Most people who talk about the “four main types of Collies” mean the Rough Collie, Smooth Collie, Border Collie and Bearded Collie. That is a useful owner-friendly grouping, but it is not a universal kennel-club classification: Rough and Smooth are the two coat varieties of the Collie, while Border Collie and Bearded Collie are separate named breeds. The distinction matters because coat maintenance, traditional work and daily exercise can differ more than their shared name suggests.

What “four types of Collies” actually means

“Four types” is an informal way to organize four familiar Collie-named dogs. The American Kennel Club describes the Collie as having two varieties: Rough and Smooth. The United Kennel Club likewise treats them as one breed whose varieties differ in coat. Border Collie and Bearded Collie appear as separate breed entries in the kennel-club standards consulted.

That means a Rough Collie and a Smooth Collie are not unrelated breeds simply because one has a flowing coat and the other has a short one. By contrast, a Border Collie is its own working herding breed, and a Bearded Collie is a distinct Scottish cattle-and-sheep herder. Their names reflect related historical herding traditions, not a single four-part official breed classification.

The United Kennel Club notes that the Collie’s precise origins are unknown, although the Scottish Highlands are generally accepted as its original home. Breed standards describe an ideal, not a promise about every puppy or adult. A dog can vary in coat, energy and temperament, so use the categories as a starting point rather than a substitute for meeting the individual dog.

At-a-glance comparison

Dog Classification Coat information Traditional role Practical ownership point
Rough Collie Long-coated Collie variety Long outer coat with a fuller, flowing appearance Collie herding and farm work Plan for regular brushing and seasonal shedding; evaluate the individual dog’s character and your household.
Smooth Collie Short-coated Collie variety Short, hard, dense and flat, according to the Collie Club of America Collie herding and farm work Usually simpler coat upkeep than a Rough, but still choose for fit and temperament rather than hair length alone.
Border Collie Separate breed Moderately long or smooth varieties are recognized by The Royal Kennel Club Highly work-oriented herding Requires substantial daily engagement; the American Kennel Club warns it can be a poor fit when an owner lacks time, energy or ways to keep the dog occupied.
Bearded Collie Separate breed Long, shaggy coat Scottish cattle herding and sheep work The Royal Kennel Club profile lists daily grooming, so coat-care time is a routine ownership responsibility.

1. Rough Collie

What defines it

The Rough Collie is the long-coated variety of the Collie. Its familiar silhouette comes from a longer coat that frames the neck and body and gives the breed a noticeably fuller outline than its Smooth counterpart. In classification terms, “Rough” identifies the coat variety, not a separate breed name.

Coat care

A long coat catches loose hair, dirt and plant material more readily than a short coat. Owners should establish a brushing routine that reaches through the coat rather than only smoothing the surface. Check friction points such as behind the ears, under the front legs and around the hindquarters, where tangles can form first. Regular checks also let you find skin irritation, burrs or parasites before they become difficult to remove.

Brushing frequency depends on the dog’s coat, season and lifestyle. A dog that spends time outdoors may need attention more often than a mostly indoor companion. A slicker brush is a reasonable search term for basic coat-care equipment, but no particular brush is established as universally best or officially endorsed by the breed sources.

Work and household fit

The Rough Collie comes from the same Collie tradition as the Smooth variety, so appearance should not be the only selection criterion. The Collie Club of America’s July 2025 guide emphasizes choosing a family dog for breed character and how well that character fits the new family. Discuss exercise, training, noise, time alone and grooming with a responsible breeder or rescue before committing.

2. Smooth Collie

What defines it

The Smooth Collie is the other Collie coat variety. The Collie Club of America describes its coat as short, hard, dense and flat. Structurally it belongs to the Collie breed rather than being a separate breed created from the Rough Collie.

Coat care

Short hair does not mean no maintenance. A dense coat still sheds and benefits from routine brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. A grooming session is generally quicker than working through a long coat, and there are fewer long feathered areas in which mats can hide. During heavy shedding periods, brushing more often can reduce the amount of hair on furniture and clothing.

Choosing beyond the coat

People sometimes choose a Smooth Collie solely to avoid the work associated with a Rough coat. That can be sensible if your schedule or tolerance for grooming is limited, but coat length does not decide whether a particular dog is calm, active, sociable or easy to train. Ask how the parents and related dogs behave in ordinary household situations, and observe the individual dog rather than relying on the variety label.

3. Border Collie

A separate working breed

The Border Collie is not a short-haired Collie variety. It is a distinct breed with its own standard and a strong working-herding identity. The Royal Kennel Club recognizes moderately long and smooth coats, so “Border Collie” does not describe one fixed hair length.

Energy and mental workload

The American Kennel Club characterizes the Border Collie as energetic and work-oriented and cautions that it may be a poor match for an owner who lacks the time, energy or means to keep it occupied. The relevant question is not simply whether you can provide a walk. Consider whether you can supply consistent training, problem-solving activities, structured play and an appropriate outlet for a dog bred to pay close attention to work.

Insufficient engagement can show up as restlessness, nuisance behaviors or an inability to settle. More exercise alone is not always the answer; the dog also needs clear training and recovery time. A realistic plan might combine obedience practice, scent or food puzzles, controlled games and activities that fit the dog’s physical ability. Start gradually with puppies and obtain professional guidance if arousal or herding behavior becomes difficult to manage.

Coat choices do not change the breed’s needs

A smooth-coated Border Collie may require less detangling than a moderately long-coated one, but both are Border Collies with the same fundamental work orientation. Select on lifestyle compatibility first, then consider coat length, shedding and grooming time.

4. Bearded Collie

History and identity

The Bearded Collie is a separate, shaggy-coated Scottish herder used with cattle and sheep. The Royal Kennel Club reports that its first breed standard was drawn up in 1912 and that The Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1959. Those dates are historical milestones, not a claim about how many Bearded Collies exist today.

Daily grooming is part of the deal

The Royal Kennel Club’s current profile lists a long coat and daily grooming. That recommendation should be treated as a routine, not an occasional beauty treatment. Divide the coat into sections, brush from the skin outward and pay close attention to areas that rub or collect moisture. Puppies should learn to stand for handling early, because a full-grown shaggy coat can make reluctant grooming physically difficult.

Daily grooming also gives you a practical health check. Look for changes in skin, lumps, sore areas, damaged nails or debris caught near the feet. If a coat has already formed tight mats, ask a qualified groomer or veterinarian for help rather than pulling painfully at the skin.

Activity and companionship

A Bearded Collie’s herding background makes regular activity and interaction important, but the exact amount varies with age, health and the individual dog. Build a weekly routine that includes walks, training and opportunities to use the dog’s senses. A family considering this breed should budget both the time for coat care and the time needed to teach good household habits.

How the four compare in everyday life

Coat workload

From least complicated to most time-intensive in the descriptions available, the Smooth Collie has a short, dense coat; the Rough Collie has a longer coat; the Border Collie may be smooth or moderately long; and the Bearded Collie has a long, shaggy coat with daily grooming listed in its official profile. Individual coats can still vary in thickness and shedding, so ask to see the parents or adult relatives when possible.

Work heritage and activity

All four names are connected to herding history, but that does not make their daily requirements interchangeable. The Border Collie is specifically flagged for high energy and a strong work drive. Rough and Smooth Collies share a breed identity, while the Bearded Collie has its own Scottish cattle-and-sheep working history. Translate heritage into a practical plan: how many hours will the dog spend alone, who will train it, where can it exercise safely, and what will it do on bad-weather days?

Temperament is individual

Breed descriptions help set expectations, not guarantees. Socialization, early experiences, health, training and genetics all influence behavior. Meet the dam when possible, ask for health and behavior information, and be candid about children, other pets, visitors, travel and your tolerance for barking or chasing. The best match is the dog whose needs your household can meet consistently.

A decision checklist before you choose

  1. Decide whether you want a Collie variety or a separate breed. Choose Rough or Smooth if you specifically want the Collie breed and are deciding between its coat varieties. Consider Border or Bearded only after reviewing their distinct standards and work backgrounds.
  2. Measure your available time. Write down the hours available for exercise, training, grooming and companionship on an ordinary weekday, not just on weekends.
  3. Test your grooming tolerance. Handle a representative adult coat. Ask a groomer to demonstrate brushing and estimate how long a complete session takes.
  4. Plan mental engagement. Especially for a Border Collie, identify safe activities and training support before the dog arrives. A vague promise to “exercise more” is not a management plan.
  5. Evaluate the individual dog. Observe recovery from mild surprises, willingness to interact, handling tolerance and ability to settle. These observations complement, rather than replace, the breed label.
  6. Confirm support and costs. Identify a veterinarian, emergency clinic, training professional and grooming help. Ask the breeder or rescue what care, socialization and behavior history will be provided.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “There are officially four Collie breeds.” Not in the classification used by the sources here: Rough and Smooth are Collie varieties, while Border and Bearded are separate breeds.
  • “Smooth means no shedding.” A short, dense coat still sheds and needs brushing.
  • “A long coat tells you the dog’s temperament.” Coat is an appearance trait; it cannot guarantee energy level, sociability or trainability.
  • “A Border Collie only needs a longer walk.” Its work drive calls for structured mental engagement as well as physical activity.
  • “A breed standard predicts every adult exactly.” Standards describe an ideal and provide guidance; real dogs vary, and standard size is explicitly a guide rather than a guarantee.

Bottom line for prospective owners

Use the four-name list as a map, not as an official taxonomy. Rough and Smooth are coat varieties of the Collie; Border and Bearded are separate breeds with their own standards. Match the dog to your actual schedule by weighing coat care, training time, activity and the individual’s character. The right choice is the one you can care for every day, throughout the dog’s life.
