The best bearded dragon feeder-insect keeper is the smallest enclosure that gives your insects enough usable space, strong ventilation and an escape-resistant lid. For a modest number of crickets, use a ventilated critter keeper or appropriately sized plastic keeper. Move to a larger screened aquarium or ventilated tub when the order is larger. Roaches can also be held in a glass aquarium with a screen lid, but the available care guidance does not set a universal capacity limit.
“Best” is therefore a fit decision, not a single winning product. Match the keeper to the insect species, quantity, access you need at feeding time and how easily you can clean it.

What a feeder-insect keeper is—and what it is not
A feeder-insect keeper is a temporary holding container for live food before it is offered to your bearded dragon. It is separate from the dragon’s terrarium or vivarium. The keeper’s job is to contain insects, provide enough airflow and make removal and cleaning practical; it is not a substitute for the reptile’s habitat.

Crickets are active, climb readily and can escape through surprisingly small gaps. Dubia.com’s cricket guidance summarizes the basic requirement this way: “Crickets do best in an adequately sized and ventilated enclosure that they can’t escape from.” You can read the full Dubia.com Cricket Care Sheet.

Container style matters less than those functions. A purpose-built plastic keeper, a perforated storage tub or a screened-cover aquarium can all work when their usable volume, ventilation and lid security fit the insects you are holding.
Quick recommendations by situation
| Your situation | Most practical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A small number of crickets for occasional feeding | Small ventilated critter keeper or small purpose-built plastic keeper | Compact, easy to access and usually sufficient when the quantity is genuinely small. |
| Regular cricket orders or a visibly crowded small keeper | Larger ventilated plastic tub or screened-cover aquarium | More floor space and climbing room reduce crowding; care guidance gives 5-gallon and 10-gallon examples for larger quantities. |
| You want a manufactured keeper with a door and several size choices | An appropriately sized Exo Terra Faunarium | The manufacturer lists six sizes and describes side ventilation, a transparent access door and easy cleaning/disinfection. |
| Holding feeder roaches | Glass aquarium with a screen lid | Dubia.com identifies this as a ventilated holding option; no universal size threshold is stated. |
These are use-case recommendations based on documented features and care guidance, not independent product-test rankings.
How much space do feeder crickets need?
Quantity is the first sizing question. A 4 × 6 inch keeper may work for a small number of crickets, according to Dubia.com’s FAQ on housing feeder crickets. That is an example for a small group, not a stocking formula for every order. The FAQ is available at How do I house/store feeder crickets?.
When the number of crickets increases, the same footprint can become difficult to ventilate, access and keep orderly. Dubia.com’s care sheet gives two larger enclosure examples: a 5-gallon aquarium measuring 8 × 16 × 12 inches and a 10-gallon aquarium measuring 20 × 10 × 12 inches. The sheet presents these as examples for larger quantities, not as a universal ratio between cricket count and gallons.

Use usable space, not the outside dimensions alone
Measure the area where insects can actually move. A keeper filled with egg crates, feed dishes or other inserts has less open floor than its external dimensions suggest. Include the height and width needed to remove insects without dismantling the entire container, but do not treat vertical volume as a replacement for adequate floor area when crickets are packed together.
When to move up a size
- Crickets are stacked on top of one another whenever the lid opens.
- You cannot place climbing surfaces without blocking the access opening.
- Removing a few insects requires disturbing the whole group.
- Condensation, stale air or a persistent odor suggests that the container is not exchanging air effectively.
- The lid no longer closes reliably after adding egg crates or a feeding dish.
Those signs indicate that a larger enclosure or a simpler interior layout will make management safer. They do not establish a precise number of crickets that any particular keeper can hold.
Ventilation and escape control are non-negotiable
Airflow and containment must be solved together. Large openings improve ventilation but create escape routes unless they are covered with secure mesh. Tiny perforations may contain insects yet provide too little air exchange once the enclosure is heavily stocked.

- Ventilation area: Look for screened panels or mesh-covered openings rather than relying on a sealed lid.
- Mesh security: Check that the screen is firmly attached and has no lifted corners, tears or gaps around the frame.
- Lid fit: Close every latch or panel and test the seam around the entire perimeter. A lid that sits loosely is an escape risk.
- Door geometry: If the keeper has a small access door, make sure it closes flush after feeding or removing insects.
- Placement: Keep the container where it cannot be knocked over and where the ventilation openings remain unobstructed.
Dubia.com specifically recommends an adequately ventilated enclosure that insects cannot escape from. A screened-cover aquarium or a similarly sized plastic tub with a mesh-covered ventilation opening is given as an option in its cricket guidance.

Keeper options compared
| Option | Documented fit | Strengths to look for | Limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small critter keeper or purpose-built plastic keeper | Common choice for a small number of crickets; purpose-built keepers are also marketed for live-food transport. | Compact footprint, quick access and simple cleaning when the lid and ventilation are well designed. | Small-quantity suitability should not be extended to a bulk cricket order. Verify usable volume and lid security. |
| Exo Terra Faunarium | The manufacturer says the Faunarium family accommodates insects and live-food transport; six sizes are listed. | Plastic construction, side ventilation and a transparent access door; the large model is 14.5 × 8.5 × 10 inches. | Dimensions do not prove a safe capacity or lifespan for a particular feeder load. Select the size for your quantity. |
| Larger screened-cover aquarium or ventilated plastic tub | Cricket-care guidance gives 5-gallon (8 × 16 × 12 inch) and 10-gallon (20 × 10 × 12 inch) examples for larger quantities. | More floor area, room for climbing surfaces and broad access for removal and cleaning. | Inspect mesh, seams and the lid carefully. The examples are guidance, not a universal stocking chart. |
| Glass aquarium with a screen lid | Dubia.com identifies this as a ventilated holding-container option for feeder roaches. | Clear visibility and a screened top can provide straightforward access and airflow. | The cited source gives no one-size-fits-all capacity limit for roaches. |
Small critter keepers: when they are enough
A small critter keeper is sensible when you buy or receive only a small number of crickets and plan to use them promptly. Its advantages are practical: it takes little room, lets you reach insects quickly and can be removed from the feeding area without handling a large container.
Before choosing one, compare the actual interior rather than the product name. A keeper with a wide base, a secure lid and a screened or perforated ventilation section is more useful than a taller container with little floor space. Ensure that an egg crate can stand inside without pressing against the lid or blocking the opening.
If the insects arrive in a quantity that fills the container, do not force the fit because the keeper was convenient to buy. Transfer them to a larger tub or aquarium that allows airflow and access. The 4 × 6 inch example from Dubia.com is specifically associated with a small number of crickets.

Those are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent findings about escape rates, cricket survival or maximum capacity. Use the dimensions to decide whether your insects, climbing material and feeding container will fit with room to work. Do not infer that the large model can hold a particular number of crickets simply from its measurements.
When a Faunarium is a good match
- You want a ready-made plastic keeper instead of modifying a storage tub.
- A built-in access door will make repeated feeding or insect removal easier.
- You need one of several listed sizes as your feeder quantity changes.
- You prefer a container described by its manufacturer as suitable for transporting live foods.
Checks to make before loading it
- Compare the internal floor area with the quantity you normally receive.
- Confirm that the side ventilation remains clear after adding egg crates or other inserts.
- Close the access door and main lid, then inspect all seams for gaps.
- Plan where the keeper will sit so ventilation panels are not pressed against a wall or another container.
Larger tubs and aquariums for cricket orders
A larger container is the safer direction when you regularly keep more crickets than a small keeper can handle. Dubia.com’s cricket care sheet gives a 5-gallon aquarium measuring 8 × 16 × 12 inches and a 10-gallon aquarium measuring 20 × 10 × 12 inches as examples. Both examples pair the larger enclosure with ventilation and escape control, such as a screened cover.
A ventilated plastic tub can serve the same role if its ventilation opening is covered with secure mesh and the lid closes firmly. Plastic is convenient to lift and clean; an aquarium makes the insects easy to see and can provide a broad, rigid base. The better choice is the one that gives you enough usable floor area and a lid you can inspect and secure.
Set up climbing space without sacrificing airflow
Dubia.com recommends adding egg crates for crickets. The crates provide climbing surfaces and help reduce crowding-related crushing. Arrange them so air can move around them and so you can remove one section at a time. Do not fill every inch of the container: a keeper that technically holds the inserts but leaves no working access is undersized for your routine.

Why a bigger container is not automatically better
An oversized enclosure can occupy more space than you can clean and may make it harder to find a few insects at feeding time. Size up when quantity demands it, but keep the layout simple enough that you can inspect the lid, remove insects and disinfect the empty container without a complicated teardown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Holding feeder roaches
Roaches have different handling needs from crickets, so do not transfer cricket stocking assumptions to them. Dubia.com’s FAQ on extending the life of dubia roaches identifies a glass aquarium with a screen lid as a suitable holding-container option. The source does not state a universal capacity limit, so choose the aquarium by your actual quantity and the access and ventilation you can maintain. The guidance is at How can I keep my dubia roaches alive longer?.
For roaches, inspect the screen-lid frame and the junction between lid and glass just as carefully as you would for crickets. If you also keep crickets, label containers so you do not apply one insect’s quantity assumptions or handling routine to the other.
A step-by-step keeper selection method
- Identify the insect. Start with crickets, roaches or another feeder species. The available guidance is most specific for cricket enclosure size and separately identifies a screened aquarium for roaches.
- Estimate the largest quantity you will hold at one time. Use your normal delivery size, not the number you hope to feed immediately. A small keeper is for a small number; larger orders need substantially more enclosure space.
- Measure the available location. Record the maximum width, depth and height where the container will sit while keeping every ventilation panel open.
- Choose a container category. Select a small keeper for modest quantities, a manufactured multi-size keeper when its access and construction suit you, or a larger tub/aquarium for bulkier cricket orders.
- Verify ventilation. Prefer screened or mesh-covered openings. Make sure inserts will not cover them.
- Verify escape resistance. Test the main lid, access door, screen and corners. If you can see a continuous gap, assume an insect can find it.
- Plan the interior. Leave room for egg crates where appropriate, a feeding area and your hand or tool to remove insects without crushing them.
- Check cleaning access. You should be able to remove all inserts, wash the container and disinfect it according to the material’s care instructions.
- Run an empty-container test. Close the keeper, inspect it from all sides and open and close every door before introducing live insects.
Cleaning and routine access
Easy cleaning is a selection criterion, not a cosmetic extra. The manufacturer describes the Faunarium as easy to clean and disinfect, but that claim applies to the product description rather than an independent test. Any keeper you choose should let you remove the inserts, reach corners and close the lid securely after cleaning.
A practical maintenance sequence
- Move the insects to a secure temporary container before washing the keeper.
- Remove egg crates and dishes so you can inspect the entire base, corners and lid.
- Clear debris and residue before applying a cleaning or disinfecting product compatible with the container material.
- Rinse or wipe as required by that product’s directions, then allow all surfaces to dry before returning insects.
- Reinstall inserts without blocking mesh or creating a path to the lid.
- Close and test the keeper again before putting it back in its storage location.
This sequence is a handling workflow, not a claim about a particular disinfectant or a guaranteed insect-survival interval. Follow the product label and your feeder supplier’s species-specific instructions.
Troubleshooting common keeper problems
| Problem | Likely selection or setup issue | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Crickets gather in a dense pile | The container or usable floor area is too small for the quantity, or inserts leave no open space. | Move to a larger tub or aquarium and rearrange egg crates to create climbing room and airflow. |
| Crickets escape when the keeper is opened | The lid or access door is loose, or the opening is too large to control during removal. | Use a keeper with a more secure closure and a manageable access door; inspect the entire seam before reloading. |
| The container feels stale or poorly ventilated | Ventilation openings are too small or blocked by a wall, lid insert or dense interior layout. | Clear the mesh, reposition the keeper and choose a screened-cover design or larger ventilated enclosure. |
| You cannot reach insects without dismantling everything | The keeper lacks practical access or is packed beyond its usable capacity. | Choose a container with a transparent access door or broad opening, and leave a clear working area. |
| Cleaning takes too long | The container has inaccessible corners or too many permanently fitted parts. | Switch to a design that allows complete insert removal and straightforward washing and disinfection. |
| A roach container is difficult to manage | Cricket-specific assumptions were applied to a different insect. | Use the screened glass-aquarium option identified in the roach care FAQ and size it to your actual quantity. |
Selection checklist
- Does the container match the insect species you are holding?
- Is it large enough for your largest expected quantity, rather than just today’s feeding portion?
- Is there screened or mesh-covered ventilation that remains unobstructed?
- Does the lid or access door close flush and stay closed?
- Can you add climbing space for crickets without blocking airflow?
- Can you remove insects without crushing or releasing the rest?
- Can every insert and interior surface be reached for cleaning and disinfection?
- Will the keeper fit in its storage location without covering ventilation panels?
- Have you checked the empty container for gaps before loading live insects?
What the available evidence can—and cannot—call “best”
The cited care sheets and manufacturer pages document suitable container types, example cricket enclosure dimensions and features of one plastic keeper family. They do not provide independent side-by-side tests, escape-rate measurements, survival percentages, odor comparisons or a universal capacity chart. No source establishes one keeper as objectively best across brands, insect species and quantities.
Use the documented fit instead: a small ventilated keeper for a small cricket quantity, a larger screened tub or aquarium when cricket numbers rise, a properly sized Faunarium when its access and ventilation match your routine, and a screened glass aquarium as a documented roach-holding option. That approach gives your bearded dragon’s feeders a secure temporary home without pretending that one container works for every keeper.
