Clownfish eggs usually hatch in about six to eight days, but temperature and rearing conditions shift the timetable. Published observations found hatching after eight days at 23°C, seven days at 26°C, and six days at 29°C. Those figures describe particular Amphiprion ocellaris studies, not a guaranteed schedule for every aquarium.
After hatching, larvae need very small live prey—especially rotifers in the cited clownfish work. A homemade mixture containing squid, mussels, shrimp, pellets and nori belongs to a published broodstock-feeding protocol, not a confirmed first food for larvae. Keeping those two life stages separate is the most important practical point in this topic.

How long do clownfish eggs take to hatch?
The embryonic period is generally about six to eight days. Temperature is one reason the interval changes, and species, parental condition, egg quality and aquarium conditions can add further variation. Use the calendar as an estimate, then check the eggs themselves for developmental signs.
Published hatch intervals
| Source conditions | Reported interval | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| A. ocellaris, 23°C, Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute study (2007) | Eight days | A study observation under its stated conditions |
| A. ocellaris, 26°C, embryonic-development study (2021) | Seven days from fertilization to hatching | Observed in the authors’ aquarium conditions |
| A. ocellaris, 29°C, Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute study (2007) | Six days | A study observation, not a universal target temperature |
| Published staging and life-history review (2019) | Approximately six to eight days | Useful general range when the exact conditions are unknown |
Do not average these numbers into a precise “day 6.9” rule. A tank held near one temperature may still hatch earlier or later than a study because the studies used different systems and methods. Avoid changing temperature simply to force a particular hatch date unless a qualified aquaculture professional has designed that procedure for your system.

What happens before hatching?
Clownfish are benthic spawners. The adhesive eggs are attached to a firm surface near the host-anemone habitat rather than floating freely through the water column. In the documented A. ocellaris study, the male provided parental care after spawning. That care can include tending the clutch, so sudden changes around the spawning site may affect normal behavior even though the papers do not establish a single home-aquarium intervention.
The embryo develops inside each attached egg until it can hatch and begin feeding externally. A calendar tells you when to watch more closely; it cannot prove that every embryo is at the same stage. Eggs from one clutch may develop unevenly, and a few unhatched eggs do not automatically mean the entire clutch has failed.
Clownfish development after hatching
Newly hatched larvae are tiny, free-swimming animals with no visible white stripes in the earliest stage described by the staging work. Their appearance changes quickly, but the exact day of each change varies among individuals and conditions.

Visible milestones in A. ocellaris
| Approximate time | Observed feature | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Hatch through the early larval period | No visible white stripes | Normal early appearance in the cited staging observations |
| About nine days post-hatch | Orange pigmentation begins to spread | An approximate stage marker, not a deadline |
| About nine to fourteen days post-hatch | Head and body stripes begin appearing | Stripe onset spans several days in the study |
| About seventeen days post-hatch or later | The third stripe appears | Timing can be later; do not use one day as a pass/fail test |
| Metamorphosis | Three white stripes are acquired and behavior shifts toward swimming nearer substrates | The staging study’s developmental definition for A. ocellaris |
Orange color and stripes are useful observations, but they should be read together with body size, swimming behavior and feeding response. A larva that has not striped on the calendar date you expected is not necessarily abnormal.
Why size can be more useful than age
One published A. ocellaris staging study found standard length to be a better proxy for developmental progress than age alone, while also acknowledging individual variability. In practical terms, record hatch date, measure or estimate size when possible, and note visible structures rather than assigning every larva to a stage by day number alone. This approach is especially helpful when a clutch hatches over more than one night or when temperature differs from the published studies.
What food should I start with after hatching?
Start with suitably sized live prey. Rotifers are identified as initial food in the cited clownfish sources, and captive-rearing methods also describe copepods, microalgae and other zooplankton culture. The correct prey is the one the larvae can capture and swallow; prey size must be considered relative to the larvae’s mouth size.

Rotifers as an initial prey
Rotifers are the clearest first-food example in the available clownfish literature. In the 2007 A. ocellaris study, larvae first received rotifers. That study also used microalgae in its rearing context and introduced a pellet diet later. These details describe that protocol; they do not prove that every larval batch will follow the same feed transition or thrive on the same schedule.

ICAR-CIARI describes feeding larvae rotifers or copepods according to mouth size and places microalgal and zooplankton culture within live-feed production. Microalgae may support a live-feed system, but their presence in a culture system does not make a jar of algae a substitute for appropriately sized prey. Match the feed to larval size and to the rearing method you can maintain consistently.
Why ordinary fish food is not a first answer
Newly hatched larvae are too small for many dry foods, and the cited sources emphasize live prey at the beginning. A later pellet introduction in one study should not be interpreted as permission to replace the initial live-food phase with flakes or pellets on hatch night. If you cannot maintain a suitable live-food culture, the limiting factor is preparation before spawning, not a last-minute homemade substitute.

The DIY food project: what it is actually for
A 2021 captive-rearing methods paper describes a homemade mixture made from squid, mussels, shrimp, pellets and nori. In that publication, the mixture is a broodstock diet: food for the adult breeding fish. It is not a validated first food for newly hatched larvae.
Broodstock diet ingredients named in the protocol
- Squid: one of the animal-protein ingredients in the published mixture.
- Mussels: another seafood component of the adult diet.
- Shrimp: included as a further marine-protein source.
- Pellets: the prepared-food component specified by the protocol.
- Nori: the seaweed ingredient included in the mixture.
The paper’s ingredient list does not establish a universal ratio, preparation method or feeding frequency for every home aquarium. Treat it as a documented example to discuss with an aquaculture professional, not as a guaranteed recipe. Adult nutrition can influence spawning condition, but that does not make the same blended food physically suitable for larval mouths.
Keep the two feeding jobs separate
| Life stage | Food category supported by the sources | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Broodstock (adult breeding fish) | Published homemade mixture of squid, mussels, shrimp, pellets and nori | One universal recipe, ratio or feeding schedule |
| Newly hatched larvae | Suitably sized live prey, especially rotifers; copepods are also described according to mouth size | That the broodstock mixture or any dry food is an appropriate first feed |
| Later larval rearing | Live-feed culture including microalgae and zooplankton; one study added pellets later | A single transition day or diet sequence for all species and systems |
Planning a hatch without confusing the calendar
Preparation should be complete before the expected hatch window. The studies show why: a clutch may hatch around day six, seven or eight depending on conditions, while larvae need food immediately after they begin feeding externally.

- Record the spawn date and temperature. Note the species, tank temperature and the time the eggs were laid. This gives you a reference without pretending it is a guarantee.
- Watch the clutch daily. Look for changes in the embryos and for the male’s normal care behavior. Avoid interpreting one visual feature as proof that every egg is at the same stage.
- Have live food ready before the earliest plausible hatch. For the cited range, that means preparing rotifers or another appropriately sized live prey source before day six when conditions could produce an early hatch.
- Check prey size against larval mouth size. Rotifers are a documented starting point, while copepods may be suitable when their size matches the larvae.
- Observe feeding and development together. Record whether larvae are capturing prey, their approximate size, pigmentation and swimming position.
- Adjust expectations from observations, not a rigid age chart. Standard length and visible structures can reveal progress more reliably than age alone.
Common interpretation errors
“The eggs are late, so the clutch is dead.”
Not necessarily. The published range is six to eight days, and those values came from different temperatures and study conditions. Confirm the actual temperature and continue observing the embryos before deciding that a clutch has failed.
“A warmer tank always means a better or safer hatch.”
The studies show a shorter interval at 29°C than at 23°C, but they do not establish an ideal temperature for every home system or prove that speeding development improves survival. Treat temperature as a condition to control consistently, not a dial to turn for a target date.
“No stripes at day nine means something is wrong.”
The staging observations place orange pigmentation around day nine, head and body stripes across roughly days nine to fourteen, and the third stripe around day seventeen or later. These are approximate markers with individual variation. Use several signs, including size and behavior, rather than a single stripe deadline.

That repurposes a broodstock protocol without evidence that it meets larval nutritional or physical needs. The cited larval methods begin with live prey, especially rotifers, because prey size matters at first feeding.
Spawning numbers: useful context, not a promise
The 2007 Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute study recorded 300 to 1,000 eggs per spawning and a 10- to 19-day spawning interval for the observed pair. Those figures describe one pair under that study’s conditions. They are useful for understanding why a breeder may have several developmental batches at once, but they are not species-wide guarantees for clutch size or spawning frequency.
A practical evidence-based checklist
- Identify the fish as accurately as possible; the detailed timing figures concern Amphiprion ocellaris.
- Write down spawn date and temperature rather than relying on memory.
- Use six to eight days as a planning window, not a fixed hatch appointment.
- Keep the male’s parental-care behavior and the adhesive egg substrate in mind when observing the clutch.
- Culture or obtain suitably sized live prey before hatching; rotifers are the best-supported initial example in these sources.
- Keep the squid-mussel-shrimp-pellet-nori mixture labeled as broodstock food.
- Track standard length, pigmentation, stripes and behavior alongside age.
- Describe any feeding transition as a system-specific choice, because the sources do not establish one schedule for every clownfish species or aquarium.
The reliable takeaway is straightforward: expect a roughly six-to-eight-day embryonic period, prepare live prey before that window opens, and judge post-hatch progress by size and visible development rather than by age alone. The published homemade mixture can inform adult broodstock feeding, but it should not be presented as a first meal for clownfish larvae.
