For most households, cockatoos are not good pets. They can become deeply rewarding companions for a small number of experienced caretakers who can provide decades of daily social contact, supervised out-of-cage activity, flight and climbing space, enrichment, specialist veterinary care, and a permanent contingency plan. Their intelligence and affection do not make those requirements optional. WWF describes sulfur-crested and umbrella cockatoo care, diet, and housing as extremely difficult to meet over a lifetime, while the ASPCA says it does not recommend keeping large parrots unless appropriate care can be provided.
Why the answer is usually no
A cockatoo is not a low-maintenance companion that can be made content with a large cage and occasional handling. It is a highly social, long-lived parrot whose welfare depends on a daily pattern of interaction, exercise, mental challenges, safe housing, suitable food, and medical care. Missing one of those areas repeatedly can lead to chronic stress, screaming, aggression, obesity, injury or feather-destructive behavior.

Suitability depends on the species and individual bird, your available time and space, noise tolerance, experience, access to an avian veterinarian, local law, and what happens if your job, health, housing or family changes. A bird that fits one carefully prepared household may be entirely unsuitable for another.

The commitment can last most of a human lifetime
Lifespan figures differ by species and source, so no single number applies to every cockatoo. WWF lists sulfur-crested cockatoos at an average of 65 years and up to 120 years in captivity (WWF sulfur-crested assessment). Its umbrella cockatoo assessment reports up to 70 years in captivity (WWF umbrella assessment). VCA Animal Hospitals gives a general range of 25–45 years and says 70–80 years is possible for larger species (VCA general information).
That means acquiring a young bird can create responsibilities across retirement, moves, changing relationships and possible incapacity. Before bringing one home, identify a person or organization able to take over care, document the bird’s diet and medical history, and set aside funds for housing and veterinary treatment. A promise to “find someone later” is not a plan for an animal that may outlive you.
What a cockatoo needs every day
Hours of social contact and supervised freedom
WWF says sulfur-crested and umbrella cockatoos need hours of stimulation and social time outside the cage each day. ASPCA’s large-parrot guidance includes companionship, social and mental stimulation, flight, climbing and exercise as core needs (ASPCA position statement). The bird must be part of a reliable daily routine, not an ornament in a room where people are occasionally present.
Recommended Free Tools
Out-of-cage time must be supervised. Windows, doors, ceiling fans, electrical cords, toxic fumes, other pets and unsafe plants can turn free flight into an emergency. If you work long shifts, travel frequently or cannot provide backup care during illness, the schedule may be unrealistic.

Flight, climbing and safe space
A cage is a sleeping and safety area, not a substitute for exercise. WWF describes an ideal setting for sulfur-crested cockatoos as a large aviary with flight space and multiple individuals. In a home, that translates into a genuinely bird-safe room or aviary, sturdy varied-diameter perches, room to climb and stretch, and daily opportunities to fly under supervision.
Rotating enrichment
WWF calls for rotating toys, puzzles and perches. Foraging toys can make a useful enrichment category, but no toy replaces companionship, exercise, flight space, a suitable diet or veterinary care. Rotate materials and difficulty, inspect toys for loose fibers, sharp edges or ingestible parts, and remove anything the bird damages dangerously. Enrichment should encourage exploration and natural feeding behavior rather than simply provide noise-making objects.
Diet and preventive medicine
Diet needs to be appropriate for the individual bird and confirmed with an avian veterinarian; VCA recommends veterinary diet advice and annual routine health checkups. Regular examinations can identify weight, nutrition, respiratory, beak, feather and other problems before they become obvious. Locate a veterinarian who routinely treats birds before acquisition, not after the first emergency.
Noise is a suitability test, not a minor inconvenience
WWF characterizes sulfur-crested cockatoos as noisy. VCA describes cockatoo calls as loud, harsh and penetrating, notes that they may scream often, and does not recommend them for noise-sensitive people (VCA general information). Calling can occur at dawn, around activity changes, when the bird wants contact, or when it is distressed. Punishing a scream can increase fear and damage trust without solving the underlying need.

Consider shared walls, neighbors, children’s sleep, remote work, household members with sensory sensitivities and local nuisance rules. Visit experienced cockatoo caretakers or a reputable rescue to hear the volume in person; recordings rarely convey how penetrating a call can be. If your housing cannot tolerate unpredictable loud vocalization, the bird is not a safe match even if every other requirement is manageable.
Behavior and welfare problems are common enough to plan for
Feather-destructive behavior is not inevitable, but it is a serious welfare signal requiring medical and behavioral assessment. A Scottish Government evidence review summarizes a 2014 survey of 310 UK cockatoos: 42.4% had shown feather-destructive behavior at some point in life. The review also reports that the surveyed birds acquired from pet shops had a six-fold greater risk than those acquired from private breeders (Scottish Government scoping review).
Those are findings from one survey population, not a prediction for an individual bird and not proof that acquisition source alone causes the behavior. Feather damage can involve illness, diet, stress, insufficient sleep, boredom, environmental change or learned habits. A bird that plucks needs an avian examination and a carefully changed environment; simply adding a toy or rehoming it without assessment can worsen the problem.
Other warning signs include persistent screaming, biting, pacing, sleep disruption, weight change, destructive chewing and withdrawal. Keep a daily record of sleep, food, droppings, activity and vocalization so a veterinarian can distinguish medical issues from environmental or behavioral causes.

Species and individual differences matter
| Bird or source | Published lifespan information | Care and welfare cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Sulfur-crested cockatoo (WWF) | 65 years on average; up to 120 years in captivity | WWF rates the pet-care, diet and housing challenge as extremely difficult; the species is described as noisy. WWF also says import to the United States is restricted. |
| Umbrella cockatoo (WWF) | Up to 70 years in captivity | WWF identifies high animal-welfare risk and raises conservation and illegal-trade concerns. |
| Cockatoos generally (VCA) | 25–45 years generally; 70–80 years possible for larger species | Calls are loud, harsh and penetrating; VCA says they may scream often and advises against them for noise-sensitive people. |
These assessments are not interchangeable and do not describe every cockatoo species. Ask about the exact species, age, sex if known, health history, social history, previous homes, diet, sleep routine and behavior. An adult rescue bird may have needs that differ sharply from a hand-raised juvenile, and a calm individual can still develop problems when its environment changes.
Use this household test before acquiring one
- Time: Can you provide hours of interaction, enrichment and supervised out-of-cage activity every day, including weekends?
- Backup: Who will provide that care during travel, illness, work changes or family emergencies?
- Space: Is there a secure flight and exercise area, not only a cage?
- Noise: Can everyone in the home and nearby neighbors tolerate loud, penetrating calls?
- Experience: Have you handled large parrots and learned to read body language without relying on punishment?
- Medical access: Is an avian veterinarian reachable, and can you pay for annual examinations and unexpected treatment?
- Enrichment: Can you rotate safe perches, puzzles and foraging activities while preserving social time and exercise?
- Long-term care: Is there a written lifetime and rehoming plan if you can no longer provide care?
- Household safety: Can you control fumes, open doors, fans, toxic foods, plants and interactions with other animals?
If several answers are no, do not acquire a cockatoo. If the answers are yes, seek an experienced rescue or sanctuary assessment and meet birds in person before making a commitment.

ASPCA identifies companionship, including at least one bird companion for some large parrots—especially species that mate for life—as part of their care needs. WWF describes multiple individuals in a large aviary as an ideal setting for sulfur-crested cockatoos. That does not mean every owner should buy a second bird.

Rescue, legality and conservation checks
ASPCA encourages capable caretakers to rescue from a sanctuary or shelter rather than purchase from a breeder or pet store. A reputable rescue can describe the bird’s history, behavior, diet and medical needs and may offer support after adoption. Ask to see records, learn what triggers stress, and confirm that the organization has a process for returns if the placement fails.
Legal status is species- and location-specific. WWF says sulfur-crested cockatoos are restricted for import to the United States and advises checking state, county and city rules. WWF’s umbrella assessment raises declining-population and illegal-trade concerns. Verify current permits, provenance and transport requirements with the relevant wildlife authority before acquiring any bird; do not assume that a seller’s paperwork is sufficient.
If you can no longer keep the bird, contact a local rescue center, responsible pet store, accredited zoo, veterinarian or another trusted home, as WWF advises. Never release a pet cockatoo into the wild. A captive bird may lack survival skills, spread disease or become an ecological problem.
When a cockatoo can be a good fit
A cockatoo may suit an experienced caretaker with stable housing, unusually high tolerance for noise, a bird-safe flight area, daily time at home, access to avian medicine, funds for decades of care and a documented successor plan. Such a person accepts that affection is not the same as welfare and that difficult behavior must be addressed through veterinary and environmental work rather than punishment.
For a first-time bird owner, a noise-sensitive household, an apartment with vulnerable neighbors, or anyone seeking a pet that can be left alone for long periods, a cockatoo is a poor choice. Meeting one at a rescue can still be valuable: you can support an existing bird without creating demand for an animal whose needs you cannot reliably meet.
A practical first-step plan
- Identify the exact species and check current local and national ownership rules.
- Spend time with adult birds at a reputable rescue or sanctuary and listen to their calls in person.
- Arrange an initial consultation with an avian veterinarian and estimate annual and emergency costs.
- Design a secure flight, sleep and social area; remove household hazards before the bird arrives.
- Write a daily schedule covering sleep, meals, training, social time, flight and enrichment.
- Document a backup caregiver, medical records, funds and a rehoming route for future incapacity.
- Adopt only when the rescue, veterinarian and household agree that the individual bird’s needs match your capacity.
Bottom line
Cockatoos can be extraordinary companions, but their lifetime of social, physical, behavioral and medical needs makes them unsuitable for most homes. Treat the decision as a decades-long welfare commitment—not a choice based on appearance, affection or cage size. If you cannot guarantee daily interaction, safe flight and enrichment, tolerable noise, specialist veterinary care and responsible lifelong backup, choose not to acquire one and support a reputable rescue instead.
