Cockapoo Dog Breed Guide

Cockapoos are affectionate Cocker Spaniel–Poodle crosses, but their size, coat, shedding, and temperament can vary widely. Here is what owners should know about grooming, training, exercise, health, and breeder screening.

Cockapoos combine the Cocker Spaniel’s sociable, cheerful nature with the Poodle’s intelligence and athleticism. They are often affectionate, trainable companion dogs, but they are not a predictable “designer package.” A Cockapoo’s adult size, coat, shedding, energy level, and health risks depend heavily on the individual parents—especially which Poodle variety was used.

This is a crossbreed, not an AKC-recognized purebred. That distinction matters when you compare puppies, evaluate breeder claims, and plan for grooming and veterinary care.

What is a Cockapoo?

A Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. The Poodle parent may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard, so the word “Cockapoo” covers dogs with a wide range of body sizes and activity levels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Toy Poodle parent generally produces the smallest Cockapoos. A Miniature Poodle parent tends to produce a small-to-medium dog, while a Standard Poodle parent can produce a considerably larger and more athletic dog. The parents, grandparents, sex, generation, and individual growth all affect the final result.

Some organizations use categories such as Toy, Mini, and Standard. The American Cockapoo Club, for example, describes Toy dogs as 10 inches or less at the shoulder, Minis as 11–14 inches, and Standards as 15 inches or more. These are not AKC breed classifications. Mixed-breed Cockapoos can participate in the AKC Canine Partners program, but they cannot receive full AKC purebred registration or compete in conformation as an AKC-recognized purebred.

Appearance and coat

Cockapoo coats may be loosely wavy, tightly curly, or comparatively straight. They can be solid or patterned, with colors including black, white, buff, cream, apricot, red, and chocolate. Some have a soft, spaniel-like coat; others have a denser Poodle-type coat; many fall somewhere between the two.

A puppy’s coat does not always predict its adult coat. A loosely wavy puppy may develop a denser curl as it matures, and a puppy that sheds very little may shed more noticeably later. Even within the same litter, coat texture and maintenance needs can differ.

Most Cockapoos shed less than many dogs, but there is no guaranteed low-shedding result. The cross is also not hypoallergenic. Allergens come mainly from dander, saliva, and other biological material, not just from visible hair. Anyone with allergies should spend extended indoor time with the specific dog before bringing it home.

How much grooming does a Cockapoo need?

Grooming is one of the biggest ongoing commitments. A longer or curlier coat can mat close to the skin, particularly behind the ears, in the armpits, around the collar, in the groin, and beneath the tail.

  1. Brush and comb all the way down to the skin two or three times each week.
  2. Check commonly missed areas for tight mats.
  3. Arrange professional clipping approximately every six weeks, or learn safe clipping techniques.
  4. Check the ears weekly and after bathing or swimming.
  5. Keep the eyes clear of hair and discharge.
  6. Trim nails regularly.
  7. Teach the puppy to accept brushes, dryers, clippers, nail handling, and ear checks gradually.

Never cut tight mats out with scissors. Matted hair can conceal sore or infected skin, and scissors can easily cut the dog. Severe matting may require a close shave by a professional groomer or veterinarian.

Cockapoo temperament

Cockapoos are often people-oriented, bright, playful, and eager to participate in household life. Many learn quickly and respond well to food, toys, praise, and short training sessions. Their Cocker Spaniel heritage may contribute sociability, retrieving interest, and enthusiasm; their Poodle heritage may contribute intelligence, sensitivity, activity, and problem-solving ability.

There is no single guaranteed Cockapoo temperament. Some are calm and adaptable, while others are excitable, vocal, distractible, or intensely attached to their owners. A friendly dog still needs supervision around children, particularly around food, toys, resting places, and handling.

Some Cockapoos struggle to settle when their exercise, enrichment, or training needs are overlooked. Persistent barking, destructive chewing, frantic attention-seeking, or an inability to relax may reflect under-stimulation or separation distress rather than “bad behavior.”

Exercise and mental stimulation

A Cockapoo needs daily activity, although the appropriate amount depends on age, size, health, and inherited drive. A long walk, jog, energetic game of fetch, or a combination of shorter activities can work well for an adult dog. A yard helps with convenience but does not replace walks, exploration, or interaction.

Useful activities include:

  • Brisk walks with opportunities to sniff.
  • Retrieving and tug games with clear start-and-finish cues.
  • Scent games and food puzzles.
  • Short obedience and trick-training sessions.
  • Swimming, where safe and supervised.
  • Agility or other non-impact sports once the dog is physically mature and cleared by a veterinarian.

Training is exercise for the brain as well as a way to improve manners. Several five-minute sessions are often more productive than one long, repetitive session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training a Cockapoo

Most Cockapoos do best with reward-based training. Use small treats, toys, and praise to reinforce behaviors you want, and keep sessions upbeat and brief. Sensitive, people-focused dogs can become fearful or withdrawn when training involves physical punishment or intimidation.

Prioritize:

  • Name recognition and recall.
  • Loose-leash walking.
  • Polite greetings and four paws on the floor.
  • Settling on a mat or bed.
  • “Leave it” and “drop it.”
  • Appropriate chewing and bite inhibition.
  • House-training.
  • Cooperative handling of ears, paws, eyes, and mouth.
  • Gradual alone-time training.

Socializing a Cockapoo puppy

The first three months are an important socialization period. Introduce the puppy gradually and positively to people, household sounds, surfaces, car travel, grooming equipment, veterinary handling, and stable, vaccinated dogs where appropriate.

Socialization does not mean forcing a puppy to greet everyone or exposing it to overwhelming situations. If the puppy freezes, hides, tries to escape, or refuses food, increase distance and lower the intensity. Flooding a frightened puppy can make fear worse.

Alone time and separation problems

Cockapoos can form strong attachments to their owners. Separation-related distress may appear as barking, whining, pacing, destruction, salivation, house-soiling, or refusing food when the dog is alone. It is not spite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teach independence from puppyhood:

  1. Start with brief absences while the dog is calm.
  2. Increase duration gradually rather than jumping from minutes to hours.
  3. Provide a safe resting area and suitable food-stuffed toys.
  4. Keep departures and returns calm.
  5. Use a camera to identify what happens after you leave.
  6. Seek veterinary or veterinary-behavior guidance if the dog panics, injures itself, or cannot tolerate even short absences.

Crating may help some dogs, but it is not a treatment for separation anxiety and can worsen distress if introduced carelessly.

Ear care

Hanging, hairy ears can reduce airflow and trap moisture. Check the ears weekly and after bathing or swimming. Head shaking, scratching, odor, redness, pain, discharge, swelling, or reduced hearing warrants veterinary attention.

Do not put cotton swabs deep into the ear canal. Use only a cleaner and technique recommended by your veterinarian. Excessive ear-canal hair should not automatically be plucked; unnecessary plucking can irritate the canal. Keeping the ears appropriately dry and treating allergies or other underlying problems is often more important than removing every hair.

Health concerns

Cockapoos can inherit health risks from either parent breed. Being a crossbreed does not remove inherited disease, and “hybrid vigor” is not a replacement for health screening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potential concerns include:

  • Hip dysplasia.
  • Patellar luxation.
  • Eye disease, including progressive retinal atrophy in relevant lines.
  • Recurrent ear disease.
  • Obesity.
  • Dental disease, especially in smaller dogs.
  • Seizure and other neurological disorders in some lines.
  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus and other Standard Poodle-associated risks when a Standard Poodle is used.

These are risk categories, not a diagnosis or prediction for every Cockapoo.

Health testing to request

There is no Cockapoo-specific AKC parent-club testing protocol. Ask about the actual Cocker Spaniel and Poodle varieties used.

Parent Useful screening to discuss
American Cocker Spaniel Hip evaluation and an examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist, generally within 12 months before breeding
Miniature Poodle Patella, hip, and ophthalmologist evaluations, plus PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA testing
Toy Poodle Patella and ophthalmologist evaluations, plus PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA testing
Standard Poodle Hip and ophthalmologist evaluations, plus testing or clear-by-parentage for NEwS, autoimmune thyroiditis evaluation, and von Willebrand disease I DNA testing

Ask for the registered names of both parents and verify results through an appropriate public database or testing organization. A CHIC number confirms that required tests were completed and made public at that time; it does not mean every result was normal or guarantee a healthy puppy.

“Vet checked,” “healthy parents,” and “DNA tested” are not enough. The breeder should identify the exact examinations and tests and show you the records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Feeding and weight control

Cockapoos can be highly food-motivated and prone to excess weight. Feed a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, size, activity, and medical needs. Measure meals instead of free-feeding by default, and monitor body condition as well as the number on the scale.

Treats, chews, and table scraps count toward daily calories. Keeping treats below about 10% of daily calorie needs is a useful general rule. Ask your veterinarian to calculate calories if a puppy’s growth, an adult dog’s weight, or a medical condition is difficult to manage.

Can Cockapoos live in apartments?

Yes, provided the owner can meet the dog’s needs. Apartment suitability depends less on square footage than on exercise, noise, grooming access, and alone-time skills. Persistent barking can create problems in shared buildings, and a yard is not a substitute for walks.

Before choosing a puppy, consider whether you can provide daily outdoor activity, manage elevators and shared hallways, arrange regular grooming, and teach the dog to remain calm when left alone.

Choosing a breeder or rescue

A responsible breeder should let you meet the mother and see where the puppies are raised when feasible. They should provide verifiable parent health results, veterinary and vaccination records, a written contract, information about temperament, and a clear return or rehoming policy. They should also ask you detailed questions about your lifestyle rather than focusing only on taking a deposit.

Be cautious if a seller:

  • Guarantees an exact adult size, coat, or allergy outcome.
  • Refuses to show health documentation.
  • Uses “teacup” or “hypoallergenic” as a major selling point.
  • Will not discuss inherited disease or previous offspring.
  • Pressures you to pay immediately.
  • Will not take the dog back if you can no longer care for it.

Terms such as F1, F1b, multigenerational, teddy-bear, merle, and allergy-friendly describe marketing, ancestry, appearance, or a coat claim—not guaranteed health or temperament. “Teacup” is not an official AKC size designation.

Rescue dogs listed as Cockapoos may be identified by appearance or surrender history rather than verified parentage. For an adopted adult, observed behavior, medical records, grooming needs, and compatibility with your household are more useful than the label alone.

Is a Cockapoo right for you?

A Cockapoo may be a good match if you want an affectionate, interactive dog and can commit to daily activity, reward-based training, regular brushing, professional grooming, ear care, weight control, and veterinary expenses for the next 12–15 years.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It may be a poor match if you need a dog that can regularly spend long periods alone, want a guaranteed non-shedding coat, dislike grooming appointments, or cannot accommodate an uncertain adult size and temperament.

FAQ

Are Cockapoos hypoallergenic?

No. Some Cockapoos may shed less than other dogs, but no Cockapoo is guaranteed hypoallergenic or allergy-safe. People with allergies should spend extended indoor time with the individual dog before making a decision.

How big does a Cockapoo get?

Size varies because the Poodle parent may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard. Common club guidelines describe Toy Cockapoos as 10 inches or less, Minis as 11–14 inches, and Standards as 15 inches or more at the shoulder. These categories are not a universal official breed standard.

How often should a Cockapoo be groomed?

Brush and comb the coat two to three times weekly, checking down to the skin for mats. Many Cockapoos need professional clipping about every six weeks, although coat length and texture may require a different schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Cockapoos shed?

They often shed below average, but shedding is not consistent across the cross. Coat type, generation, and individual genetics all matter, and some Cockapoos shed noticeably.

Are Cockapoos good family dogs?

Many are sociable, affectionate, and responsive to training, but no breed label guarantees temperament. Children should always be supervised with a dog, and the dog needs appropriate exercise, training, quiet space, and respectful handling.

What health tests should Cockapoo parents have?

Testing should reflect both parent breeds and the specific Poodle variety. Depending on the parents, ask about hip, patella, and eye evaluations and relevant DNA tests such as PRCD/PRA-prcd, NEwS, and von Willebrand disease I. Request verifiable records rather than accepting a general claim that the parents are healthy.

The Bottom Line

Cockapoos can be charming, clever companions, but they are not maintenance-free or fully predictable. Expect variation in size, coat, shedding, and behavior; plan for frequent grooming and daily interaction; teach alone time early; and investigate the health records of both parents. The best choice is based on the individual dog and the quality of its breeding or rescue support—not on promises of a guaranteed “teddy bear” appearance or allergy-free coat.
