change fixture height, branch position, reflector, or mesh arrangement, then measure again.
- Keep a maintenance log. Record date, bulb type, mounting distance, mesh condition, and UVI readings so declining output is visible.
If you do not own a meter, follow the lamp maker’s distance and replacement guidance conservatively, keep a broad shade area, and ask an exotic-animal veterinarian to review the installation. Visible brightness does not tell you how much UVB remains.

Replace bulbs before visible light fools you
UVB output can decline while a tube still appears normally bright. The veterinary review advises regular replacement even when visible light has not changed; the exact interval depends on the lamp, fixture, operating schedule, and manufacturer guidance. Monthly measurements are preferable because they reveal the actual trend in your enclosure. Clean dust from the fixture and screen as part of routine maintenance, but do not alter the setup without rechecking UVI.
UVB, heat, and daylight are separate systems
UVB does not provide a complete daylight environment or a reliable basking temperature. Baines describes a natural “patch of sunlight” as a combination of UVB, heat, and bright visible illumination. Provide each component deliberately and verify temperatures with an appropriate thermometer. A heat bulb that creates the correct basking temperature may still deliver no UVB; a UVB tube may produce little useful heat.
For veiled chameleons, the Long Island clinic guide recommends a 12-hour light/dark cycle and synchronizing daylight, UVB, and heat. That is a cited veiled-chameleon example, not a universal rule for every species or seasonal setup. A timer can keep the schedule consistent, but it cannot correct an incorrect UVI or temperature.
Common setup failures and fixes
The animal receives almost no UVB
- Likely causes: excessive distance, a dense or highly attenuating screen, a worn tube, a failed fixture, or a perch positioned outside the beam.
- Fix: inspect the tube and reflector, measure at the perch, clean obstructions, and reposition the fixture or branch gradually while maintaining a shaded retreat.
The highest perch is much stronger than intended
- Likely causes: an unexpected vine or plant brings the chameleon closer to the tube than the measured basking branch.
- Fix: measure every climbable high point, lower or relocate it, and recheck the basking and shade readings.
The enclosure has one intense spot and no gradient
- Likely causes: a narrow beam, undersized fixture, or sparse layout.
- Fix: use a linear fixture suited to the enclosure, add branches at multiple heights, and create foliage-covered lower-UVI routes.
The keeper is choosing by “5.0” or “10.0” alone
- Why it fails: printed percentages do not account for reflector, distance, mesh, guard, bulb age, or beam shape.
- Fix: treat the label as a starting selection and judge the finished installation by measured UVI and the animal’s ability to retreat.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the chameleon species, age, health status, and enclosure size.
- Identify the likely Ferguson exposure zone, while recognizing that it is a framework rather than a species-specific prescription.
- Select a suitable linear T5 HO or another documented system only after considering fixture, reflector, and mounting position.
- Place the basking branch at a measured distance and keep the basking area no larger than half the enclosure.
- Account for screen, guards, foliage, and every high perch.
- Measure UVI at reptile level with a UV Index meter when possible, at least monthly.
- Provide lower-UVI shade, a temperature gradient, bright visible light, and a consistent species-appropriate photoperiod.
- Replace the tube according to measured decline and manufacturer guidance, not visible brightness alone.
When a veterinarian should review the setup
Arrange an exotic-animal veterinary examination for a chameleon with tremors, weakness, swollen limbs, deformity, difficulty climbing, lethargy, seizures, or suspected MBD. Bring photographs of the enclosure, bulb and fixture details, mounting distances, mesh type, temperature records, supplement schedule, and UVI readings if available. Clinical signs cannot be corrected safely by simply moving a lamp closer; calcium disorders and other illnesses require diagnosis and treatment.
