For extra control, choose a caged or weight-activated feeder. Seed preferences and cleanup can help, but no setup is guaranteed to keep every squirrel away.
Start with feeder placement and a baffle
Squirrels can jump to feeders from nearby trees, limbs, roofs, or other launch points. UF/IFAS Extension recommends placing feeders 10–15 feet from tree trunks and overhanging limbs; the guidance notes that squirrels can jump up to 10 feet. Treat those figures as practical placement advice, not a guarantee for every yard or squirrel. UF/IFAS Extension’s feeder guidance

A baffle creates a physical obstacle between a squirrel and the food. Penn State Extension describes bowl- or umbrella-shaped baffles, while Oregon State University Extension recommends a metal or PVC sleeve at least 5 inches in diameter around a pole. A sleeve should be smooth and installed so a squirrel cannot simply climb around it. Penn State Extension’s advice on squirrels and feeders and Oregon State University Extension’s bird-feeding guide
For a pole-mounted feeder
Use a purpose-made pole baffle or a smooth sleeve on the pole, and keep the pole clear of nearby jump-off points. A baffle above or below the feeder may also help, depending on the design and how the feeder is mounted.

For a hanging feeder
A dome or tilting baffle may fit a suspended setup better than a pole-mounted barrier. Check whether the feeder can swing or tilt without the baffle becoming ineffective, and make sure the suspension point is not reachable from a nearby branch or structure.
Choose a feeder that limits access
If placement and a baffle are not enough, consider a feeder designed to restrict squirrels’ access. A cage-style feeder surrounds the seed ports with wire openings sized to admit smaller birds. A weight-activated feeder closes access when a heavier animal lands on its perch. Neither design is foolproof: a squirrel may exploit gaps, reach from above, or knock seed from a hopper if the feeder is poorly positioned. - A premium product for a lifetime of peaceful bird feeding. Our largest-capacity model, the Squirrel Buster Plus squirrel-proof bird feeder is also our most popular. Measuring 28" tall from base to hanger, the Squirrel Buster Plus holds a whopping 5.1 lbs of birdseed and features our patented Cardinal Ring System.
- TRULY SQUIRREL-PROOF: Openings in the shroud align with the feeding ports, providing birds access to the food. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing access to the ports. Squirrels and some large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
- PAYS FOR ITSELF IN SAVED SEED: Squirrels can no longer steal your wild bird seed. Over a short period of time this adds up to substantial savings that will pay for the purchase of your feeder.
- WEIGHT ADJUSTABLE: Patented weight adjustable spring mechanism controls how much weight the shroud will support allowing the birds to feed. Any additional weight will activate the closing mechanism.
- DETACHABLE COMPONENT SYSTEM: Squirrel Buster squirrel-proof bird feeders are designed to be dismantled by hand into individual components without the use of tools. This allows for easy cleaning and maintenance.
| Approach | How it helps | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Pole-mounted baffle or sleeve | Blocks or impedes climbing up the feeder pole. | Use a smooth barrier, provide clearance from jump-off points, and confirm it suits the pole and feeder. |
| Dome or tilting baffle | Interferes with access to a hanging feeder. | Make sure its position and movement do not leave a route to the seed. |
| Caged feeder | Limits access through its surrounding wire enclosure. | Check that the openings suit the bird species you want to attract and that the cage is securely mounted. |
| Weight-activated feeder | Closes access when a heavy animal lands on the perch. | Consider feeder weight, mounting strength, filling convenience, and the birds’ ability to use the perch. |
“Squirrel-proof” is a product label, not a promise that a feeder will defeat every squirrel. Oregon State University Extension wildlife specialist Dana Sanchez advises, “To thwart them, use baffles.” Oregon State University Extension, published November 2023 and reviewed in 2025

Changing seed may reduce interest, but it will not reliably exclude squirrels. University of Illinois Extension suggests that thistle may be less attractive to squirrels and notes that squirrels seem less interested in safflower than birds are. Treat either as an experiment alongside physical barriers, not as a substitute for them. University of Illinois Extension’s advice on feeding birds and preventing problems

- NEVER RUN OUT OF SEED - The clear reservoir makes it easy to monitor seed levels at a glance so you never run out during peak feeding times
Reduce spilled seed and secure spare food
Seed scattered beneath a feeder can draw squirrels and other wildlife to the area. Sweep or rake it up regularly, and consider a feeder design or tray arrangement that reduces spillage. Store unused seed in a tightly closed metal container; UF/IFAS Extension warns that squirrels can chew through even heavy plastic storage containers. Troubleshoot a squirrel that still reaches the feeder
- It climbs the pole: Check that the pole barrier is smooth, correctly positioned, and not bypassed by a nearby branch, fence, or structure.
- It jumps onto the feeder: Reassess the distance to trunks and overhanging limbs, then check for other launch points around the feeder.
- It reaches a hanging feeder: Reposition the feeder or use a dome or tilting baffle suited to the hanging arrangement.
- It gets seed from a cage or hopper: Inspect for gaps, access from above, and spilled seed. A different feeder design or better placement may be needed.
- The ground attracts squirrels: Clean up seed below the feeder and secure stored seed in a closed metal container.
