Individual dogs can vary widely, so consider the parents and the dog’s own needs when deciding whether this mix suits your home.
A Cheagle may be affectionate, bright, funny, energetic, and food-motivated. It may also bark, follow scents instead of responding to recall, and need more exercise and enrichment than its small size suggests.

What is a Cheagle?
A Cheagle is the informal name for a Chihuahua–Beagle crossbreed. It may also be described as a Chihuahua Beagle mix, designer crossbreed, or mixed-breed dog.
Cheagle is not an American Kennel Club-recognized breed. The AKC’s list contains 205 recognized breeds, including the Chihuahua and Beagle but not the Cheagle. There is no official Cheagle standard defining its adult height, weight, body shape, coat, exercise needs, temperament, or lifespan.
#1 Best Overall
- Highly Palatable with natural pork liver base
- 500 treats per bag!
- Only 1.5 calories per treat
- Clean ingredients with no corn, soy or artificial flavors
- Made with natural bacon
That distinction matters when choosing a puppy. A Cheagle can inherit more of the Chihuahua parent, more of the Beagle parent, or a mixture of both. Even puppies from the same litter may differ in size, appearance, energy, barking, sociability, and trainability.
How big will a Cheagle get?
There is no scientifically established or official Cheagle weight range. Generic claims that every Cheagle will weigh 10–20 pounds should be treated as guesses, not facts.
The parent-breed standards provide context but do not create a standard for the cross. The Chihuahua standard describes a toy dog weighing no more than 6 pounds as an adult. Beagles have two recognized height varieties: under 13 inches and 13–15 inches. A cross between them may fall in a broad range, depending on the parents and the puppy’s inheritance.

For a more useful estimate, ask to see both parents and review their actual adult weights. Even then, allow for variation. A puppy’s current weight cannot precisely predict its adult size, particularly when the parents are built differently.
Appearance and coat
Cheagles do not have one required appearance. Possible features include:
- a small, compact body or a sturdier Beagle-like build;
- a narrow Chihuahua-like face or a broader hound-like head;
- upright, folded, or partly folded ears;
- a long, short, or moderately tapered muzzle;
- a curved, upright, or hound-like tail;
- short, dense fur or a somewhat longer coat;
- many combinations of black, white, tan, red, brown, cream, and tricolor markings.
Chihuahuas may have smooth or long coats. Beagles have a short, dense double coat and shed moderately. A Cheagle may therefore shed lightly or noticeably, and coat maintenance varies by individual. Neither parent breed is reliably hypoallergenic, so a Cheagle should not be marketed as a hypoallergenic dog.
Cheagle temperament
A Cheagle’s temperament is not guaranteed by its name. The best way to understand the likely management challenges is to consider what each parent breed may contribute.

Chihuahuas are alert, intelligent, confident, and often vocal. Some are wary of unfamiliar people or dogs without careful socialization. Their small size also makes them vulnerable to injury from rough play, accidental falls, or being handled like a toy.
Beagles were developed as scent hounds. They are generally social and active, but their nose can be more compelling than a person’s recall cue. Beagles may follow a trail, ignore a familiar command, or become destructive when bored or left alone for long periods.

A Cheagle may therefore be:
- strongly attached to its family;
- quick to alert-bark at sounds, visitors, or movement outside;
- interested in food and willing to investigate every accessible surface;
- playful and energetic despite its small body;
- easily distracted by scent;
- sensitive to rough handling or harsh corrections;
- prone to separation-related distress if alone time is introduced too quickly.
These are possibilities, not a temperament checklist. A well-socialized Cheagle can be friendly and adaptable, while an under-socialized dog may be fearful, reactive, or noisy.
Exercise and enrichment needs
Do not assume that a small Cheagle is a low-exercise lapdog. The Beagle side may contribute substantial stamina and scent-drive, while Chihuahuas can be active, clever, and persistent.
The right routine depends on the individual dog’s age, health, and structure, but most Cheagles benefit from a combination of:
- daily walks at a manageable pace;
- short training sessions;
- supervised play;
- sniffing opportunities;
- food puzzles and scatter-feeding games;
- safe exploration on a harness and long line.
Exercise should not consist only of trying to tire the dog physically. Five minutes of scent work, finding hidden treats, or learning a new behavior can be valuable mental activity.
Use a secure fenced area or a properly managed long line outdoors. A Cheagle that catches an interesting scent may not return when called. A small dog can still squeeze through gaps, dig under fencing, or run through an open door.
Training a Cheagle
Begin with reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. Food rewards, toys, praise, and repetition are more useful than intimidation. Harsh corrections can worsen fear, barking, and defensive behavior.

- Build recall in controlled locations. Start indoors, then use a fenced area or long line before testing recall outside.
- Practice handling. Gently touch paws, ears, mouth, and collar while rewarding calm behavior.
- Socialize gradually. Introduce people, stable dogs, household noises, surfaces, transport, and veterinary handling without forcing the puppy to interact.
- Train calm alone time. Begin with brief absences and increase them gradually. A companion dog is not automatically comfortable being left alone all day.
- Manage food access. Keep rubbish, counters, pet food, and unsafe objects out of reach, and include some of the dog’s daily food in training or puzzle toys.
Keep sessions short and consistent. The scent-hound influence can make outdoor obedience particularly difficult, so management is part of training rather than evidence that the dog is stubborn or “bad.”
Grooming and shedding
Grooming needs depend on the coat inherited by the puppy. A short-coated Cheagle will generally need regular brushing to remove loose hair. A longer-coated dog may need more frequent brushing around the ears, legs, chest, and tail to prevent mats.
Check the ears regularly, especially if they fold over and restrict airflow. Keep nails trimmed and introduce brushing, bathing, and dental care early. Shedding may be more noticeable during seasonal changes.

Cheagle health concerns
There is no large, breed-wide Cheagle health database equivalent to the information available for established breeds. It is more accurate to discuss possible risks from the Chihuahua and Beagle lines than to claim that every Cheagle is affected by a particular disease.

Dental disease
Small dogs can develop crowded teeth and periodontal disease. Warning signs include persistent bad breath, red or bleeding gums, retained baby teeth, difficulty chewing, loose teeth, or dropping food. Daily brushing—or at least brushing every other day—is the most effective home-care measure, but veterinary dental assessment may still be needed.
Patellar luxation
Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal track. Small dogs, including Chihuahuas, can be affected. A skipping gait, intermittent hind-leg lameness, or briefly carrying one back leg should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Severity ranges from mild instability to a more serious displacement, and treatment depends on the grade and the dog’s clinical signs.
Heart and eye disease
Chihuahua health information identifies cardiac disease and eye disease among conditions that can affect the breed, along with patellar luxation and idiopathic epilepsy. The Chihuahua Club of America recommends patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations for breeding dogs.
Conditions associated with Beagles
The National Beagle Club of America identifies epilepsy, allergies, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and back problems among concerns requiring attention in Beagles. Its recommended screening program includes hip, eye, cardiac, thyroid, and Musladin-Lueke syndrome testing. Optional testing may include patellar luxation, Lafora epilepsy, Factor VII deficiency, and neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration.
Weight control
Do not rely on a fixed “ideal Cheagle weight.” Feed according to body condition, age, activity, and veterinary advice. Food motivation and a small frame can make excess treats add up quickly. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin covering of fat, without seeing prominent bones or a heavy layer over the chest and abdomen.

Because there is no Cheagle-specific health standard, evaluate the parents rather than accepting a claim that the cross is automatically healthier. Ask for the parents’ registered names, test dates, testing organizations, and written results.
| Parent | Useful documentation to request |
|---|---|
| Chihuahua | Patella evaluation, cardiac examination, and ophthalmologist examination |
| Beagle | Hip evaluation, eye examination, cardiac evaluation, Musladin-Lueke syndrome DNA test, and thyroid evaluation where applicable |
An Orthopedic Foundation for Animals CHIC number shows that recommended screenings were completed and made publicly available. It does not mean that every result was normal. Look up the records rather than treating the CHIC number itself as a guarantee.
Also ask to meet the mother, see where the puppies are raised, review vaccination and worming records, and observe how the breeder responds to questions. A seller who only says “health tested” but provides no verifiable records has not supplied enough information.

Is a shelter dog labelled “Cheagle” definitely a Chihuahua–Beagle mix?
No. Rescue and shelter labels may be based on appearance, surrender information, or a DNA estimate. Appearance alone cannot reliably establish breed composition, and the label does not prove that the dog is exactly 50% Chihuahua and 50% Beagle.
That does not make the dog unsuitable. It simply means you should assess the individual dog’s behavior, medical history, energy level, and compatibility with your household instead of relying on the name.
Can Cheagles be registered with the AKC?
A Chihuahua–Beagle cross cannot receive full AKC purebred registration as either breed. Mixed-breed dogs may instead enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program. The program is open to mixed-breed dogs, but enrolled dogs must be spayed or neutered upon adulthood and cannot be wolf hybrids.
Enrolled dogs may participate in many activities, including agility, obedience, rally, tracking, and scent work. They cannot compete in conformation because mixed-breed dogs do not have a breed standard, and some breed-specific events are also unavailable. In AKC events, they are generally entered as “All American Dogs,” not as a recognized Cheagle breed.

A Cheagle can be a lively, loving companion, but it is not a predictable small breed. Expect variation in adult size, coat, barking, energy, and behavior. The most important practical considerations are secure outdoor management, positive training, gradual alone-time practice, dental care, weight control, and verifiable health records for both parents when buying a puppy.
FAQ
Is a Cheagle a real breed?
Cheagle is a commonly used name for a Chihuahua–Beagle cross, but it is not a standardized breed. It has no universally accepted breed standard or official Cheagle size and temperament requirements.
Are Cheagles good family dogs?
Some are affectionate and sociable family companions, but suitability depends on the individual dog and the household. Young children must be taught gentle handling because a small Cheagle can be injured easily, and adults must be prepared for barking, scent-driven wandering, and daily enrichment.
Are Cheagles easy to train?
They can learn quickly with positive reinforcement, but the Beagle influence may make recall unreliable around scents and the Chihuahua influence may contribute alertness or sensitivity. Short, rewarding sessions and careful outdoor management are important.
Do Cheagles shed?
Usually, yes, although the amount varies. A Cheagle may inherit the Beagle’s short, dense shedding coat or a Chihuahua-type coat that may be smooth or long. No Cheagle should be assumed to be hypoallergenic.
How long do Cheagles live?
There is no authoritative Cheagle lifespan figure. Longevity varies with inherited health, body condition, preventive care, breeding quality, and the individual dog. Regular veterinary examinations, dental care, weight control, and safe exercise all matter.
Are Cheagles healthier than purebred dogs?
Crossbreeding does not guarantee better health or remove inherited disease risk. Responsible breeding requires documented health screening of both the Chihuahua and Beagle parents.
