Repeated meowing, pawing, following, or nudging can be a cat’s way of asking for food, play, petting, or access—but “attention-seeking” describes a possible motive, not a diagnosis. First consider whether the behavior is new or has changed, and ask a veterinarian about persistent or unusual vocalizing, especially in an older cat or alongside other changes. If health concerns have been considered, predictable play, exploration, and rewards for calm behavior can help meet your cat’s needs without making every meow the cue for a response.
What attention-seeking behavior can look like
A cat may repeatedly meow or yowl, paw at you, follow you from room to room, or initiate contact when seeking petting or play. Vocalizing can also be a greeting or a request for food or access. These behaviors alone cannot tell you why your cat is doing them.

Look at the pattern in context: when it happens, what preceded it, and what the cat seems to get afterward. Most important, compare it with that individual cat’s usual behavior. A familiar request at a familiar time is different from a sudden increase or a new kind of cry.

When meowing or social behavior may signal a health problem
A newly louder, more persistent, worsening, or otherwise unusual vocalization deserves attention to your cat’s health. Contact your veterinarian for advice if the change persists, or if it appears with changes in appetite, sleep, mobility, litter-box habits, or signs of distress. Do not assume that an older cat is simply being demanding: age-related behavior changes can have medical or degenerative causes.
Veterinary guidance identifies pain, endocrine problems, and hypertension among possible medical contributors to vocalization in some middle-aged and older cats. Night vocalizing in older cats may also occur with conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hypertension, or cognitive dysfunction. Only a veterinarian can assess whether any of these apply; one behavior is not enough to diagnose a condition. Why a cat may keep asking for attention
A request that has worked before
If meowing has sometimes led to food, affection, play, or an open door, the cat may learn that vocalizing can bring that outcome. Even occasional responses may maintain the pattern. When a familiar response stops, vocalizing can temporarily intensify before it eases; VCA describes this as an extinction burst. That learning process does not mean the cat is manipulating you or that attention is the only cause.
Too little opportunity for play or exploration
Some cats may seek more contact when they lack suitable activity, exploration, or social play. A routine change, stress, or disruption at home may also be relevant. There is no single cause or schedule that fits every cat, so consider the setting as well as the behavior.

What to do about repeated attention-seeking
1. Check for a change and involve your veterinarian when appropriate
Note when the behavior occurs and what else has changed. Arrange veterinary advice for a sudden, persistent, worsening, or unusual pattern, particularly for an older cat or when appetite, sleep, movement, litter-box habits, or apparent comfort have changed. A health assessment should come before treating new vocalization as a training problem.
2. Offer predictable play and exploration
Provide regular opportunities for social play and for exploring, climbing, and perching. If your cat tends to seek you out at a predictable time, try offering play shortly beforehand. VCA’s indoor-cat enrichment guidance describes play and environmental activities as ways to provide stimulation.

A wand toy can support interactive play; rotate toys if novelty helps your cat stay interested. Supervise play and put wand or string toys away afterward, since swallowing string or rope can be dangerous. Food puzzles or food-dispensing toys can offer another way to work for food and explore. Choose activities that suit your cat’s interest and mobility; no toy is a guaranteed way to stop vocalizing or a substitute for medical care.
3. Reward calm moments consistently
When practical, give attention, play, or a suitable treat when your cat is quiet or settled rather than making vocalizing the reliable trigger for that reward. Keep the approach consistent among household members. If you stop responding to a behavior that has been rewarded, it may briefly intensify; plan for that possibility while continuing to meet the cat’s needs at predictable times.

4. Avoid shouting or punishment
Shouting can add attention to the episode, and physical punishment is not an appropriate way to change the behavior. Focus instead on checking health, providing suitable outlets, and reinforcing the behavior you want.
