Por qué no debes darle comida ni agua
Un mapache bebé necesita atención especializada. Aunque parezca tener hambre o sed, no intentes alimentarlo con leche de vaca, fórmula para mascotas, comida, agua ni biberón o jeringa. No es seguro improvisar una dieta o una forma de alimentarlo. El Wildlife Center of Virginia lo resume así: “Remember, never attempt to feed the baby raccoon.”

- Obsérvalo desde una distancia segura. No lo toques ni lo alimentes. Mantén alejados a niños y mascotas.
- Llama a un rehabilitador de fauna silvestre autorizado. Indica dónde lo encontraste, cómo se encuentra, cuánto tiempo lleva solo y si un perro o un gato tuvo contacto con él.
- Pide instrucciones específicas para tu situación. Que un mapache esté solo no significa necesariamente que sea huérfano: su madre podría regresar. La posibilidad de reunificación y los pasos adecuados dependen de las circunstancias y de la orientación local.
- Si te aconsejan contenerlo mientras llega la ayuda, sigue esas indicaciones. Roanoke Wildlife Rescue recomienda un recipiente seguro y ventilado en un lugar tranquilo, apartado de personas y mascotas. No le des comida ni agua durante la espera, salvo que el rehabilitador te lo indique expresamente.
Cuándo pedir ayuda urgente
Contacta pronto con un rehabilitador si el animal está herido, frío, débil o letárgico, si tiene moscas o gusanos, o si una mascota estuvo en contacto con él. Describe lo que observas y sigue las instrucciones del profesional; no intentes tratarlo o alimentarlo por tu cuenta.

Si hubo mordida, arañazo o contacto con saliva
Si el mapache te mordió o arañó, o su saliva entró en contacto con piel lesionada, los ojos, la nariz o la boca, lava el área y contacta cuanto antes con un profesional médico o el departamento de salud local para recibir instrucciones. La orientación de Virginia sobre mapaches y rabia es específica de ese estado; consulta a las autoridades sanitarias de tu zona para evaluar una posible exposición.
