Chronic Wasting Disease: The Fatal Deer Infection That Spreads Before Symptoms

Chronic wasting disease kills affected deer, elk and related cervids, but infected animals can shed prions for months or years without visible symptoms. Here is how CWD spreads, what CDC says about people and venison, and the precautions hunters should take.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal prion disease of deer, elk, moose, reindeer and related animals. An infected cervid can shed infectious prions in saliva, urine and feces for months or years while appearing normal. That symptom-free incubation is why watching an animal is not a reliable way to decide whether it is infected.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says CWD has not been shown to infect people and no human infections have been reported. It also says scientists are still studying whether contact with an infected animal or eating its meat could affect people. Hunters should follow current state wildlife and health rules, use protective handling practices and strongly consider testing harvested animals before eating the meat.

What chronic wasting disease is

CWD is caused by prions: misfolded proteins that accumulate in an animal’s nervous system and other tissues. Unlike bacteria or viruses, prions are not living organisms. They can persist in soil and on contaminated material, which makes environmental control difficult.

The disease affects members of the deer family (cervids), including white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose and reindeer. There is no vaccine or treatment for CWD in animals. Once an animal develops the disease, it is fatal.

CDC describes CWD as a disease of cervids, not a condition that affects every wild animal. A sick deer may have another illness, starvation or injury, so appearance alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Laboratory testing of appropriate tissues is required.

CDC’s animal-disease page reported CWD in at least 36 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces as of August 2025. That is a dated distribution count, not an October 2026 total. A state without a reported detection is not necessarily disease-free; CDC cautions that CWD may be present before it is detected.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports infection rates of up to 30% in some regions where CWD is established. This is a regional upper bound, not a national average. The USGS page was accessed October 13, 2026 and displays a publication or update date of approximately 2025; local prevalence can be much lower or higher.

Why an infected animal can look healthy

CWD has a long incubation period. An animal may carry and shed prions for months to years before neurological or physical signs become obvious. During that interval it can move through a herd, feed at shared sites and contaminate the environment.

APHIS notes that infected cervids shed prions in feces, urine and saliva during incubation. The animal does not need to be stumbling or visibly ill to contribute to transmission. Prions released into soil can remain infectious because they do not readily degrade.

This creates two separate questions:

  • Is the animal infected? A healthy appearance cannot answer this.
  • Is the animal showing clinical disease? Visible signs may answer this only late in the course, and the same signs can have other causes.

For hunters, the practical consequence is simple: do not use a visual inspection as a substitute for testing or local health guidance.

How CWD spreads among cervids

Direct contact and body fluids

CDC says researchers believe CWD prions spread through body fluids, including saliva, urine, feces and blood. Nose-to-nose contact, shared feeding areas and contact with contaminated carcass material can all create opportunities for exposure.

Contaminated soil, food and water

Transmission is not limited to one sick animal touching another. Prions can contaminate soil, vegetation, feed, mineral licks and water. A new animal entering a contaminated area may encounter prions even when no visibly ill deer is present.

Environmental persistence

Prions bind to soil and can remain in the environment for long periods. Normal weathering does not reliably remove them, and moving an infected carcass or contaminated equipment can extend the area of contamination. This persistence is one reason wildlife agencies regulate carcass transport and disposal.

Signs of CWD—and why they are not a field diagnosis

Clinical signs generally appear after a long incubation period. Reported signs include:

Can people get CWD from deer meat?

CDC’s current wording is deliberately qualified: The disease hasn’t been shown to infect people. No human CWD infection has been reported. At the same time, CDC says it is not known whether people could become infected and that scientists continue studying possible effects of contact with infected animals or eating meat from them.

Those statements are not contradictory. “No infection has been demonstrated” describes the evidence to date; it does not establish that transmission is impossible. CWD is a prion disease, and other prion diseases in animals and people have serious consequences, so avoiding unnecessary exposure is prudent.

People who hunt or eat venison should use the current recommendations from their state wildlife and public-health agencies. Rules differ by jurisdiction, including where testing is available, which carcasses may be transported and how meat must be handled.

What hunters should do before eating venison

CDC recommends the following precautions in areas with CWD activity. They reduce avoidable exposure but do not sterilize a carcass or guarantee that meat is safe.

  1. Check local rules before hunting. Review your state or provincial wildlife agency’s CWD map, carcass-transport restrictions, sample-collection instructions and testing options. Requirements can change as detections change.
  2. Do not harvest an animal that looks sick or acts strangely. Do not touch or eat an animal found dead. Report unusual animals through the channel designated by your wildlife agency.
  3. Wear disposable gloves. Use latex or rubber gloves while field-dressing and handling the carcass. Avoid contact between body fluids and cuts or mucous membranes.
  4. Use dedicated field tools. Keep a field-dressing knife and other equipment separate from kitchen knives and kitchen tools. A dedicated knife is a handling precaution, not a prion decontamination system.
  5. Avoid high-risk tissues. Do not handle or consume the brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils or other internal organs unless your wildlife agency gives different, specific instructions. CDC especially advises avoiding the brain and spine.
  6. Prevent cross-contamination. Keep the carcass, gloves and tools away from food-preparation areas. Follow local directions for bagging, disposal and transport.
  7. Arrange testing. Ask your state agency or an approved laboratory whether it accepts hunter-submitted samples, which tissue is required and how the sample must be collected, chilled, labeled and shipped.
  8. Wait for the result before eating. If the animal tests positive, do not eat the meat. If a processor handles the carcass, ask whether your animal will be processed individually and kept separate from other customers’ meat.

Do not rely on boiling, freezing, ordinary household disinfectants or cooking temperatures as a proven way to neutralize prions. The official guidance is to prevent exposure, remove specified tissues and use approved testing and disposal procedures.

How CWD testing works

CWD is diagnosed after death by testing specified tissues, usually from lymph nodes or the brainstem. The exact tissue, collection method and acceptable sample condition depend on the laboratory and the jurisdiction. APHIS describes fee-for-service laboratory testing for hunter samples, but there is no single national price, turnaround time or submission rule.

Option What to verify Why it matters
State wildlife agency testing Whether testing is required or recommended; drop-off locations; approved collection method; result-delivery process State programs may provide instructions or routes that private submissions cannot replace.
Hunter-submitted laboratory test Whether the laboratory accepts individual hunter samples, required tissue, packaging, shipping, fee and expected turnaround A lab may reject an unsuitable sample or provide a result too late for planned meat use.
Processor-coordinated testing Whether the processor collects the correct tissue and keeps your carcass separate while awaiting results Individual processing prevents meat from being mixed with other animals if a result is positive.

Contact the relevant agency or laboratory before cutting the carcass. Do not assume a test from one state, season or lab is valid under another jurisdiction’s rules. A negative result is evidence about the submitted animal and sample; it does not mean every animal in the area is free of CWD.

What to do if you encounter a suspicious or dead cervid

If the animal is alive but abnormal

Keep your distance and do not approach, feed or handle it. Note the location, time and behavior from a safe distance, then report it to the state or provincial wildlife agency. Follow instructions about whether an agency employee should collect a sample.

If you find a carcass

Do not touch, move, butcher or consume it unless officials specifically direct you to do so. A carcass can contain infectious material even when no obvious disease signs are visible. Report the location and any identifying details through the local wildlife authority.

If you accidentally handle an animal

Stop work, remove contaminated gloves carefully and wash exposed skin with soap and water. Keep contaminated clothing and tools away from food areas, and ask the wildlife agency or public-health department for site-specific advice. Do not improvise a chemical treatment and assume it eliminates prions.

Why herd and land management is difficult

CWD control is challenging because animals can transmit prions before symptoms, infected animals may travel across administrative boundaries and the environment can remain contaminated after a carcass is gone. Management may involve surveillance, harvest rules, carcass movement limits, targeted population reduction or restrictions on feeding and baiting. The appropriate measure depends on local ecology and agency policy.

A detection in one county does not mean every deer there is infected, and absence of a detection does not prove absence. Surveillance results are shaped by how many animals are tested, which tissues are submitted and where sampling occurs. Geographic numbers should therefore be read with their date and scope.

Key decisions for a hunter

  • Before the hunt: learn the current CWD status and testing process for the exact hunting unit.
  • At the shot: pass on animals that look sick or behave abnormally.
  • During field dressing: wear gloves, avoid the brain and spine, and keep field tools out of the kitchen.
  • Before processing: confirm sample requirements and whether the processor keeps animals separate.
  • Before eating: wait for the test result when testing is available and follow the agency’s positive-result instructions.

Bottom line

CWD is fatal to affected cervids and can spread while they look completely healthy. It moves through body fluids and contaminated soil, food and water, and environmental prions can persist. CDC has not documented a human infection, but it has not declared human exposure risk impossible. Treat unusual or dead animals as a wildlife-health concern, follow local rules, use protective handling practices and test harvested deer or elk before eating whenever the responsible authorities recommend it.
