The City of Belmont defended its mosquito-control work in February 2025 after residents complained of soaring numbers and City of Bayswater deputy mayor Elli Petersen-Pik called for a more consistent regional approach. At the time, Belmont said it was treating two named sites at least twice a week and had added staff to respond to problem areas. Those are historical, attributed statements—not confirmation of the City’s current schedule or proof that either council’s program was more effective.
What Belmont said it was doing
In a report published on 12 February 2025, PerthNow quoted City of Belmont CEO John Christie saying Black Swan Island and the Belmont side of Garratt Road Bridge were treated at least twice a week with targeted larvicide, intended to stop mosquito larvae from emerging as adults. The report also said Belmont had added staff resources and sent staff out daily to treat areas of concern. These details describe the approach reported at that time; mosquito activity and council schedules can change.

Christie said Belmont was in regular communication with the City of Bayswater, WA Health and neighboring councils, but had not contracted Bayswater to treat Belmont sites. The statements were the City’s account of its work, not an independent assessment of treatment results.

PerthNow’s February 2025 account described different coverage and schedules. It did not provide comparable mosquito counts or outcome data, so the differences do not show which approach worked better.
#1 Best Overall
- BACKYARD MOSQUITO PROTECTION: Use the mosquito killer outdoors on the ground in a level shaded location near bushes, trees, or other secluded areas of your yard for lasting defense that keeps working and reduces the amount of mosquitoes over time
- OUTDOOR MOSQUITO CONTROL: Stops the breeding cycle at its source by using technology backed by scientific research to mimic natural mosquito breeding sites to lure mosquitoes in through a contained and targeted approach (Aedes and Culex spp)
- KILL & PREVENT: Kill adult mosquitoes in 9 days and their larvae in the station and other places they lay eggs, preventing new mosquitoes from developing; provides more comprehensive control than traps, repellents, or repellers (Aedes and Culex spp)
- HASSLE-FREE AND EASY TO USE: Quiet and effective mosquito control without flames, sprays, or batteries - just set-up per directions using a refill band and water, replace the band every 30 days, and check water level periodically to refill as needed
- LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)
| Reported factor | City of Belmont | City of Bayswater |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Black Swan Island and the Belmont side of Garratt Road Bridge were named treatment areas. | A river-corridor program from Bassendean to Nedlands; the report said it did not include Belmont. |
| Cadence | At least twice a week at the two named sites, according to Belmont CEO John Christie as quoted by PerthNow on 12 February 2025. | Weekly, according to PerthNow’s 12 February 2025 report. |
| Method and staffing | Targeted larvicide and additional staff, with staff reportedly sent daily to areas of concern, according to the report. | Not stated in PerthNow’s report. |
| Coordination | Belmont said it regularly communicated with Bayswater, WA Health and neighboring councils. | Deputy mayor Elli Petersen-Pik called for a more consistent regional approach. |
There is no like-for-like evaluation in the cited reporting: it gives no trap counts, costs, or measured results for either council’s work. A more frequent treatment schedule alone is not evidence of greater effectiveness.
What residents reported—and what the claims establish
Residents’ online comments included descriptions of mosquito numbers as the worst they had seen in 25 years, concern about disease, and calls for councils to look at what other councils were doing. These are reported personal accounts, not a measured citywide count or a resident survey. The available figures do not establish how mosquito numbers changed across Belmont or whether a local outbreak was occurring.

What the health information says about local risk
On 28 February 2025, WA Health reported that Ross River virus had been detected in mosquitoes collected at Crawley through surveillance. The agency associated increased mosquito activity with persistently high tides and warmer weather. This is regional context; it does not show that mosquitoes at Black Swan Island, Garratt Road Bridge or elsewhere in Belmont carried the virus.

- Controls Mosquito Populations: Prevents larvae from maturing so no biting mosquitoes emerge, keeping your backyard, patio, and garden mosquito free
- Quick and Simple Setup: Just add water to activate and place in a shady area under bushes or trees for safe and hassle free outdoor mosquito prevention
- Breaks Mosquito Life Cycle: Attracts female mosquitoes to lay eggs inside the trap where larvae are eliminated, stopping future generations before they bite
- Family friendly design: Safe around kids and pets with a flat bottom for ground use or a hanging loop for trees, offering flexible placement outdoors
- Effective long term protection: Each mosquito killer trap provides up to 1500 sq ft of coverage, delivering reliable and eco friendly mosquito control for yards, porches, and patios
WA Health lists possible Ross River virus symptoms including painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rashes, fever, fatigue and headaches, which may last weeks to months. A specific blood test through a GP is needed for diagnosis. If you are concerned about symptoms, contact a GP rather than trying to diagnose an illness from a bite or local mosquito report.
What residents can do around homes and pets
Belmont and WA Health advise personal precautions because council programs cannot control every mosquito. Start by removing standing water where mosquitoes may breed, then reduce the chance of bites indoors and outside.

- EFFICIENT INSECT LURE: Each lure in our mosquito killer outdoor trap has a whisper-quiet fan that sucks them into the basket
- WIDE COVERAGE AREA: Protects up to ½ acre, great for backyard mosquito control; ensure proper placement 3-6 ft. off the ground and 20-40 ft away from areas of enjoyment to efficiently draw insects away from family relaxation areas
- Empty or fill pot-plant drip trays with sand weekly; remove other standing water around the property.
- Keep pools chlorinated, filtered and clean, and clean pet bowls weekly.
- Maintain window and door screens; cover rainwater-tank openings with flywire.
- Trim dense foliage around the home.
- Wear light-coloured, loose clothing. Use a topical repellent containing DEET, picaridin or PMD/OLE according to its label; Belmont also advises applying repellent to exposed skin.
- Use mosquito nets when sleeping outdoors.
These steps can reduce breeding opportunities or exposure at home, but they do not replace local-government mosquito management.
Where to check for current treatment information
The treatment cadence reported in February 2025 should not be assumed to remain in place. Belmont says it regularly treats tidal flood plains and wetlands during warmer months and works with neighboring local governments and WA Health to coordinate management. For current site-specific treatment information, contact the City of Belmont directly.
