Cocomo and INU are real robot companions demonstrated by Tokyo-based Ludens AI at CES 2026—but they were not established retail products by August 12, 2026. The larger Cocomo is a mobile, warm, touch-responsive companion designed to follow its owner. INU is a smaller desktop “alien puppy” that reacts with sounds, blinking, and tail movement. That distinction matters because these machines represent a different idea of an AI pet. They are not primarily robotic vacuum cleaners, home assistants, or talking versions of Alexa. Their purpose is presence: responding to touch, proximity, voices, movement, and repeated interaction in ways intended to encourage emotional attachment.

What Cocomo is supposed to do
Cocomo is Ludens AI’s larger companion robot. The CES version had a fuzzy, egg-shaped body mounted on a wheeled base. Small legs reportedly allowed it to be carried or held, while the mobile base was designed to let Cocomo follow its owner around the home.

- Playful Puppy Companion: Meet the Ruko 18011 robot dog—a playful companion that walks, spins, wags its tail, dances, and even lifts its leg to “pee.” Just a gentle touch on its head, and it responds with cheerful sounds and silly moves, bringing endless giggles without the mess of a real pet.
- LED Faces That Delight: With 70 glowing LED lights, this puppy shows more than 30 animated facial expressions. From wide happy eyes to goofy faces, kids can instantly see its moods, making storytelling, pretend play, and silly roleplay games more magical.
- Learn Through Programming: Instead of just watching, kids become the “trainer.” With the programming mode, they can design up to 50 custom moves—like a dance routine or a parade of tricks. It’s a fun, hands-on way to spark creativity, problem-solving, and early STEM skills.
- Control Near or Far: Whether kids are racing it across the living room or guiding it in the backyard, they’re always in charge. The 2.4GHz remote works from up to 98 feet away, while simple hand gestures let them direct their pup up close—so play never gets boring.
- Safe Fun in Anywhere: This clever pup knows when something’s in the way. Thanks to obstacle-avoidance sensors, it smoothly avoids walls and furniture. Perfect for small apartments, bedrooms, or any indoor play space where kids can enjoy worry-free fun.
Its interaction model is deliberately nonverbal. Rather than carrying on ordinary spoken conversations, Cocomo uses hums, sounds, movement, and physical reactions. Ludens has described a personality that could develop over time through repeated contact, imitation, spontaneous gestures, and learned preferences.
The most unusual claim concerns Cocomo’s exterior temperature. Reports from CES described a target near human body temperature—about 37°C, or 98.6°F—with the possibility of becoming warmer during high-contact interactions such as hugging. That is a company claim reported by media, not an independently verified performance result. It should not be treated as proof of a therapeutic effect or as evidence that Cocomo reproduces the experience of holding a living animal.
The intended appeal is easy to understand: a robot that follows you, makes small sounds, reacts when touched, and feels warm may create a stronger sense of companionship than a screen-based assistant. But whether that feeling lasts beyond a trade-show demonstration will depend on details that Ludens had not yet published, including battery life, noise, maintenance, responsiveness, and how varied the robot’s behavior remains after the novelty fades.
What INU is supposed to do
INU is the smaller companion in Ludens AI’s CES lineup. The company described it as an “alien pupu” or alien puppy intended to stay on a desk or workspace rather than travel from room to room.
At the demonstration described by Engadget, INU reacted through audio and movement. Its tail could wiggle in response to voice and touch, and its single eye could blink. Later company and investor descriptions continued to position it as a desktop companion with expressive tail and body movement—not as a conventional voice assistant.
The most defensible use case for INU is workspace companionship. It could function as a small, expressive object that acknowledges a person’s presence, reacts to sound or touch, and adds playful activity to a desk. That is a narrower role than Cocomo’s roaming-home concept, but it may also be easier to deliver: INU does not need to navigate rooms, follow a person safely, or manage the same battery and mobility demands.
Descriptions of advanced memory, autonomy, and long-term personalization should still be treated as company plans or positioning rather than established product specifications. CES did not establish how much INU can remember, how independently it behaves, or how well it distinguishes between different people and situations.

Cocomo and INU are not robotic dogs or AI assistants
| Feature | Cocomo | INU |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor | Fuzzy, egg-shaped mobile robot on wheels | Small desktop alien-puppy companion |
| Primary setting | Home; designed to follow its owner | Desk or workspace |
| Interaction emphasis | Touch, voice response, movement, warmth, nonverbal sounds | Voice and touch response, tail and body movement, blinking |
| Conversation | Nonverbal sounds rather than ordinary spoken dialogue | Expressive audio and movement rather than assistant-style conversation |
| Commercial status as of August 12, 2026 | Prototype or pre-commercial product moving toward crowdfunding | Prototype or pre-commercial product moving toward crowdfunding |
This positioning places both products closer to social or affective robotics than to productivity automation. Their proposed value is not that they complete chores or answer every question. It is that they provide a physical, responsive presence.
What CES 2026 actually proved
CES 2026 officially ran from January 6 through January 9 in Las Vegas. Ludens AI demonstrated Cocomo and INU there, attracting media attention and business-development interest. The company later said the event generated coverage and opportunities with potential partners and investors.
However, the evidence from CES has important limits. Independent hands-on reporting was limited, and Engadget noted that the noisy show floor made it difficult to witness many of Cocomo’s abilities in action. A trade-show demonstration can show that a prototype exists and can produce selected behaviors. It cannot establish that a robot will be reliable in an ordinary home, operate autonomously for long periods, learn a stable personality, or remain useful after months of ownership.
It is therefore accurate to say that Cocomo and INU arrived at CES as demonstrated prototypes. It is not accurate, based on the available evidence, to call them independently tested, fully autonomous, production-ready, or broadly available consumer products.
The Tool Desk

Many consumer AI products compete on how naturally they talk. Ludens is pursuing a different route. Cocomo’s hums, warmth, motion, and physical reactions—and INU’s blinking and wagging—are intended to make the robot feel present rather than merely informative.
That may be an important design choice. People do not form attachments to pets because pets provide the best factual answers. Attachment often grows from repeated small signals: a response to touch, a familiar sound, a recognizable routine, or an unexpected moment of play. A companion robot can imitate some of those signals without pretending to be a living animal.
There is also a trade-off. Nonverbal behavior can feel charming and less demanding than conversation, but it can be harder to evaluate. A spoken assistant can be tested by asking it a question. A companion robot must be judged by whether its reactions feel varied, timely, and emotionally coherent over weeks or months. If every response is repetitive, the emotional premise may weaken quickly.

Are Cocomo and INU available to buy?
Not on the evidence available as of August 12, 2026. At CES, Ludens had not disclosed a public price or confirmed retail availability. Reporting described a waitlist connected with a forthcoming crowdfunding campaign for Cocomo, while INU was also described as heading toward crowdfunding later in 2026.
A January 2026 report characterized crowdfunding as part of Ludens’s plan to test market demand. An April company announcement and related investor communications likewise described crowdfunding during 2026 as the intended route toward consumer availability and eventual overseas-market entry.
The research available for this article did not establish:
- a confirmed public price for either robot;
- a completed crowdfunding campaign;
- a guaranteed shipping date;
- general retail or Amazon availability; or
- that a person joining a waitlist would receive a product.
The company’s Google Play companion app, listed by July 30, 2026, is a meaningful productization signal. Its stated functions include connecting to and managing a Ludens device, configuring preferences, exploring interactive modes, receiving system updates, and supporting everyday Cocomo interaction. But an app listing does not prove that Cocomo is shipping at scale. It may support development, demonstrations, testing, or future owners.
Readers who want launch alerts should look for Ludens AI waitlist or launch updates and verify the campaign’s price, delivery terms, country availability, refund policy, and hardware specifications before paying. A crowdfunding pledge is not the same as a normal retail purchase.
Company and funding context
Ludens AI is based in Tokyo. In an April 14, 2026 announcement, the startup said it had raised approximately ¥600 million in an angel round involving CWB Capital, Linear Capital, and PKSHA Algorithm Fund. Ludens said the money would support product development, hiring, and domestic and international business development.
Investor and industry coverage has also described founder Xue Lijun as having previous experience at Tesla and DJI and later helping build AI systems at FITURE. Those biographical details come primarily from investor and industry reporting rather than a detailed corporate biography in the official materials reviewed here, so they should be understood as attributed background rather than independently established evidence of product performance.

Privacy and safety questions buyers should ask
The Google Play listing for Ludens’s companion app reports that the developer shares no data with third parties, collects no data, encrypts data in transit, and allows users to request deletion. Those are developer-provided disclosures. They are not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee that every future hardware, firmware, or cloud feature will follow the same practices.
Before buying a companion robot that can perceive its surroundings, prospective owners should look for a complete answer to these questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- What sensors are installed? The available descriptions point to some combination of microphones, cameras, proximity sensing, touch sensing, and environmental interaction, but a final specification is needed.
- What happens locally and what goes to the cloud? Buyers need to know whether audio, images, behavioral data, or account information leave the home.
- How long is data retained? “Deletion available” is useful, but retention periods and backup policies still matter.
- Is an account or subscription required? A robot can become much more expensive or less useful if essential behavior depends on a paid cloud service.
- What protections exist for children? This includes recording indicators, parental controls, account separation, safe charging, and limits on interaction.
- What happens if the company shuts down its servers? A useful fallback mode should be explained before purchase.
- Can the device be repaired? Battery replacement, wheel or motor repair, exterior cleaning, and software support are especially important for a robot intended for daily physical interaction.
Can you buy an alternative now?
Possibly, but alternatives should not be confused with Cocomo or INU. An interactive robot pet or robotic toy may offer movement, sounds, touch responses, or simple autonomous behavior. A desktop companion robot may be closer to INU’s form factor. These products can be useful comparisons, but many will lack Cocomo’s claimed warmth, mobility, nonverbal personality development, or planned learning features.
Before considering any alternative, check that the listing is current in your country and that it clearly states what the robot actually does. “AI pet” can describe anything from a programmable toy to a cloud-connected conversational device. Confirm stock, age rating, battery details, app requirements, privacy terms, warranty coverage, and whether the product is genuinely interactive rather than merely animated.
For a lower-cost experiment, an interactive robotic toy may demonstrate the appeal of motion and responsive behavior without the cost or uncertainty of an unreleased companion platform. It should be treated as a toy substitute, not as evidence that it provides the same emotional or technical experience Ludens is proposing.
The larger CES 2026 companion-robot trend
Cocomo and INU appeared during a broader CES shift toward robots marketed as companions or “cyber pets,” alongside humanoid helpers and task-oriented machines. CES technology categories relevant to this trend included AI and Robotics, Pet Tech, Toys, Wellness, and Smart Home.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe trend is significant, but it should not be mistaken for mass adoption. Companion robots are entering a commercialization phase in which companies are testing whether people will pay for physical AI with personality and presence. Ludens’s fundraising, app development, media attention, and planned crowdfunding are progress signals. The missing price, shipping commitment, and long-term reliability evidence are equally important signals.

What will determine whether Cocomo and INU succeed?
The novelty of a warm, expressive robot may attract attention, but everyday success will depend on practical details:
- Price: Can the hardware be priced below the cost of a premium gadget while supporting the company’s software and service expenses?
- Battery life: A mobile companion that needs frequent charging may be less engaging than its concept suggests.
- Behavioral variety: Reactions must remain interesting without becoming random, irritating, or repetitive.
- Reliability: Following a person around a home is much harder than moving on a controlled CES floor.
- Privacy: Owners need clear control over microphones, cameras, sensing, accounts, and cloud data.
- Repairability: Moving parts, batteries, wheels, heating elements, and soft exteriors all create long-term service questions.
- Offline resilience: Core companionship should not disappear if an internet connection or cloud platform fails.
- Actual delivery: A successful campaign, production run, safety testing, and dependable shipping matter more than a compelling prototype video.
Cocomo and INU are best understood as an early test of whether people want AI companions that behave less like assistants and more like responsive objects—or perhaps artificial pets. CES 2026 showed that Ludens AI had an appealing and distinctive prototype concept. It did not yet show that the robots were ready for ordinary homes or available for ordinary retail purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions

INU is the smaller desktop companion. Ludens described it as an alien puppy that reacts through audio and movement, including tail movement in response to voice or touch and a blinking single eye. It is designed to remain on a desk rather than follow someone around the home.
Does the Ludens companion app guarantee privacy?
Not necessarily. The app’s Google Play disclosures are statements from the developer, not an independent privacy audit. Before buying, verify the final sensor list, local-versus-cloud processing, retention periods, account requirements, child-safety controls, and offline behavior.
Are Cocomo and INU alternatives to Alexa or robotic vacuum cleaners?
They were presented as companion robots, with Cocomo intended for the home and INU intended for a desk or workspace. Their proposed value is emotional and playful interaction through touch, movement, warmth, sound, and presence—not household chores or conventional voice-assistant productivity.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Cocomo and INU are promising CES 2026 companion-robot prototypes, not confirmed retail products. Cocomo emphasizes mobility, warmth, touch, and nonverbal expression; INU offers a smaller desktop companion experience. Until Ludens AI confirms pricing, a live campaign, shipping, privacy details, and long-term support, treat both as pre-commercial products rather than robot pets you can buy today.
