Woody and Willow are the pair reintroduced in October 2023; Chompy and Chewy were born there in 2024. The Ealing Beaver Project reported the winning entries and a naming ceremony on 20 February 2025.
What are Ealing’s beavers called?
The four selected names for the original resident family are Woody, Willow, Chompy and Chewbacca (Chewy). The Ealing Beaver Project identifies Woody and Willow as the pair reintroduced at Paradise Fields in October 2023, and Chompy and Chewy as kits born in 2024. The project’s report on the naming was published on 20 February 2025.

There is a separate, newer naming story: a Citizen Zoo search result referred to two additional kits and a naming competition. That excerpt does not establish whether the competition is still open or what names were chosen, so the four names above should not be mistaken for confirmed names for those newer kits.
Which children submitted the winning entries?
The project listed seven winning entries across four selected names. Multiple pupils submitted entries that resulted in the same name; the list below preserves that distinction.

How were the pupils recognized?
The pupils whose entries helped name the beavers, along with their families and teachers, were invited to a ceremony and project tour at Paradise Fields on Saturday 15 February 2025. Deputy Mayor of London Mete Coban and London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon Bassam Mahfouz presented awards. Visitors also took a guided look around the landscape shaped by the beavers and searched for signs of their activity, according to the project’s 20 February 2025 report.
How the beavers came to Paradise Fields
Five beavers were released at Paradise Fields on 11 October 2023. London City Hall described the release as the first time beavers had been seen in west London for 400 years. Its announcement names Ealing Wildlife Group, Citizen Zoo, Ealing Council, Friends of Horsenden Hill and Groundwork London as project partners, with support from the Mayor’s Rewild London Fund and Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund. City Hall’s announcement quotes Mayor Sadiq Khan saying he was “delighted to welcome back beavers to West London for the first time in 400 years,” and Dr Sean McCormack, vet and Chair of Ealing Wildlife Group, describing the return as “unbelievably exciting” after substantial work and volunteer effort.

City Hall’s separate Ealing Beaver Project case study describes Paradise Fields as a low-lying meadow and wetland suited to the animals. It says the released group was a mated pair that already had kits, that more than 100 people attended the release, and that the family built five dams within five months. The case study reports a £39,154 grant to Citizen Zoo and a total project cost of £116,544; it does not state the publication year for those figures.

City Hall says airlock gates were installed at entry points to reduce the chance of beavers escaping while keeping the area accessible to visitors. These details help explain how the project combines habitat restoration with public access, but they do not change the naming story: Woody, Willow, Chompy and Chewy are the names reported for the original resident family.
