The American bulldog needed medical recovery, carefully managed introductions, focused training and a person willing to let trust develop slowly. A 2016 Best Friends Animal Society profile described a playful, three-year-old dog who could be charming one-on-one but became anxious around men and in crowded settings with other animals.
This is a historical account of that profile, not a current adoption listing. The story does not establish whether Churchill is alive, available, in foster care or still connected with Best Friends. Anyone seeking information about him must confirm it directly with the organization.

Who Churchill was in the 2016 profile
Christina Green’s February 18, 2016 feature, “A second chance for an American bulldog,” followed Churchill after he arrived at Best Friends–New York from Animal Care Centers of NYC. The article said his earlier life was a mystery, including what might have caused his anxiety around men. That missing history mattered because the rescue team had to respond to the dog in front of them rather than rely on a known explanation for his behavior.

Why his medical recovery came first
Churchill arrived severely anemic. The article did not identify the cause, so it would be misleading to assign one. It did report that he recovered after a long period of care with a local veterinarian. This was not a quick behavioral makeover: the rescue had to address a serious physical condition before concentrating on his prospects for adoption.
For a reader considering Churchill years later, the practical implication is to request an up-to-date veterinary record rather than assume that the old anemia has either continued or disappeared without follow-up. The 2016 account establishes recovery at that time, but it does not provide later bloodwork, diagnoses, medication history or a current health assessment.
What the article does and does not establish
- It establishes that severe anemia was present when Churchill entered care.
- It establishes that a local veterinarian provided a long period of care and that the article described him as recovered.
- It does not establish the underlying cause of the anemia.
- It does not provide a current diagnosis, treatment plan, prognosis or life expectancy.
That distinction protects both Churchill and a prospective home. A responsible inquiry would ask Best Friends or the current caregiver which medical records are available now, whether any monitoring is recommended and whether later health information supersedes the historical description.
What made everyday settings difficult
Churchill’s behavior changed with context. The article described him as a dog who could be charming in a one-on-one interaction but anxious when many people and other animals were present. The profile also focused on anxiety around men, while acknowledging that his earlier experiences were unknown.

Shannon Kirkman, identified as Best Friends–New York’s mobile adoptions coordinator, captured the contrast in the profile: “Churchill is a doll, an absolute doll,” she said. She immediately qualified that affection with, “But he was definitely anxious.” Her comments present two traits that need to be held together. Churchill was not reduced to his fear, and his friendliness did not erase the situations that overwhelmed him.
Kirkman also said, “He’s just funny to watch,” a description of his personality rather than a claim that anxiety was trivial. A dog can be entertaining and affectionate while still needing a carefully paced environment. The article offers no evidence that Churchill’s reactions were caused by the breed, nor does it provide a formal behavioral diagnosis.
The setting mattered as much as the dog
Large adoption events can combine the exact triggers identified in Churchill’s profile: unfamiliar people, male visitors, other animals and constant movement. The team’s response was not to declare him unsuitable for adoption. Instead, it planned to bring him to smaller weekend mobile adoption events, where introductions could be less crowded.
That plan illustrates a central point in the story: changing the presentation environment can give a dog a fairer opportunity to show his normal personality. It does not prove that every quiet setting would solve Churchill’s anxiety, and it does not guarantee that a future home would be stress-free. It does show that the rescue was matching the adoption process to the individual dog.

The two-week training program and what changed
Best Friends enrolled Churchill in a two-week total-immersion dog training program focused on his challenges. Kirkman described the intervention plainly: “Churchill went into a two-week total immersion dog training program.” The article reported that, afterward, he befriended male volunteers.
That development was meaningful but limited. The profile still said that building trust with most men took patience. In other words, the program created progress, not an instant guarantee. Churchill’s ability to form relationships with some male volunteers did not mean that every unfamiliar man would be comfortable immediately.
How to read the training result
- Progress: Churchill was able to befriend male volunteers after the program.
- Continuing need: Trust with most men still required patience.
- Scope: The article describes one dog’s response, not a universal training timetable.
- Unknowns: It does not publish the program’s exercises, trainer credentials, follow-up duration or later behavior.
The account therefore supports a measured expectation. Training can help Churchill build workable relationships, while the people around him still need to notice his comfort level and avoid rushing introductions. The article does not justify promising that two weeks would resolve anxiety for another dog, or even that the same result would persist unchanged for Churchill.

What kind of home the team was seeking
At the time of publication, the adoption team said a patient family or foster home could give Churchill time to become comfortable. The team also planned to help the new family understand how to support him. The profile’s adoption invitation was therefore based on preparation and patience rather than a claim that Churchill required no special consideration.

Qualities implied by the profile
- Patience during introductions: Churchill might need extra time, especially with men.
- Ability to reduce pressure: A calmer introduction environment was favored over a crowded event.
- Willingness to work with the rescue: Best Friends planned to explain how to support him.
- Realistic expectations: His playful side and his anxiety could appear in different situations.
The article does not specify whether Churchill lived successfully with children, cats, other dogs in a home, or particular household routines. It also does not state whether he needed a particular type of housing, yard or schedule. Those are not details to infer from the profile; they are questions a current caregiver would have to answer.
Why fostering was part of the solution
A foster placement was presented as one possible route to giving Churchill time to become comfortable. In a foster setting, the rescue could potentially learn more about his behavior outside an event, but the 2016 story does not report a foster outcome or define the length of any placement. Anyone considering fostering now should ask what support, veterinary coverage, behavior guidance and transition plan are currently offered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using rewards without overstating the evidence
The profile said treats could help encourage Churchill after he settled. That is the only product-related detail in the account. It supports the limited idea of using small, soft dog-training treats as an optional reward once a dog is calm enough to engage; it does not identify a brand, ingredient, quantity or tested product.
Recommended Free Tools
Because Churchill had a serious anemia history, a current caregiver should approve any diet or treat plan with a veterinarian. The article does not connect treats to his anemia, and it does not establish that treats would produce the same response in every anxious dog. Rewards were one tool mentioned in his story, not a substitute for medical care, a behavior plan or a low-pressure introduction.

How a prospective adopter should verify the story today
The article is dated 2016, so its adoption invitation cannot be treated as current. Before making travel plans, submitting an application or telling a child that Churchill is available, confirm his status directly with Best Friends or the organization currently responsible for him.
- Ask whether Churchill can be identified in current records. Use his name and the historical transfer from Animal Care Centers of NYC, while recognizing that records or placements may have changed.
- Confirm availability. The 2016 article does not say whether he is currently adoptable, in foster care, adopted or deceased.
- Request current medical information. Ask what is known about the previous anemia, whether he has had later examinations and whether any ongoing monitoring is advised.
- Request recent behavior observations. Ask specifically about interactions with men, unfamiliar visitors, dogs and crowded environments rather than relying only on the old description.
- Ask how introductions are managed. Find out whether meetings occur privately, whether multiple visits are expected and what signals indicate that Churchill needs more space.
- Clarify support after placement. Confirm which adoption-team contacts, training guidance and veterinary resources are available if the transition is difficult.
- Discuss foster-to-adopt options if offered. Get the arrangement, decision timeline and responsibilities in writing before agreeing.
What Churchill’s story says about second chances
Churchill’s profile is not a simple before-and-after rescue story. He arrived with a serious but unexplained medical condition, recovered through extended veterinary care, and then entered a training program aimed at specific anxieties. He made observable progress with male volunteers, yet still needed patience. The rescue adjusted the adoption setting and looked for people prepared to support the dog behind the charming one-on-one moments.
The most important lesson is individualization. Churchill was neither defined solely by his anxiety nor presented as effortlessly easy. His second chance involved asking where he could succeed, how quickly trust should develop and what information a future home would need. Since the article does not establish his later life, the respectful way to carry the story forward is to preserve that same care: treat the historical account as context, and verify every current detail with the people who know his present situation.
