The 2024 headline that Perth Zoo’s elephants would stay another year described a delay in the original transfer plan, not their current status. Permai moved to Monarto Safari Park in January 2025, and Putra Mas later joined her there; Perth Zoo says his arrival completed the herd and the zoo is no longer home to elephants. Musth and hot-weather transport were cited for the original schedule change, while later hold-ups also involved work at Monarto and introductions among the female elephants.
Why did Perth Zoo’s elephant transfer get delayed?
The 2024 change to the schedule
On 20 May 2024, Perth Zoo said the move was more likely to happen in mid-to-late 2025. A zoo spokeswoman told PerthNow that Putra Mas could not be moved during musth, a recurring period that he typically experienced from summer through April or May. The zoo also planned to avoid transporting the elephants in hotter months. Those were the stated reasons for the 2024 forecast; they do not account for every later change.

Further delays in 2025
By July 2025, Putra Mas had not left during the planned June–July window. The ABC reported that Monarto was managing introductions among four female elephants and completing habitat work needed before his arrival. At the time, Perth Zoo expected him to move by the end of the year. The zoo’s Acting Director of Life Sciences, John Lemon, described the timetable as “elephant time.”

| Elephant | Transfer timing | What Perth Zoo reports |
|---|---|---|
| Permai | January 2025 | She arrived at Monarto first. Perth Zoo’s current elephant-era page gives the month, but not a specific day. |
| Putra Mas | 5 November; year not explicit on Perth Zoo’s current page | He arrived after a 42.5-hour road journey, according to the same Perth Zoo page. The date’s year is not printed there, so it should not be inferred from that page alone. |
Perth Zoo says Putra Mas’s arrival completed the Monarto elephant herd and that Perth Zoo is no longer home to elephants. The original 2024 headline is therefore a snapshot of a forecast that subsequently changed, not a description of the present-day location of the animals.

Why did Permai move before Putra Mas?
Perth Zoo’s stated rationale was that Permai needed the company of other female elephants after the death of matriarch Tricia, and that the zoo’s inner-city site did not have room for a functioning herd. The zoo described Monarto’s purpose-built habitat as suitable for the regional herd. These are Perth Zoo’s reasons for the relocation, rather than an independent welfare assessment.
In its 13 December 2024 update, Perth Zoo said Permai could move in late January 2025, while Putra Mas would remain in Perth until after musth. Acting Director of Life Sciences John Lemon said, “Female elephants need the company of other female elephants, and we want that for Permai as soon as possible.”

How were the elephants prepared for transport?
Perth Zoo said crate training and tethering formed part of safe transport preparation. In its December 2024 update, the zoo reported that Permai’s crate training was going well and that two senior veterinarians and two elephant carers would monitor her during the road journey. Her custom-built crate was described as insulated and air-conditioned, fitted with cameras, and able to hold 1,000 litres of water. Perth Zoo’s later account confirms that custom-built crates were used; it gives Putra Mas’s road journey as 42.5 hours, without explicitly stating the year of his arrival on that page.

Perth Zoo announced its plan to rehome its elephants in 2018, following the eventual passing of Tricia. The move unfolded over several years rather than as a single transfer: Permai went first, and Putra Mas followed after his musth period and Monarto’s preparations.
