The Collie is a highly trainable, affectionate Scottish herding breed that can be an excellent family companion—but it is not a low-maintenance dog. Both Rough and Smooth Collies need daily interaction, regular exercise, positive training, coat care, and responsible preventive health care. The Rough Collie has the familiar long, flowing coat associated with Lassie; the Smooth Collie has a shorter outer coat, but it is still double-coated and sheds.

Collies usually thrive when they are included in family life and given useful things to do. They may be a poor match for someone seeking an independent dog that can spend most of the day alone, requires little grooming, or is satisfied with only brief bathroom walks.

What is a Collie?

The Collie is an AKC-recognized Herding Group breed historically associated with herding work in Scotland. Today, Collies are kept as family companions, performance dogs, and versatile working dogs. The Collie Club of America is the AKC parent club for both the Rough and Smooth Collie.

Rough and Smooth Collies are coat varieties of the same breed in this context—not separate breeds. The distinction is especially important for appearance, shedding, and grooming expectations. The Rough Collie is the variety most people picture when they think of Lassie, while the Smooth Collie has a shorter, close-lying outer coat.

Rough Collie vs. Smooth Collie

Feature Rough Collie Smooth Collie
Outer coat Long, abundant, and feathered Shorter and close-lying
Undercoat Present Present
Main grooming concern Loose undercoat, tangles, and mats Loose undercoat and shedding
Maintenance implication Regular brushing, with extra attention to feathered and friction-prone areas Regular brushing, particularly during heavier shedding periods

The Smooth variety is not maintenance-free. Its shorter coat may be easier to inspect and brush, but the dense undercoat can still shed substantially. Neither variety should be described as hypoallergenic or low-shedding.

Collie temperament and personality

Collies are generally described as intelligent, friendly, loyal, affectionate, sensitive, and responsive. Many form close relationships with their people and can fit well into family life when they receive appropriate socialization, training, and companionship.

That sensitivity affects how a Collie should be trained. Harsh or punitive handling can damage trust and may make learning more difficult. Calm, positive, consistent instruction is a better approach. Reward-based training, clear boundaries, and predictable routines usually make the most of the breed’s willingness to cooperate.

Companionship matters

A Collie should not be treated as a dog that can spend most of its life alone in a yard. The breed’s social nature means it generally does best when included in household activities. Long periods of isolation and boredom can contribute to unwanted behaviors, including barking.

Some Collies alert-bark, and some may try to herd children, adults, or other pets. These are tendencies rather than guarantees. Early socialization, supervision, and training can help a family teach the dog when alerting or controlling movement is inappropriate.

How much exercise does a Collie need?

Collies generally need regular physical activity and mental stimulation. A suitable routine can include daily walks, interactive play, training games, and opportunities to run in a secure area. The breed is best described as moderate-to-active: it usually does not require the extreme workload of the highest-drive working breeds, but it should not be expected to thrive on brief walks around the block alone.

Mental work is just as important as physical exercise for many Collies. Useful outlets include:

  • Obedience and trick training
  • Agility
  • Herding activities
  • Barn hunt
  • Lure coursing
  • Food puzzles and scent games
  • Structured play and recall practice

Exercise needs vary with age, health, temperament, and the individual dog. Puppies need controlled activity and rest rather than forced endurance work, while older dogs may need shorter, gentler sessions. The goal is consistent engagement that leaves the dog content—not exhausted or overstimulated.

Training and socialization

Collies are quick learners and are often rewarding to train. Begin with puppy socialization and basic manners, then continue teaching throughout the dog’s life. A puppy class can help introduce handling, people, dogs, and new environments, but it should be the beginning of training rather than the end.

Important skills for a Collie household include:

  • Recall and safe response to the owner’s voice
  • Loose-leash walking
  • Calm greetings and settling in the home
  • Appropriate management of alert barking
  • Polite behavior around children and other pets
  • Cooperation with brushing, nail care, ear checks, and veterinary handling

Teaching grooming cooperation early is particularly practical. A puppy that learns to stand calmly for brushing and gentle handling is easier to care for throughout its life. Keep sessions short, use rewards, and stop before the dog becomes frightened or frustrated.

Collie grooming and shedding

Rough Collies need regular brushing through the coat and down to the skin. Brushing removes loose undercoat and helps prevent mats, especially in areas where hair is feathered or experiences friction. Check behind the ears, around the elbows, and through other feathered areas carefully.

Smooth Collies also need regular grooming. Their shorter outer coat does not eliminate the dense undercoat, and seasonal coat changes can produce a noticeable increase in loose hair. Brushing helps manage shedding and gives owners an opportunity to inspect the skin.

A practical Collie grooming routine

  1. Brush regularly. Adjust the frequency when shedding increases, and work gently in sections so the brush reaches the undercoat.
  2. Check friction-prone areas. Pay particular attention behind the ears, around the elbows, and anywhere feathering is beginning to tangle.
  3. Inspect the skin. Look for irritation, parasites, lumps, or areas that are painful to touch, and contact a veterinarian about concerning findings.
  4. Maintain the nails. Trim them as needed or have a groomer or veterinary professional demonstrate safe technique.
  5. Teach handling. Reward calm standing for brushing, foot handling, ear checks, and examinations.

A slicker brush for Collies or a suitable long-pin grooming brush can be a practical tool for regular coat care, but no single brush is ideal for every dog or owner. Choose a tool appropriate to the coat, use it gently, and ask a professional groomer to demonstrate technique if you are unsure. An undercoat rake may be useful during heavy shedding, but it is an optional tool rather than a requirement for every Collie.

Avoid making shaving or aggressive stripping the default solution. The Collie’s coat should be managed with regular, careful grooming instead. If a coat is severely matted, professional help is safer than pulling painfully at the skin or using tools without instruction.

Collie health: what prospective owners should know

The Collie Club of America describes the breed as generally healthy and hardy, but responsible ownership still includes screening for inherited conditions and planning appropriate veterinary care. A health test can reduce breeding risk or identify a relevant status; it cannot guarantee that an individual dog will never become ill.

Collie Eye Anomaly

Collie Eye Anomaly, or CEA, is an inherited eye condition present from birth. The Collie Club of America advises that Collie puppies receive an eye examination by a qualified veterinary ophthalmologist before placement. A puppy’s eyes may look normal to an untrained observer, so a casual visual impression is not a substitute for documented examination.

An eye examination and a DNA result are not interchangeable. Ask a breeder for written documentation, find out how the parents were evaluated, and ask how eye findings are handled in the breeding program.

MDR1 medication sensitivity

MDR1 refers to a mutation that can affect a dog’s response to certain medications. A dog’s status can vary, so it is not accurate to claim that every Collie is unsafe with ordinary veterinary medicine. Washington State University explains that testing is the way to determine an individual dog’s MDR1 status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for the dog’s result and discuss it with the veterinarian. Keep the information in the veterinary record so that medication decisions can take the dog’s status into account. Do not start, stop, or substitute medication based only on general breed information or an internet list.

Other health-testing considerations

The AKC national breed-club health-testing directory lists DNA testing areas for Collies including PRA-rcd2, MDR1, DMS, and CEA/CH. When evaluating a breeder, request the parents’ written health records and ask which tests were performed, by whom, and what the results mean for the planned litter.

Built with high-quality TPR, this heavy-duty slicker brush offers exceptional value and long-lasting performance. It is perfectly optimized for standard small to medium pets, removing trapped fur with ease. (Note: Not ideal for tightly curly coats like Poodles).

Responsible placement should also include disclosure of known defects, a written health guarantee or contract, and clear records. Testing is valuable evidence of responsible breeding, but it is not a promise of perfect health.

Collie lifespan and long-term commitment

AKC and Collie Club of America materials commonly cite an approximate lifespan of 12 to 14 years. That is a general breed expectation, not a guarantee for an individual dog. Prospective owners should plan for a decade or more of grooming, veterinary care, training, exercise, and companionship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The financial commitment includes routine preventive care as well as the possibility of unexpected illness or injury. A realistic plan for veterinary expenses, grooming supplies, training, and safe exercise is part of responsible ownership.

Is a Collie a good family dog?

A Collie may be a good fit for a family that wants a people-oriented, trainable dog and can provide daily activity, positive instruction, regular coat care, and meaningful inclusion in the household. Many families appreciate the breed’s affectionate nature and responsiveness.

However, supervision is still essential around young children and other pets. Children should be taught to respect the dog’s space, food, sleep, and grooming sessions. Adults should manage interactions rather than assuming that a friendly breed will automatically tolerate every situation.

A Collie may be a poor fit if you want:

  • A dog that can be left alone for most of the day
  • A low-shedding or allergy-friendly breed
  • A dog that needs almost no grooming
  • A completely quiet dog with no potential for alert barking
  • A companion satisfied with minimal exercise and no mental work
  • An independent backyard dog rather than an involved household companion

Finding a responsible Collie breeder or adoption resource

Do not choose a Collie based only on the Rough variety’s appearance or the cultural image of Lassie. Meet adult dogs where possible and ask how their temperaments, exercise needs, grooming, and health compare with your household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When speaking with a breeder, ask for:

  • Written health-testing records for both parents
  • Documented puppy eye examinations by an appropriately qualified veterinary ophthalmologist
  • Relevant DNA results, including information about MDR1 and the tests recommended for the breeding program
  • Disclosure of known health or temperament concerns
  • A written contract and health guarantee
  • Information about how puppies are socialized and matched with homes

The Collie Club of America offers breed education and rescue-related resources. Use verified breed-club or nonprofit sources rather than relying on unverified online listings, and confirm the organization’s current geography, screening standards, availability, and nonprofit status before applying or sending money.

Collie ownership checklist

  • Can you provide daily companionship rather than leaving the dog isolated?
  • Can you provide regular walks, play, training, and secure opportunities to run?
  • Are you prepared for shedding in both coat varieties?
  • Can you commit to routine brushing and grooming cooperation training?
  • Will you use positive, consistent training instead of harsh corrections?

  • Will you verify eye examinations and health-testing records before buying?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Smooth Collies shed less than Rough Collies?

No. Smooth Collies have a shorter outer coat, but they are still double-coated and can shed substantially, especially during seasonal coat changes. Rough Collies generally need more attention to mats and feathered areas, while Smooth Collies still require regular brushing.

Are Collies good family dogs?

Yes, a Collie can be an excellent family companion when properly socialized, trained, exercised, and supervised around children and other pets. The breed is generally affectionate and people-oriented, but individual temperament varies and children must learn to respect the dog’s boundaries.

How much exercise does a Collie need?

Most Collies need daily walks, play, training, and mental stimulation, plus occasional opportunities to run safely. They are best considered moderate-to-active dogs rather than extreme endurance athletes, but brief bathroom walks alone are usually not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What health tests should Collie owners ask about?

Important health topics include Collie Eye Anomaly, MDR1, PRA-rcd2, and dermatomyositis-related testing areas. Ask breeders for written records and puppy eye-examination documentation. MDR1 status should be discussed with a veterinarian and kept in the dog’s medical record.

How long do Collies live?

A typical breed expectation cited by the AKC and Collie Club of America is approximately 12 to 14 years. This is a general estimate, not a guarantee for an individual dog.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Collies are affectionate, intelligent companions for owners who want an involved relationship with their dog. Rough and Smooth Collies both shed, need regular grooming and daily engagement, and deserve careful attention to inherited-health screening—especially eye evaluation and MDR1 status. If you can provide companionship, training, activity, and responsible care for the dog’s expected 12–14-year lifespan, a Collie may be an excellent fit.
