A fisherman who saw an animal struggling in the water believed he was rescuing a drowning dog. According to an iHeartDogs account published May 3, 2025, the animal that grabbed the life jacket thrown by rescuers was actually a monkey. The story identifies the rescuers as Renato and Neco and says the animal eventually returned to the trees.
What did the fisherman think he was rescuing?
The incident began with an urgent rescue attempt. Renato and Neco reportedly spotted an animal in the water and interpreted its shape and behavior as those of a dog in trouble. They threw a life jacket toward it so it could keep itself afloat and reach their boat.

What was in the water?
Once the animal came close enough to the boat, the rescuers realized it was not a dog. The article describes it as a monkey, apparently a wild animal native to the region, but gives no species-level identification. It is therefore not possible to say whether it was a particular monkey species or to infer its normal habitat from the story alone.

- Adjustable belts and chest strap to keep vest from riding up
- Lightweight durable flotation foam
- Large armholes for comfort
- Open-sided styling
- Bright colors to add visibility on the water
The monkey reportedly clung to the life jacket and used it to help reach the boat. After climbing aboard, it raised one arm and pointed toward the shore. Renato and Neco then steered in that direction.
How did the rescue end?
The monkey left near shore
Near land, the monkey reportedly jumped from the boat to a tree branch. It then disappeared into the surrounding foliage. The account presents this as the end of the encounter, with the animal returning to a wooded area rather than remaining with the rescuers.

What the gestures may—or may not—have meant
The story interprets the pointing gesture as a sign that the monkey wanted to go home. That is an interpretation, not an independently established explanation of the animal’s behavior. The article also reports the rescuers’ speculation that the monkey may have been separated from or ostracized by its troop. No evidence in the account confirms either explanation.

An animal partly submerged in moving water can be difficult to identify, especially when rescuers are focused on preventing drowning. Distance, splashing, poor visibility and the animal’s posture may obscure features that would be obvious on land. In this case, the rescuers acted on the information they had, using a flotation device and bringing the animal toward safety before they could identify it correctly.

The story does not establish whether the monkey entered the water accidentally, was injured, had been displaced from a group or was attempting to reach another location. Those possibilities should not be treated as facts.

A note about using flotation equipment around wildlife
The account specifically mentions a generic life jacket, or personal flotation device. That detail explains how the animal was able to remain supported long enough to reach the boat, but the story does not review the device or establish that any particular design is suitable for wildlife rescue. Boaters should follow local safety rules, keep flotation equipment intended for people properly fitted and accessible, and avoid treating a single dramatic rescue as a substitute for guidance from wildlife authorities.

- Breathable mesh high back for comfort. Back pocket is convenient for storing personal items.
- Double expandable zippered pocket with mesh drainage are good for your valuables.
- SOLAS grade reflective strips provide visibility when paddling at dusk.
Wild animals can bite, scratch or carry diseases even when frightened. If an animal is in danger, people should prioritize their own safety and contact local wildlife professionals when possible rather than attempting to handle it directly.
The takeaway from the fisherman’s surprise
The memorable twist is straightforward: Renato and Neco set out to save what they believed was a dog, then discovered a monkey holding onto the life jacket they had thrown. The monkey reached the boat, was taken toward shore and disappeared into the trees. Beyond those reported actions, the animal’s species, origin and motives remain unknown.
