Chill Dog Breeds: 13 Calm Companions That Love to Lounge

These 13 breeds are often content to relax with their people, but “chill” is a tendency, not a guarantee. Compare size, exercise, grooming, temperament and household requirements before choosing.

Some dogs genuinely enjoy a quiet afternoon beside their person, but “chill” describes a tendency—not a guarantee. The 13 breeds below are often portrayed as calm, affectionate, or content to settle after appropriate exercise and companionship. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel may fit comfortably on a lap; an Irish Wolfhound, Saint Bernard, or Newfoundland is more likely to nap beside you or lean against your legs.

Breed can help you build a shortlist, yet every dog is an individual. As veterinary behaviorist Leslie Sinn, DVM, DACVB, CPDT-KA, puts it: “Don’t just assume an easygoing breed always means a calm dog.” Temperament, early socialization, training, health, age, and daily routine all matter.

What “chill” means in a dog

A calm dog can relax in the home, recover from ordinary excitement, and enjoy quiet contact with people. That does not mean the dog needs no walks, play, training, sniffing, or mental enrichment. A breed described as mellow may still be athletic, vocal, independent, sensitive, or demanding when its needs are ignored.

The list below is an editorial selection of breed tendencies, not a scientific ranking of the 13 calmest dogs. The American Kennel Club recognizes 201 breeds (accessed 2026), but its temperament guidance also stresses that upbringing and care strongly influence behavior.

13 dog breeds often happy to lounge with their people

1. French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are commonly described as snuggly, devoted, goofy, and eager for attention. Their compact size can suit apartment living, seniors, or families with children when the individual dog is well matched and supervised. They often prefer being near their people rather than spending long periods alone.

“Small” does not automatically mean low-maintenance. Plan for reward-based training, daily opportunities to move and explore, and careful heat management. A flat-faced dog may struggle in hot or humid conditions, so quiet indoor companionship should not become an excuse to skip appropriate activity or veterinary care.

2. Standard Poodle

Standard Poodles combine intelligence with an affectionate, playful nature. Many are capable of settling calmly after exercise and training, and their eagerness to learn makes teaching a reliable settle cue practical. They can be a good choice for an owner who wants a cuddly companion but also enjoys structured activities.

The trade-off is mental and physical demand: this is not a decorative couch dog. Daily exercise, problem-solving games, and regular interaction help prevent boredom. The coat is often described as lower-allergen, but “hypoallergenic” is not absolute; grooming appointments and home coat care remain part of ownership.

3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier is the clearest traditional lap-dog example on this list. It is usually affectionate, people-oriented, and happy to curl up close, while still enjoying daily walks and games of fetch. Cavaliers generally prefer company, so a household that is away for most of the day should plan thoughtful companionship and enrichment.

Its small size makes physical handling easier than with giant breeds, but children still need to learn gentle interaction. A calm adult Cavalier may nap for hours; a young one will need training, play, and safe social experiences before it reliably settles.

4. Basset Hound

Basset Hounds are often calm, bright companions that enjoy using their exceptional sense of smell and then resting. Scent games and leisurely walks can satisfy their natural interests without turning every outing into high-impact exercise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They can also be independent and stubborn. The American Kennel Club recommends patient, persistent training, and that advice matters when teaching recall, loose-leash walking, or a polite greeting. A Basset’s relaxed appearance should not be mistaken for automatic obedience, and its long body and ears require routine care.

5. Irish Wolfhound

Irish Wolfhounds are known for a loyal, unflappable manner and a gentle presence with their families. Their size changes what “lap time” means: most will lounge beside you, rest their head on your legs, or occupy a substantial section of the sofa rather than fit on a lap.

Secure outdoor space, early socialization, and consistent training are especially important. A giant dog can accidentally knock over a toddler or smaller child even without aggressive intent, so supervision and age-appropriate boundaries are essential. Their calm adult temperament does not eliminate the need for room to move or regular exercise.

6. Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards are often portrayed as loving, patient, and steady. They can be devoted household companions and may enjoy quiet time with their owners after a walk and some training.

Size is the central practical issue. The American Kennel Club emphasizes that Saint Bernards need training, time with their people, and management suited to a giant body. Make sure doorways, sleeping areas, vehicle access, and children’s play spaces can accommodate a large dog before choosing one.

7. Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) is frequently described as quiet, attentive, and closely bonded to its household. Hairless and short-coated varieties exist, and an individual Xolo may enjoy daily jaunts, games of fetch, and then a calm period beside its person.

They are not automatically allergy-free. Allergens come from skin cells, saliva, and other sources as well as fur, so anyone with allergies should spend time with the breed before committing. Their need for attention and activity also means that a quiet home still needs a daily routine.

8. Newfoundland

Newfoundlands are laid-back, affectionate working dogs with an even-tempered reputation. They may be wonderfully gentle family companions and happy to lie near their people, but “laid-back” does not mean inactive.

This is an enormous breed that often enjoys outdoor time and needs a home prepared for its footprint, strength, grooming, and drool. As with other giant dogs, supervise interactions with young children and teach the dog how to move calmly through crowded rooms.

9. English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are often couch-loving and relatively quiet, making them appealing to people who want a companion for relaxed indoor living. Early, reward-based training helps turn that easygoing potential into safe household manners.

Heat is a serious consideration. PetMD notes that the breed’s flat muzzle can be associated with breathing difficulty and heat sensitivity. Avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, provide cooling and ventilation, and seek veterinary advice if breathing appears labored. A Bulldog that likes to lounge still needs carefully managed movement and enrichment.

10. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are commonly described as sweet-natured, social, and family-oriented. Many enjoy being near people, learning household routines, and settling after walks, retrieving games, or training sessions.

Do not assume every Golden will welcome every stranger or animal. Socialization, supervision, and individual temperament determine whether interactions are comfortable. Their size, shedding, and enthusiasm also require space and a plan for exercise even when the adult dog is calm indoors.

11. Greyhound

Greyhounds can surprise people: despite their sprinting ability, many are relaxed house dogs that enjoy cuddling and leisurely, sniff-focused walks. A retired racer may appreciate a predictable routine and a soft place to sleep.

Prey drive varies, and PetMD cautions that some Greyhounds—particularly former racers—may chase cats or other small animals. Introductions should be controlled, and off-leash access requires secure fencing or another safe environment. Their quiet home behavior does not remove the need for regular movement.

12. Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are often loyal, trainable, and able to shift from curiosity and play to relaxing with the family. Their willingness to work can make positive-reinforcement training effective, including teaching a mat settle or calm greeting.

Young Labs are frequently energetic and mouthy, so a household seeking an immediately placid dog should consider age and prior training rather than breed reputation. Daily exercise, retrieving games, food puzzles, and social contact help an adult Lab remain balanced.

13. Pug

Pugs are commonly described as affectionate, playful, and mellow, with a strong preference for being close to their people. They can enjoy a relaxed home routine, provided activity is adjusted for weather and the individual dog’s breathing and fitness.

Pugs shed, despite their short coat. Keep a grooming brush available and establish a regular cleaning routine. Their flat faces also warrant caution in heat and during strenuous exercise; quiet companionship should be comfortable, not forced by respiratory limitations.

How to choose the right calm companion

Start with the home, not the breed label

Measure practical constraints first: stairs, flooring, vehicle space, yard security, neighbors who may hear barking, and the size of children or pets already at home. A gentle giant can still be unsafe in a cramped hallway, while a small dog may be a poor fit if it cannot tolerate long periods alone.

Match energy and enrichment honestly

Ask what you can provide every day, not only on weekends. Walks, sniffing, retrieving, food puzzles, short training sessions, and calm social contact all count. A dog that is under-exercised or bored may bark, chew, pace, or demand attention even if its breed is described as mellow.

Plan for noise, shedding, grooming, and prey drive

Consider whether you can live with shedding, drool, coat appointments, scent hound independence, or a Greyhound’s potential interest in small animals. These are lifestyle decisions, not minor details discovered after adoption.

Evaluate children and other pets individually

Breed tendencies can inform a shortlist, but they cannot guarantee that a dog will tolerate rough handling, cats, livestock, visitors, or busy children. Use gates, leashes, crates, and active supervision during introductions. Teach children to leave a resting dog alone and never use a lap as a restraint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training and socialization for a dog that can actually settle

Early, positive socialization exposes a puppy or newly adopted dog to people, surfaces, sounds, handling, and environments at a manageable pace. Reward calm choices—four paws on the floor, lying on a mat, looking at a trigger and disengaging—rather than punishing excitement after it has escalated.

Training cannot guarantee a particular temperament, but it can make desirable behavior easier to repeat. Build a predictable routine, increase alone time gradually, provide safe resting spaces, and arrange veterinary help for sudden changes in behavior, panic, pain, or breathing. Calmness is most reliable when the dog feels safe and its physical and mental needs are met.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a breed solely because an online list calls it calm.
  • Assuming a giant dog belongs on a child’s lap or can safely share a crowded room without supervision.
  • Skipping exercise because a dog enjoys naps.
  • Treating “hypoallergenic” or hairless as an allergy guarantee.
  • Leaving a people-oriented dog alone for long periods without a gradual plan.
  • Using punishment instead of reward-based training to teach settling and polite greetings.
  • Ignoring heat, breathing, prey-drive, or mobility risks that affect an individual dog.
