Choose a cat tree around your cat’s habits, not its height alone: match the scratching surface to what your cat already uses, make sure the structure is steady, and put it where your cat can comfortably reach it. If scratching is the main goal, start beside the spot your cat already scratches; if climbing or resting is the goal, choose an accessible place the cat already spends time.
How to choose a cat tree
Before comparing designs, observe your cat. Note whether it scratches vertically or horizontally, which materials it prefers, and whether it already rests in elevated places. These habits are more useful than choosing the tallest tree or assuming every cat prefers the same texture.

Match the scratching surface to your cat
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends matching a scratching surface to the cat’s preferred material and orientation. Carpet may suit a cat that scratches carpet; sisal or rope-like material may suit one that targets nubby furniture. For horizontal scratching, try a flat cardboard scratcher or a log. A tree can combine scratching areas with climbing perches, but the scratch surface should fit the behavior you want to support. Cornell’s guidance on destructive behavior describes these preferences.

Check height, access, and stability
A scratching post or structure should be stable during use and tall enough for your cat to stretch fully. Cornell’s recommendation is at least the cat’s standing height with its front legs outstretched. Consider whether your cat can comfortably reach the perches: a low perch or another kind of vertical space may suit a cat that rarely climbs better than a tall tower.

Compare the usable height, footprint, base, wobble, perch arrangement, scratch-surface orientation, and access for your particular cat. If the tree is tall, follow its installation instructions and secure it as directed. VCA Animal Hospitals advises anchoring a tall cat tree to the wall to prevent injury to the cat or other household members. Its guidance does not specify universal hardware, so use the instructions supplied for the tree and the appropriate fixing for your wall. VCA’s guide to making vertical space for cats covers anchoring and alternatives.
Where to put a cat tree
For scratching: start beside the existing target
If you want to redirect scratching, place the new scratcher right beside the furniture or other spot your cat already scratches. Cornell advises moving it gradually if you ultimately want it elsewhere. If your cat scratches in several locations, a scratching surface near each one may be more useful than a single tree across the room.

For climbing and resting: choose a usable, safe location
Place a perch where your cat can reach and use it without an avoidable hazard. A window view can provide visual stimulation, and an indoor-cat veterinary guide recommends window access, preferably with a perch. That is a practical option, not a rule: a tree does not have to be beside a window, and individual cats may prefer other spots.

Check the installation surface
For shelves and window seats, check the product’s weight limit and installation requirements before letting a cat use them. VCA notes that shelves may need to support more than one cat in a multi-cat home, and that a window seat should be approved for the cat’s size. A tall freestanding tree should be secured according to its instructions.
What if a full cat tree is not a good fit?
Vertical space does not have to come from a floor-standing tower. Depending on your cat’s mobility, your room, and the equipment’s load limits, alternatives include wall shelves, a window seat, a climbing post, or safely repurposed furniture. Check the rated weight and installation requirements for any shelf or window seat rather than assuming it will hold a cat.

These options are not interchangeable in every home. A freestanding tree can combine perches and scratching surfaces; shelves use wall space but depend on secure installation; a window perch provides a view if the location and seat are appropriate. Choose by footprint, accessible height, stability, scratch texture and orientation, resting or hiding space, and rated load. The veterinary guidance supports these as possible ways to provide vertical space, not as a universal ranking.
How to encourage your cat to use it
Put the tree or scratcher near an existing preferred spot first. Reward appropriate scratching with treats, strokes, or praise; Cornell also suggests trying treats or catnip on or near the new surface. If the cat begins using a post, keep it even when it becomes worn and ragged: wear is a sign that it is serving its purpose.

For a sedentary or hesitant cat, the indoor-cat veterinary guide suggests offering part of a meal or treats on a tree. Keep the invitation low-pressure and let the cat decide whether to climb. Do not force access to a perch the cat cannot reach comfortably.
A cat tree is one part of an enriched home
Scratching and elevated resting places are useful resources, but they do not meet every environmental need. The AAFP and ISFM feline environmental needs guidelines describe a broader approach that includes a safe haven, separated resources, scratching and resting areas, play, and positive human-cat interactions. A cat tree belongs within that wider setup rather than serving as a substitute for it. Read the AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines.
