Book your kitten’s first veterinary visit within the first week at home, and sooner if the kitten seems ill. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) puts it plainly in its New Kitten Checklist: First Vet Visit, Supplies & First-Year Care, updated April 29, 2026: “Schedule your kitten’s first veterinary visit within the first week at home.” The checklist draws on the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines. This article turns that guidance into a practical order of work: home setup, records and questions, daily routines, and the signs that mean you should call a vet.
Before the kitten arrives
Prepare a quiet, kitten-safe area
Choose one calm room or area for the first days. Secure hazards such as electrical cords and medications. Set out food and water, bedding, a litter box, scratching resources and a few toys. A small space helps a new kitten settle, and it makes eating, drinking and litter habits easier for you to watch.
Set up the carrier early
Put the carrier out in advance with soft bedding, and add treats or toys. If the kitten has already used it as a resting spot, the trip to the clinic is less stressful. A carrier left in a cupboard until the day of the appointment becomes a frightening box.
Ask for records
Ask the shelter, breeder or previous caregiver for the kitten’s age, health history, vaccinations, parasite treatments and current diet. Take whatever you receive to the first visit.

Buy the basics first
The guidance supports practical supplies. It does not show that premium or branded versions are necessary. Compare products on practical criteria:

The first week: the veterinary visit
The first visit establishes the kitten’s health status and starts a plan for vaccines, parasite control, nutrition and follow-up.
What to bring
- Every shelter, breeder, adoption or previous veterinary record you have
- A fecal sample, if the clinic asks for one (check when you book)
- Your questions, written down
What to ask
- What did the exam find, and are any tests needed?
- Which preventive care is due now, and when should we return?
- Which parasite prevention suits this kitten, given our lifestyle and location?
- What should I feed, and how much?
- When should we discuss spaying or neutering?
- How should I handle introductions to other pets or people, and socialization and handling?
- Which symptoms need urgent attention?
Why there is no universal schedule here
Vaccine intervals vary with the age at first vaccination, the vaccine product and type, and the route of administration. Parasite risk depends on lifestyle and location. A schedule copied from a friend’s kitten, or an over-the-counter product picked from a shelf, may not suit yours. Let the veterinarian set the plan.

Daily setup and routines
Litter
AAHA’s checklist recommends one litter box per cat plus one extra. Place the boxes in separate locations that are easy to reach. Keep them clean. Check that the kitten can step in and turn around comfortably, and re-check as it grows.
Feeding
Use a kitten-appropriate diet and follow the feeding plan from your veterinarian. Needs change as the kitten grows. The AAHA checklist gives approximate calorie figures by age, but those are general reference points. Your veterinary team can tell you what an individual kitten needs, based on the diet and the kitten’s growth. Keep an eye on appetite and growth between visits.

Play and scratching
Provide toys, scratching surfaces and safe enrichment. Don’t use your hands or feet as toys. A kitten that learns to attack them will keep doing it as an adult, with bigger teeth and claws.
Gentle handling and positive experiences
Introduce people, handling, grooming, mouth care, the carrier and veterinary visits gradually. Use rewards, and slow down or stop if the kitten becomes frightened. AAHA’s 2021 kitten behavior guidance describes a sensitive socialization period that can begin as early as 2–3 weeks of age and may close by about 9–10 weeks. This is a developmental window rather than a rigid deadline. Many kittens arrive near its end, so keep new experiences pleasant and paced to the kitten.

When to call the veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if your kitten stops eating or shows a sudden change in behavior. Straining to urinate, vocalizing while trying to urinate, or repeated trips to the litter box can signal a urinary blockage, which can become life-threatening quickly. Treat these signs as an emergency and get immediate veterinary care. Don’t wait and watch at home.
