The best spaniel-type breed for outdoor life depends on what “outdoorsy” means to you. A Brittany or English Springer Spaniel may suit hunting, running, and demanding field work; an American Water Spaniel or Irish Water Spaniel is a more natural choice for water retrieves; and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Papillon may be happier joining moderate walks and family outings than working all day in the field.

The American Kennel Club recognizes 15 spaniel-type breeds as of 2025. The group includes Sporting breeds, Toy breeds, and three less-obvious inclusions whose names do not all contain “spaniel”: the Brittany, Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, and Papillon. They share some historical connections to sporting or companion dogs, but they are not interchangeable in stamina, size, prey drive, swimming ability, coat care, or exercise needs. AKC’s overview of spaniel breeds is the basis for the list below.

What makes a dog a spaniel-type breed?

Spaniels are traditionally associated with finding, flushing, and retrieving game. In practical terms, many were developed to work closely with hunters in woods, fields, marshes, or water. That heritage explains why several spaniels enjoy scent games, retrieving practice, swimming, hiking, and other activities that combine movement with mental work.

“Spaniel-type” is broader than “a breed whose name includes the word spaniel.” The AKC list includes the Brittany, whose current AKC breed name is simply Brittany; the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, a smaller Sporting breed; and the Papillon, a Toy breed. These are AKC-recognized members of this particular spaniel grouping, not evidence that every spaniel breed worldwide appears on the list.

They also differ substantially. Sporting breeds commonly need regular, invigorating exercise, but a Toy Group companion should not be expected to match a working gundog’s endurance. Even within one breed, age, health, conditioning, breeding line, training, weather, and the individual dog matter.

For working-oriented spaniels, a dog training dummy can support short, structured retrieve sessions. It is a training aid—not a substitute for teaching a safe return, supervising the dog, or gradually building fitness.

The 15 spaniel-type breeds, grouped by outdoor lifestyle

Water specialists

1. American Water Spaniel

The American Water Spaniel is an upbeat, outdoors-focused athlete associated with the lake country of the upper Midwest. Hunting and swimming are natural parts of its historical profile, making it an appealing candidate for owners who spend time around lakes, rivers, or wetlands and want a dog that can participate in water retrieves.

It may also be somewhat reserved with strangers and can occasionally be stubborn. That means an owner should value patient, consistent training rather than assuming enthusiasm outdoors will automatically produce reliable obedience. Water access should always be supervised; the breed’s water-oriented heritage does not guarantee that every individual dog will swim confidently.

2. Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel is the tallest of the AKC’s spaniels and is immediately distinctive for its crisply curled coat and tapering “rat” tail. It is described by the AKC as a strong swimmer that is hardworking and brave in the field.

This is a compelling option for an owner seeking a substantial, water-capable working companion, but the coat requires ongoing maintenance and the dog needs purposeful activity. Swimming, retrieving, scent work, and field training can be more satisfying than repetitive exercise alone.

Field and hunting standouts

3. Boykin Spaniel

The medium-sized Boykin Spaniel was developed as a flushing and retrieving dog. Its profile combines an avid, merry, trainable attitude with the ability to settle into life as a housedog. For someone seeking a relatively compact hunting companion that can also fit into an active home, the Boykin is one of the most adaptable choices on this list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its field enthusiasm should not be mistaken for an unlimited exercise guarantee. A Boykin still needs training, rest, conditioning, and a realistic plan for meeting its mental needs when hunting or long outings are not possible.

4. Brittany

The Brittany is included in the AKC’s 15 spaniel-type breeds even though “spaniel” is no longer part of its AKC breed name. It is agile, bright, eager, versatile, and notably energetic, with the tireless working style many people imagine when they picture an outdoor bird dog.

Running, hiking, hunting, field training, and other demanding activities may suit a well-conditioned Brittany. This is less likely to be a good match for a household wanting only occasional short walks. Its exercise needs and responsiveness also make early training and reliable management especially important.

5. English Cocker Spaniel

The English Cocker Spaniel is a compact, silky-coated bird dog that can be upbeat in the field and mellow at home. It may suit hunting, field training, long walks, and active family life, particularly when the owner wants versatility rather than a dog dedicated to one kind of work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every English Cocker has the same stamina or working style. Show and working lines can produce different priorities and energy levels, so prospective owners should ask breeders or rescue organizations about the individual dog’s background, behavior, and needs.

6. English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is among the strongest outdoor and field-work candidates in this group. It is energetic, intelligent, and high in stamina, and working Springers have long served as hunting companions while also being capable of mannerly home life.

The breed’s working heritage is reflected in organized competition: the AKC identifies English Springer Spaniels as one of three breeds with a long history of competing in spaniel field trials. AKC’s spaniel sports information also explains the broader working context. A Springer may be an excellent partner for field work and active training, but its drive can be challenging if the household provides exercise without enough structure or mental engagement.

7. Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel is sensitive but vigorous and, in the AKC’s description, game for anything when playing or working in the field. It offers a useful middle ground for an active household that wants genuine field heritage without choosing one of the more commonly seen sporting breeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its generally docile disposition does not eliminate the need for thoughtful training. Sensitive dogs may respond poorly to harsh handling, so calm, clear instruction and a predictable routine are sensible foundations for outdoor work.

8. Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a vigorous, medium-sized bird dog with field versatility and a happy, companionable character at home. The breed is also described by the AKC as one of Britain’s oldest sporting breeds, giving it a long-standing connection to outdoor work.

It may suit an active family that wants a distinctive field-oriented spaniel for walks, training, exploration, and hunting-related activities. As with other sporting dogs, the owner should plan for both physical exercise and tasks that use the dog’s attention and nose.

Versatile, moderate-activity companions

9. American Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel—usually called the American Cocker Spaniel in contexts where it must be distinguished from the English Cocker—was developed as a hunting dog but became widely popular as an all-around companion. It can be an active outdoor partner, but suitability depends on the individual dog’s conditioning, training, coat care, and willingness to work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The American Cocker and English Cocker are separate breeds, not interchangeable names for the same dog. Buyers should confirm which breed and which line they are considering, particularly if they want a hunting or field-training partner.

10. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel brings more outdoor ability than its Toy Group placement might suggest. The AKC describes it as combining Toy Group attentiveness with the verve and athleticism of a sporting spaniel.

A Cavalier may enjoy walks, moderate hikes, training games, and family outings. It should not, however, be presented as equivalent to a high-stamina working Springer, Brittany, or water spaniel. Match the activity to the individual dog’s fitness and avoid treating a small companion breed as an endurance athlete simply because it is enthusiastic.

11. Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is a large, dignified flushing spaniel and hunting companion. The AKC describes it as the largest of its flushing spaniels and characterizes it as mellow and amiable.

Its outdoor profile is better suited to steady field work and walking than to portraying it as a fast, high-intensity runner. Prospective owners should also be prepared for substantial shedding and drooling—practical considerations when a dog regularly comes home from trails, fields, or wet ground.

12. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje

The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje appears on the AKC’s spaniel-type list even though its name does not include “spaniel.” It belongs to the Sporting Group and is described as lively, agile, self-confident, alert, tough, attentive, and energetic outdoors.

This can be an attractive choice for someone wanting a smaller sporting dog with a willingness to work. Its compact size does not make it a low-effort pet, though; training, mental stimulation, and appropriate exercise remain important.

13. Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex Spaniel is a slow-but-steady hunter and congenial housedog. Its placid, affectionate, even-tempered, and loyal character makes it a better fit for steady exploration, scenting, moderate field activity, and walking than for speed-based outdoor sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its unhurried style is not a deficiency—it is the point of the match. Owners seeking a calm companion for measured outings may appreciate the Sussex more than a dog bred for relentless pace.

Smaller companion-oriented outdoor dogs

14. English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel was bred as a companion of royalty but remains bright, loving, and willing to please. It can enjoy safe walks, supervised outdoor time, and age-appropriate training games.

It is not a field specialist. Do not expect the endurance, retrieving drive, or weather resilience associated with Sporting Group spaniels. Its best outdoor life is usually built around manageable outings and close companionship rather than all-day hunting or strenuous adventure.

15. Papillon

The Papillon is the other especially unexpected inclusion. It is an AKC Toy Group breed described as quick, curious, athletic, hardy, happy, alert, and friendly. For its size, it can be a surprisingly capable walking, training, and adventure companion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small-dog athleticism is not the same as the water work or hunting specialization of a Sporting spaniel. A Papillon may enjoy learning, exploring, and traveling with its person, but activity should account for its small body, weather exposure, footing, and the individual dog’s limits.

Quick comparison: which type of outdoor life fits?

The categories below are practical editorial groupings based on AKC breed descriptions and group classifications, not official rankings. “Strong fit” means the breed’s documented history or temperament aligns with the activity; it does not mean every individual dog will enjoy or excel at it.

Breed Swimming and water Hunting or field work Hiking and active training Moderate family outings Important consideration
American Water Spaniel Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit Possible with adequate activity May be aloof with strangers or occasionally stubborn
Boykin Spaniel Possible Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit with training Needs both field outlets and home manners
Brittany Possible Strong fit Strong fit Best with a very active household Substantial exercise needs
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Individual-dependent Limited compared with working gundogs Moderate, dog-dependent Strong fit Do not equate it with working-spaniel endurance
Clumber Spaniel Possible Strong fit Steady rather than high-speed Strong fit Shedding and drooling
American Cocker Spaniel Individual-dependent Possible to strong, depending on dog Moderate to active Strong fit Separate breed from English Cocker; lines and individuals vary
English Cocker Spaniel Possible Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit Working and show lines may differ
English Springer Spaniel Possible Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit with structure High stamina and mental-work needs
English Toy Spaniel Individual-dependent Not a field specialist Shorter, manageable activity Strong fit Limited endurance and weather resilience compared with Sporting breeds
Field Spaniel Possible Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit Sensitive temperament benefits from thoughtful handling
Irish Water Spaniel Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit Possible with structured activity Curly coat maintenance and substantial activity needs
Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Possible Possible to strong Strong fit Possible with mental work Smaller does not mean low-energy
Papillon Individual-dependent Not a Sporting field specialist Strong for its size Strong fit Account for size, footing, and exposure
Sussex Spaniel Possible Strong fit at a steady pace Moderate and steady Strong fit Better suited to measured activity than speed
Welsh Springer Spaniel Possible Strong fit Strong fit Strong fit with activity Needs physical and mental outlets

How to choose among them

  1. Start with the activity, not the appearance. Decide whether you want a swimming partner, a hunting dog, a trail companion, a scent-work participant, or a dog for moderate family walks. A breed’s coat and expression are less important than whether its daily needs match your routine.
  2. Separate stamina from enthusiasm. A dog can be eager outdoors without being built for long, strenuous outings. Clumbers and Sussex Spaniels, for example, may be better suited to steady activity, while Brittanys and English Springer Spaniels are clearer matches for demanding exercise.
  3. Ask about purpose and line. Especially with Cockers and English Cockers, working and show lines may differ in energy and field drive. Ask what the parents were bred and trained to do, and evaluate the actual dog rather than relying on a label.
  4. Consider water honestly. American and Irish Water Spaniels have especially strong water-oriented profiles, but no breed label guarantees swimming ability or enjoyment. If boating or deep water is part of your plans, prepare for safety rather than assuming instinct is enough.
  5. Budget for coat, ears, and cleanup. Wet coats, feathering, shedding, drooling, and long ears can all affect the real workload of an outdoor dog. Outdoor suitability includes what happens after the hike—not just how the dog behaves on the trail.
  6. Plan mental work. Retrieving, scent games, field exercises, obedience, and controlled problem-solving can be more fulfilling than simply adding miles. Working breeds often need an outlet for their attention as well as their muscles.
  7. Evaluate the individual. Age, health, conditioning, confidence, temperament, and previous experience affect what a dog can safely do. Speak with responsible breeders, breed clubs, or reputable rescue organizations before choosing.

Outdoor safety for any spaniel

  • Heat: Provide shade and fresh water, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Dogs do not regulate body temperature as effectively as humans. Build fitness gradually rather than taking an unconditioned dog on a demanding outing.
  • Water: Supervise every swim. Some dogs cannot swim or do not like water, including individuals within breeds associated with swimming. Introduce water gradually, offer fresh drinking water, and consider a properly fitted dog life jacket for boating, deep water, unfamiliar conditions, or a dog whose ability is uncertain. A life jacket does not make unsupervised swimming safe.
  • Ticks: Ask your veterinarian about appropriate tick prevention for your dog and location. After hikes, hunting, camping, or time in tall grass and woodland, check the dog carefully. A tick remover tool for dogs can be kept with outdoor supplies, but it is not a replacement for veterinary advice or preventive care.
  • Paws and coat: Inspect paws after rough, hot, icy, or thorny terrain. Check the coat and ears for burrs, debris, moisture, and parasites after outings, particularly in feathered or curly-coated breeds.
  • Control: Do not assume a spaniel is safe off-leash because it is friendly or trainable. Prey drive, scent, wildlife, roads, water, and unfamiliar dogs can change behavior quickly. Use secure equipment and reliable recall training appropriate to the setting.

For trail walks and active family outings, owners may also find a reflective dog collar or dog hiking leash useful for visibility and controlled movement. Fit matters, and neither accessory replaces recall training or safe supervision.

Do spaniels make good hiking or camping dogs?

Several can, especially when the activity matches the dog’s size, stamina, temperament, and conditioning. Brittanys, English Springer Spaniels, English Cockers, Welsh Springer Spaniels, Field Spaniels, Boykins, and the two Water Spaniels are natural candidates for more active outdoor households. A Cavalier, English Toy Spaniel, or Papillon may also enjoy outings, but usually with more attention to distance, weather, terrain, and rest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally best outdoor spaniel. The right choice is the dog whose daily exercise, training, grooming, and safety requirements you can meet consistently—not merely the breed that looks most athletic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many spaniel breeds does the AKC recognize?

The AKC’s 2025 spaniel overview identifies 15 spaniel-type breeds. This article uses that AKC grouping and does not claim that it represents every spaniel breed recognized worldwide.

Which spaniel-type breeds are most associated with water?

The American Water Spaniel and Irish Water Spaniel are the clearest water-oriented choices in this list. Individual dogs still differ in confidence and swimming ability, so every water outing requires supervision.

Are all spaniels high-energy hunting dogs?

No. Brittanys, English Springer Spaniels, Boykins, and several other Sporting breeds have strong field profiles, while breeds such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, English Toy Spaniel, and Papillon are more companion-oriented. Clumber and Sussex Spaniels generally suit steadier activity better than high-speed endurance work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between an American Cocker Spaniel and an English Cocker Spaniel?

They are separate breeds, not interchangeable names. Both have hunting heritage, but individual energy, conformation, training needs, and working drive can vary, particularly between show and working lines.

The Bottom Line

Among the 15 spaniel-type breeds recognized by the AKC, the strongest outdoor match depends on the job: choose a Water Spaniel for a water-centered lifestyle, a Brittany or working Springer for demanding field activity, a Boykin or Cocker for versatility, and a Cavalier, English Toy Spaniel, or Papillon for more moderate companion outings. Match the individual dog—not just the breed name—to your climate, terrain, schedule, and ability to provide training and care.
