Chihuahua Mixes: What to Know Before Choosing Among 11 Crosses

Chihuahua mixes can be loving companions, but a cross name cannot guarantee adult size, behavior or health. Learn how to assess the individual dog, with evidence-based guidance for Chugs, Pom-Chis and other unverified crosses.

There is no reliable, universal list of 11 Chihuahua mixes with predictable personalities or adult appearances. A “Chihuahua mix” is an informal description, not a breed standard. The best-known examples documented here are the Chihuahua–Pug Chug (also called Pughuahua or Pugwawa) and the Chihuahua–Pomeranian Pom-Chi. Both can be affectionate companions, but neither name guarantees a particular size, coat, temperament or health profile.

Individual behavior depends on inherited traits, early socialization, training and veterinary care. Use a cross’s name as a starting point, then assess the actual dog in front of you and the health information available from its parents.

Why a Chihuahua mix is not a predictable package

When two breeds are crossed, puppies can inherit different combinations of physical and behavioral traits from either parent. Unlike an established breed with a written standard, most Chihuahua mixes have no registry definition that fixes adult height, weight, coat, head shape or temperament. Even littermates can mature differently.

Zoetis describes a broad Chihuahua-mix profile as small, companionable, loyal, curious, playful and sometimes watchful. Those labels are useful as a general baseline, not a promise. The same source emphasizes that training, socialization and healthcare influence an individual dog’s behavior. A puppy advertised as “loyal” may become deeply attached to one person, friendly with everyone, cautious around strangers or reactive when poorly socialized.

For that reason, a list of 11 names should never be treated as a ranking from “best” to “worst.” The cross that suits your household depends on the specific dog’s behavior, age, health, energy level and previous experience.

Which Chihuahua crosses can be identified confidently?

Chug: Chihuahua–Pug

A Chug combines a Chihuahua and a Pug and is also called a Pughuahua or Pugwawa. PetMD notes that the Chug is not recognized as an official American Kennel Club breed. Because there is no official standard, appearance and temperament can vary substantially: one dog may show more of the Pug’s easygoing sociability, while another may be more alert or reserved like a Chihuahua.

Do not infer a guaranteed adult size, muzzle shape, coat type or exercise tolerance from the name. Meet the individual dog, ask how it behaves around people and other animals, and review veterinary records for both parents when they are available.

Pom-Chi: Chihuahua–Pomeranian

The Pom-Chi is a Chihuahua–Pomeranian cross. A veterinarian-authored overview describes it as having no registry or written standard and warns that puppies in the same litter may differ. Working estimates sometimes appear in owner guides, but they are not official specifications and should not be used as promises about a particular dog.

Both parent breeds are small companion dogs, yet a Pom-Chi can still vary in body structure, coat, vocal behavior and confidence. Evaluate grooming needs and handling tolerance on the dog itself rather than relying on the cross’s nickname.

Why the other nine names should not be invented

The available, source-backed material does not establish which additional nine crosses belong to the title’s intended set of 11. Chihuahua crosses are often given informal portmanteau names, and different websites use different names for similar pairings. Publishing an unverified list would make it appear that those names, traits and health expectations were established facts.

If you are checking another article or adoption listing, verify each proposed cross with a dependable source and identify whether the dog’s parentage is known, reported by a shelter, or only guessed from appearance. A visual guess is not proof of breed ancestry.

How to judge temperament instead of trusting the label

Observe the dog in several situations

Watch how the dog responds to a calm stranger, a familiar caregiver, gentle handling, ordinary household sounds and another suitable dog. Look for recovery after a surprise: a dog may startle, then relax and re-engage, or remain tense and avoidant. Ask the foster carer or breeder for examples from daily life rather than a single adjective such as “sweet.”

Ask about socialization and training

Early positive exposure to people, surfaces, sounds and veterinary handling can make a major difference, but it does not erase inherited tendencies. Ask what the dog has practiced, which rewards work, and whether it has shown guarding, nipping, separation distress or excessive barking. Positive-reinforcement training is the safest starting point; punishment can increase fear and defensive behavior.

Match energy and attention needs

Small size does not mean a dog needs no activity. Plan daily walks or active play, short training sessions and mental enrichment, then adjust the routine to the dog’s age, health and heat tolerance. A companion that seeks constant proximity may struggle if left alone for long periods, while a more independent dog may prefer predictable rest time.

Health questions every Chihuahua-mix owner should understand

Health risks come from both parent lines and from the individual dog. A condition documented in Chihuahuas is not proof that every Chihuahua mix will develop it. Ask a veterinarian to interpret the dog’s examination, history and any available parent screening.

Concern What the evidence supports Practical response
Heart problems AKC Chihuahua guidance lists possible cardiac problems and recommends cardiac evaluation for breeding dogs. Ask whether parent cardiac screening was performed and have your dog examined regularly. Seek veterinary care for fainting, unusual fatigue or breathing changes.
Eye problems AKC guidance also lists eye disease and recommends eye evaluation in Chihuahua breeding stock. Request documented eye examinations when available and report squinting, discharge, cloudiness or vision changes.
Patellar luxation The Chihuahua parent breed can be affected by slipping kneecaps; AKC lists patella evaluation among recommended screenings. Have intermittent skipping, lameness or reluctance to jump assessed rather than assuming it is a minor quirk.
Dental disease PetMD recommends daily tooth brushing for Chihuahuas. A Royal Veterinary College VetCompass summary identifies dental disease as a notable issue in Chihuahuas seen in UK first-opinion practices. Brush daily with a small-dog toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste, and schedule professional dental checks as advised.
Obesity The same VetCompass summary flags obesity among notable Chihuahua health concerns. Measure meals, limit uncounted treats and monitor body condition with your veterinarian. Do not reduce food drastically without advice for a growing puppy.
Retained baby teeth VetCompass summary text also identifies retained deciduous teeth as a concern in Chihuahuas. Ask your veterinarian to check the mouth during puppy visits; retained teeth may need treatment to prevent crowding and periodontal problems.

These are parent-breed considerations, not a diagnosis for a Chug, Pom-Chi or any other cross. A mixed dog can inherit none, one or several risks, and it can also develop unrelated conditions. Insurance, preventive care and a written veterinary record help you respond to what your dog actually needs.

Dental care deserves a daily routine

Small dogs can accumulate plaque quickly, so make mouth care part of normal handling from the beginning. PetMD’s Chihuahua care guidance recommends brushing every day. Use a toothbrush designed for a small dog and toothpaste made for pets; human toothpaste can contain ingredients that are unsafe to swallow.

  1. Let your dog taste the veterinary toothpaste from your finger.
  2. Touch the lips and gums briefly, rewarding calm behavior.
  3. Introduce the brush for a few seconds, concentrating on the outer surfaces of the teeth.
  4. Increase duration gradually until you can brush all accessible surfaces daily.
  5. Have a veterinarian examine the mouth and discuss professional cleaning when home brushing is not enough.

Chews and water additives may complement brushing, but they do not replace brushing or a veterinary dental assessment. Stop and seek advice if the mouth is painful, bleeding or unusually smelly.

Feeding, exercise and weight control

Measure food rather than free-feeding. The correct amount depends on age, reproductive status, activity and the calorie density of the diet. Use the dog’s body condition, not the serving suggestion alone, to guide adjustments with your veterinarian.

Provide daily movement suited to the dog’s structure and breathing. Short walks, sniffing games, food puzzles and reward-based training can provide both physical and mental exercise. Avoid forcing strenuous activity in hot weather or in a dog that shows breathing difficulty, weakness or poor heat tolerance.

Routine preventive care should include vaccinations, parasite control, nail and ear checks, and examinations at intervals recommended by your veterinary practice. Puppies and older dogs may need more frequent monitoring than healthy adults.

How to choose a Chihuahua mix responsibly

  1. Clarify the parentage. Ask whether both parents are known, whether the cross was intentional, and which records support the description.
  2. Review health information. Request vaccination, parasite-treatment and medical records. For planned litters, ask about documented patella, cardiac and eye evaluations in Chihuahua parents.
  3. Meet the dog more than once. Observe behavior in a quiet setting and during ordinary activity. A single brief meeting can miss fear, guarding or over-arousal.
  4. Check handling tolerance. Gently practice collaring, touching paws and looking near the mouth only with permission and without forcing the dog. Note whether it can relax afterward.
  5. Plan for training. Arrange a reward-based class or qualified trainer, especially if barking, nipping, reactivity or separation problems appear.
  6. Budget for preventive care. Include dental care, routine examinations, vaccinations, parasite control and possible treatment for inherited or acquired conditions.
  7. Choose based on fit, not a cute name. Match the dog’s observed confidence, activity level and social needs to your household, schedule and experience.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “mix” means healthier. Crossbreeding does not remove all inherited disease, and a mixed dog still needs screening and preventive care.
  • Using appearance to diagnose ancestry. Coat color, ears or muzzle shape cannot confirm which breeds produced a dog.
  • Equating loyalty with easy behavior. Attachment can coexist with guarding, barking or distress when separated.
  • Skipping dental care because the dog is small. Daily brushing is a preventive habit, not an optional cosmetic step.
  • Overfeeding a tiny dog. Small treats can represent a large share of daily calories, so weigh or measure them.
  • Expecting a puppy to reveal its adult traits immediately. Behavior and body shape develop over time; continue socialization and veterinary monitoring.

What “mucho love and loyalty” should mean in practice

The affectionate wording in the title captures why people enjoy Chihuahua crosses, but it should describe a relationship you build rather than a guarantee supplied by a label. Consistent routines, humane training, careful socialization, dental hygiene and veterinary care give a dog the best chance to become a secure companion.

Before relying on any “11 Chihuahua mixes” list, confirm the exact names and the evidence behind each entry. For the documented Chug and Pom-Chi, and for any other cross you investigate, let the individual dog’s behavior and health information guide the decision.
