Children, youth and adults submit artwork. The aim is to make a species found almost nowhere else more visible to the people who live beside it. The World Parrot Trust (WPT) described the project in an article dated July 9, 2025. This guide covers what the initiative is, what the bird looks like, where it lives, what threatens it, and what art can and cannot do for it.
What Colors of Freedom is
According to the World Parrot Trust, the competition is led by Fundación CLB, working with the University Institute of Arts and José BalliviÔn Autonomous University of Beni. Artists of all ages submitted work in 2024, and the winning pieces were put on display. By the time WPT published its account in July 2025, a second edition was already underway.
The idea is simple. A bird with a tiny range can be unknown even to many people in its home country. Asking a community to draw, paint and exhibit it builds familiarity and local pride, and it starts conversations about conservation. WPT reported that winners in each category would visit CLB’s Blue-throated Macaw Conservation Center.
What is and isn’t confirmed
- The 2024 edition and the 2025 launch are documented in WPT’s July 2025 article.
- The prize of a visit to the conservation center was described in that article as applying to the 2025 edition. It should not be read as a standing offer.
- The sources do not give a 2026 schedule, an entry process, or current exhibition locations. Anyone who wants to enter or visit an exhibition should ask Fundación CLB or the World Parrot Trust directly.
- No measured conservation impact of the competition has been published. Participation and exhibition numbers are not conservation outcomes.
Where the Blue-throated Macaw lives
The species is endemic to Bolivia. The conservation sources place its small range in the north or north-central part of the country, in the Beni region and the Llanos de Moxos. The landscape is seasonally flooded savanna dotted with raised forest and palm islands, plus gallery forest along watercourses. American Bird Conservancy (ABC) notes that MotacĆŗ palms are an important food source and describes the wooded islands that rise out of the Beni savanna.

How to recognize it (and draw it)
ABC describes the bird as turquoise-blue above and golden-yellow below. Its pale facial skin is crossed by narrow lines of blue feathers, and it has a blue throat, which gives the species its name. For an artist, the facial skin and its fine feather lines are the details most easily lost. A reference photo is worth having before you start.
Colored pencils suit the fine facial lines and the blue-to-gold contrast well. This is only a general suggestion. The competition does not require or endorse any particular material.

Population figures, with caveats
| Figure | Source | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 208ā303 mature individuals, described as stable | World Parrot Trust fieldwork page | A population estimate. The page does not say which year it comes from, so it should not be read as a current census. |
| Nearly 40 birds | World Parrot Trust, 2022 census of the southern range | A survey count for one part of the range, not a species total. |
| About 65 birds | World Parrot Trust, 2023 count | A survey count, not a species total. |
Why it is endangered
Historical trapping for the live bird trade caused severe losses. The sources also describe ongoing pressures: habitat loss or degradation, fires, competition for nest cavities, predation, parasitism, disease and severe weather. Each source emphasizes different threats, depending on whether it is discussing nests, chicks, adults or habitat. Trapping is mainly a historical cause, while the rest are described as continuing pressures.

What conservation work is happening
The World Parrot Trust describes ongoing activities: field surveys and population monitoring, artificial nest boxes, safeguarding natural cavities, habitat protection and restoration, fire mitigation, community participation, and reintroduction or repatriation. ABC points to reserves established with Asociación ArmonĆa, including the Barba Azul Nature Reserve and the Laney Rickman Blue-throated Macaw Reserve.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where art fits
Art works on awareness and ownership. It gives local people a reason to know the species, talk about it and take pride in it. It cannot replace the work that actually raises nesting success and protects habitat, which is field research, land management and sustained local partnerships. The sensible reading is that art supports that work by building public support. It is not evidence that the population has recovered because of the competition.
