Open the refrigerator, unwrap a snack, or touch the cheese drawer, and a dog may appear as if summoned by law. “Cheese Tax” turns that familiar household scene into a 68-second comedy song: according to the dog, every piece of cheese opened in the kitchen creates an immediate payment obligation.
The viral recording is by Puppy Songs, the Atlanta-based project created by songwriter and musician Matt Hobbs. It became a widely reused TikTok sound in early 2023 because it gave dog owners a ready-made soundtrack for one of their pets’ most recognizable habits: arriving instantly when food is involved.

The joke: a dog has imposed a dairy tariff
The song treats begging for cheese as a formal civic procedure. The dog is not merely hoping for a bite; it is enforcing a household statute. Rules must be followed, facts must be acknowledged, payment must be collected, and the cheese must be surrendered.
That mock-legal framing is the key to the song’s appeal. A dog staring at a cutting board is ordinary. A dog appearing as an officially appointed tax collector with a non-negotiable claim on the groceries is a comic character.
The recording does not need a complicated dance, costume, or editing trick. A creator can pair it with a dog running toward an open refrigerator, sitting expectantly beside a cutting board, staring at a sandwich, or receiving a very small treat. The audio supplies the narrative: the dog has discovered that cheese is being used, and the collection process has begun.
The lyrics are written from the dog’s perspective, which is important. The humor comes from presenting the dog’s entitlement as completely reasonable. To the human, this is begging. To the dog, it is the enforcement of an established household rule.
Who created “Cheese Tax”?
The recorded song is by Matt Hobbs’ Puppy Songs project. Puppy Songs began in 2020 as a pandemic-era creative project in which Hobbs writes original songs from the perspectives of his dogs, Leni and Mar Pup.
Hobbs reportedly came up with the idea after noticing his dogs—particularly Mar Pup—appearing whenever he and his wife opened the cheese drawer while cooking. That observation became a miniature musical world in which ordinary canine behavior is treated as a serious event.
It is worth separating two things that are often blended together online:

- Includes one squeaker within the stuffing
- Made with polyester fibers

- The general “cheese tax” joke: a broader dog-owner expression about a pet expecting a share of human food. Versions of that idea appeared online before the Puppy Songs recording.
- The Puppy Songs song: the specific short recording released in 2023 and later reused as a TikTok sound. Its authoritative attribution is Matt Hobbs/Puppy Songs.
Some posts and article pages have credited unrelated TikTok creators with the song or treated a separate dog video as its origin. Those explanations do not match the Puppy Songs credits, release information, and contemporaneous reporting about the track.
Why the sound spread so quickly on TikTok
Puppy Songs announced that the track passed 10 million TikTok views during its first week, before its release on Spotify. That figure is a historical launch-period milestone, not a current audience measurement.
The sound had several qualities that made it easy to reuse:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- It was short. At roughly a minute, it fit naturally into a quick pet video.
- It was self-contained. Viewers did not need background knowledge to understand the joke.
- It had a built-in action. The dog could be shown hearing a wrapper, spotting cheese, sprinting toward the kitchen, or waiting for payment.
- It matched real household behavior. Many dogs respond to the refrigerator door, a food wrapper, a cutting board, or a familiar kitchen sound.
- It worked across breeds and animals. The trend expanded beyond one original dog because the premise could be applied to almost any food-motivated pet.
Unlike a dance trend, “Cheese Tax” required no specific choreography. The creator only needed a pet and a recognizable moment of food-related expectation. That low barrier helped turn a personal observation about Hobbs’ dogs into a reusable format for thousands of other owners.
What the song understands about living with dogs
The song works because it exaggerates a truth rather than inventing an unfamiliar behavior. Dogs learn household patterns quickly. If opening a particular drawer sometimes leads to a treat, the sound of that drawer can become an announcement. If standing near the counter occasionally produces a bite, the counter becomes worth monitoring.
“Cheese Tax” gives that pattern a personality. The dog is not portrayed as confused or accidentally present. It has a job. It knows the law. It knows the rate. Most importantly, it believes the human has no right to dispute the invoice.
That perspective is consistent with Puppy Songs’ wider catalog, which turns everyday canine habits into songs narrated by the dogs themselves. The project’s appeal is less about cheese specifically than about recognizing a pet’s distinctive logic: the dog has noticed something, assigned it meaning, and made itself part of the routine.

Official “Cheese Tax” merchandise
The Puppy Songs shop lists an official Cheese Tax dog toy bearing the phrase “The Rules Are The Rules.” It is a particularly direct companion to the song because it turns the joke into a physical dog item rather than merely using a generic cheese design.
The shop and project also feature other dog and fan merchandise, including bandanas, toys, T-shirts, and stickers. If you are looking for something connected specifically to the viral song, confirm that the listing is from the official Puppy Songs shop or an authorized seller. A generic cheese-themed dog toy should not be described as official Puppy Songs merchandise, and the official toy should not be assumed to be available through Amazon without a current, verified listing.
Does the dog really get cheese?
The song is entertainment, not feeding guidance. Some dogs can have a tiny amount of plain cheese occasionally, but cheese is high in fat, and some dogs do not digest it well. Too much high-fat food can contribute to weight gain and may increase the risk of pancreatitis. Extra caution is appropriate for dogs with obesity, food sensitivities, lactose intolerance, or a history of digestive problems.
The type of cheese and its ingredients also matter. Cheese containing garlic, onion, chives, or other potentially dangerous ingredients should not be treated as an ordinary dog snack. The FDA notes that risks from potentially harmful foods vary with the animal, the amount eaten, and the specific food.
If you choose to “pay the tax,” keep the portion tiny, plain, and occasional, and account for it within the dog’s overall daily calories. A dog-specific treat can be a more practical alternative when you want to reward the behavior without routinely sharing table food. Check the product’s ingredients and feeding guidance rather than assuming that a cheese flavor makes every treat suitable for every dog.

The real-world afterlife of the meme
The idea became recognizable enough for Kraft Singles to introduce a limited “Cheese Tax Pack” concept in March 2023. Contemporary coverage described it as a package with 15 slices for people and one additional slice intended for the dog.

That promotion was historical and limited. It should not be treated as a currently available product without a new, verified campaign or retailer listing. Its significance is cultural: a small dog-owner joke had become recognizable enough to inspire a branded food promotion within weeks of the song’s viral spread.
Why “Cheese Tax” remains so memorable
Many pet memes depend on a single cute image. “Cheese Tax” goes further by supplying a repeatable rule. Every time a dog appears after cheese is opened, the owner can stage the same tiny courtroom drama: the human has triggered the law, the dog has arrived to collect, and refusal is apparently not an option.
That is why the song feels like such an accurate summary of dog ownership. A refrigerator door is never merely a refrigerator door. A food wrapper is a summons. A cutting board is a workplace. And any routine that happens often enough may eventually become the dog’s business.

Who sings the original “Cheese Tax” song?
The original recording is by Puppy Songs, the project created by Atlanta-based songwriter and musician Matt Hobbs. Hobbs wrote, performed, and arranged the song.
When was “Cheese Tax” released?
It was released as a single in March 2023. It later appeared on the 2024 Puppy Songs album.
Is “Cheese Tax” originally a TikTok song?
The specific viral recording is a Puppy Songs song that spread through TikTok in early 2023. The broader phrase “cheese tax,” meaning a dog expects a share of human food, was used online before the recording.
Can dogs eat cheese?
Some dogs can tolerate a tiny amount of plain cheese occasionally, but it is high in fat and may cause problems for dogs with sensitivities, lactose intolerance, obesity, or digestive conditions. Avoid cheese containing ingredients such as garlic, onion, or chives, and ask your veterinarian about your individual dog’s diet.
The Bottom Line
“Cheese Tax” is more than a catchy pet sound: it is Matt Hobbs’ Puppy Songs recording of a familiar dog-owner ritual. Its mock-legal language gives a universal kitchen moment a memorable rule—if cheese appears, the dog is owed a payment. Just remember that the joke’s “tax” should never override sensible feeding: for many dogs, a tiny occasional portion or a dog-specific treat is safer than sharing freely from the table.
