How to Choose the Right Cat Litter for Your Cat and Home

Unscented, fine-textured litter is a sensible starting point for many cats, but the right choice depends on your cat’s preferences, box access, and your cleaning routine.

For many cats, an unscented, fine-textured or sandy litter is a sensible place to start—but there is no single best litter for every cat. Your cat’s comfort, the box’s size and accessibility, and the cleaning routine all matter. If your cat already uses a litter reliably, avoid switching abruptly; if litter-box problems persist, a product change alone may not address the cause.

How do I choose the right cat litter?

Start with what your cat is likely to accept, then let their behavior guide the choice. Cornell’s guidance says most cats prefer unscented, fine-textured litter; International Cat Care also recommends unscented, sandy litter in its urinary-tract care guide. These are useful starting points, not guarantees: individual cats can prefer different textures or reject a litter they previously used.

When comparing options, consider the factors you can observe and manage:

  • Texture: Fine or sandy litter is a reasonable first choice. For a kitten, consider starting with the litter they already know.
  • Fragrance: Choose unscented as the safer default for acceptance. Added scent may appeal to people, but it is not a reliable way to make a litter more acceptable to a cat.
  • Clumping and upkeep: Clumping litter forms clumps that can be removed during daily scooping. The cited guidance does not establish that clumping is best for every cat or household.
  • Dust: Dust may be a concern if respiratory irritation is an issue at home. Cornell lists dusty litter among suspected asthma irritants, but does not rank litter types or brands by measured dust or establish a litter as asthma treatment.
  • Depth: Cornell suggests about one to two inches of litter; International Cat Care gives around 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) in its tray-setup guidance. Treat these as practical starting points and watch what your cat uses comfortably.
  • Household routine: Consider how often you can scoop and replace litter, along with storage, tracking, and disposal. The available guidance does not provide comparative tests for cost, tracking, odor control, or environmental impact.

There are no product-comparison results here that establish a winning brand or material. Let your cat’s acceptance and your ability to maintain a clean, accessible box decide among suitable options.

Is unscented litter better for cats?

Unscented litter is a sensible default because Cornell says most cats prefer it, and International Cat Care discourages scented litter and deodorisers in its cited guidance. A scented product may mask odor for people, but the cited sources do not establish that fragrance improves a cat’s experience or solves litter-box odor problems. If your cat avoids a scented litter, switch gradually to an unscented option rather than relying on stronger fragrance.

Is clumping or non-clumping cat litter better?

The cited guidance does not identify one type as better for every cat or household. A practical distinction is the cleaning routine: with clumping litter, Cornell advises removing clumps and feces daily. Choose an option your cat will use and that you can keep clean; do not assume that clumping alone will resolve avoidance or odor concerns.

How should I set up the litter box?

The box needs to be comfortable to enter, large enough for the cat, and kept accessible. A kitten or an older cat with arthritis may benefit from low sides. A larger cat may need a larger box, and some cats prefer an open box, though preferences vary.

Cornell recommends one litter box per cat plus one. In its care guidance, International Cat Care gives a litter depth of around 3–5 cm (1–2 inches); Cornell’s quick tips similarly suggest about one to two inches. These are setup recommendations, not a guarantee that every cat will prefer the same depth.

How should I change litter and keep the box clean?

  1. Keep a reliable routine if it is working. If your cat uses the current litter consistently, do not change it abruptly without a reason. For a new kitten, consider beginning with the familiar litter.
  2. Transition gradually when changing brands. Cornell recommends gradual brand transitions. Avoid a sudden switch when possible, and observe whether your cat continues to dig, cover, and use the box comfortably.
  3. Scoop daily when using clumping litter. Remove clumps and feces each day, as Cornell advises, and keep the box clean and accessible.
  4. Watch your cat’s response. If use becomes uncomfortable or your cat avoids the box, consider the litter, box size and entry, location, and possible competition or stress rather than repeatedly changing products without assessing the rest of the setup.

What should I do if my cat stops using the litter box?

Do not assume the litter itself is the cause. House-soiling can relate to a medical condition, an aversion to the box or litter, or a preference for a different surface or location. Cornell notes that urinary, kidney, thyroid, digestive, age-related, and other problems can interfere with normal elimination or make box access difficult.

If the problem persists, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than relying on repeated product changes alone. Urethral obstruction is a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention, according to Cornell. Dusty litter is also listed by Cornell among suspected asthma irritants, but the source does not establish that litter causes asthma in an individual cat or identify a specific litter as treatment.
