The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) describes these hairy, mottled spiders as the largest northern forest spiders of North America, with a body about 1 to 1½ inches long and a leg span of roughly 3 to 4 inches. Wolf spiders can also look imposing, while woodlouse hunters are smaller but distinctive and sometimes enter homes.
These are three notable large Connecticut spiders, not a scientifically ranked state top three. CAES’s house-spider fact sheet discusses species found in homes and nearby habitats rather than publishing an exhaustive size ranking for every spider in Connecticut.

How to compare a “big” spider
Spider size can mean two different measurements. Body length runs from the front of the cephalothorax (the fused head and thorax) to the end of the abdomen. Leg span is the distance from the tip of one extended leg to the tip of the opposite leg. A spider with a relatively short body can appear much larger when its legs are spread.

That distinction matters in Connecticut. The CAES figure for giant fishing spiders includes both body length and toe-to-toe spread. Its description of wolf spiders gives body length and notes that splayed legs make them look larger, but it does not provide a comparable leg-span measurement. Woodlouse-hunter dimensions refer to the body, not an extended-leg measurement.

| Spider group | Body size reported by CAES | What makes it look large | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant fishing spiders (Dolomedes spp.) | 1–1½ inches | Legs can span 3–4 inches toe to toe | Forests, shorelines and other aquatic or damp places; buildings near water |
| Wolf spiders (family Lycosidae) | Usually up to 1 inch | Hairy body and widely splayed legs | Grasslands, forest floors, moist or sandy ground; basements in fall |
| Woodlouse hunters (Dysdera crocata) | About ½–¾ inch | Stout body and conspicuously large mouthparts | Leaf litter, rotting wood, damp areas and occasionally indoors |
Connecticut has approximately 550 spider species, according to CAES. The three profiles below are practical identification groups for a large spider seen around a Connecticut home, not proof that no other species can equal or exceed them.
1. Giant fishing spiders (Dolomedes spp.)
Size and appearance
Giant fishing spiders are the clearest answer to the question “What is the biggest spider in Connecticut?” CAES reports a body length of 1 to 1½ inches and a spread of 3 to 4 inches from toe to toe. Its fact sheet calls them “the largest northern forest spiders of North America.” The spiders are hairy and generally mottled grayish black, a pattern that helps them blend into bark, rocks, and shaded ground.
A large specimen on a wall can therefore seem much bigger than its body measurement suggests. When comparing a photograph or a live spider, look at the abdomen and cephalothorax separately rather than measuring the full reach of every leg. Leg position changes the apparent span from one moment to the next.

Fishing spiders are associated with both forest and aquatic environments. They may be found near ponds, streams, wetlands, and wooded shorelines. A boathouse, shed, porch, or other building close to water can provide a route indoors, especially when the spider is searching for shelter. Finding one near water is a useful clue, but location alone cannot identify it; other large wandering spiders use damp habitats too.

How they hunt
Unlike spiders that wait in a web to intercept flying insects, fishing spiders actively search for prey. CAES says their diet is mainly aquatic insects, although they can also catch small fish and tadpoles. Their association with water and this hunting behavior explain why a very large spider may appear on a dock, beside a stream, or in a waterside building rather than in a dry corner of a house.
Are they dangerous?
CAES says giant fishing spiders are not known to bite people and that their venom is not considered medically significant. That is a qualified risk assessment, not a guarantee that handling one is safe. Any wild spider can defend itself if squeezed, trapped against skin, or repeatedly disturbed, so observe it without touching it.
2. Wolf spiders (family Lycosidae)
How to recognize one
Wolf spiders are large, hairy, active hunters with mottled gray and black markings. CAES gives a usual body length of up to 1 inch. Their legs are often held wide and low, making the spider appear larger than its body measurement. They are generally more robust-looking than delicate web-building spiders and may move quickly across a floor when startled.
Color is not enough for a firm identification because many Connecticut spiders have gray, brown, or black patterns. A reliable observation should combine body shape, the spider’s running behavior, and the habitat in which it was found. Close-up identification may require a clear photograph or an expert examination.

Habitat and seasonal encounters
Wolf spiders occur in grasslands, on forest floors, and in moist or sandy landscapes. Individuals living near houses may enter basements, particularly as outdoor temperatures fall in autumn. A basement sighting does not mean the spider has established a web colony indoors; wolf spiders are wandering hunters rather than predators that depend on a capture web.
Virginia Cooperative Extension likewise describes wolf spiders, along with nursery web spiders, as wandering hunters. That regional description provides useful behavioral context, but its size figures apply to Virginia and should not be substituted for the Connecticut measurements supplied by CAES.
Bite risk
CAES says wolf spiders prefer to flee, rarely bite people, and have venom it does not consider medically significant. Do not pick one up to test its identity. If a spider is in a living area, use a container-and-card method to move it outside instead of crushing it or trapping it against your skin.

Distinctive anatomy
Woodlouse hunters are smaller than giant fishing and wolf spiders, with a body about ½ to ¾ inch long. They are easy to notice because of their contrasting colors: a pale gray abdomen, reddish-brown cephalothorax, and reddish-brown legs. Their most striking feature is a pair of large mouthparts adapted to pierce woodlice, sowbugs, and pillbugs.

Those mouthparts can make a woodlouse hunter look threatening in a close photograph. They are a feeding adaptation, not evidence that the spider is seeking people. Body length remains the appropriate comparison; the large jaws should not be counted as leg span or treated as extra body length.
Where they are found
Look for this species in damp areas, under leaf litter, beneath stones, and around rotting wood where woodlice are abundant. It may wander indoors from these microhabitats, especially through ground-level cracks or around stored firewood. A sighting in a cool basement or utility area is consistent with its habitat preferences, but an indoor location by itself does not identify the species.
Why include a smaller spider in a “biggest” guide?
Woodlouse hunters do not match the dimensions of the first two groups. They are included because CAES lists them among the larger spiders encountered around Connecticut homes and because their unusual appearance often prompts identification questions. If your spider has a reddish front half, pale abdomen, and oversized jaws, those features are more useful than a quick impression of overall size.

What to do when you find a large spider indoors
Use a glass and stiff card
- Ask other people and pets to give the spider space. Do not corner it with bare hands.
- Place a clear drinking glass or similar smooth container over the spider when it is on a flat surface.
- Slide a stiff piece of paper or thin card under the rim until the spider is fully contained.
- Keep the card pressed against the glass, carry the container outdoors, and release the spider in a sheltered spot away from doors.
- Wash your hands after removing the container and check the area for gaps, damp debris, or clutter that could provide another entry route.
CAES presents this glass-and-card approach as a humane, no-purchase method. Move slowly; sudden pressure against the spider is more likely to provoke defensive behavior than a deliberate, steady motion.

Consider a long-handled spider catcher
Commercial nonlethal critter-catchers use a soft-bristle trap on a long handle, allowing more distance from the spider. A long-handled spider catcher is optional, and no particular model is established here as superior. The same rule applies: contain the spider gently and release it outdoors rather than carrying it to another room.
Reducing repeat encounters
- Control moisture: Repair leaks and improve ventilation in basements, crawl spaces, sheds, and other damp areas.
- Manage shelter: Keep leaf litter, firewood, and rotting boards away from foundations where practical.
- Seal easy entry points: Check door sweeps, window screens, and cracks around pipes and utility penetrations.
- Use outdoor lighting thoughtfully: Lights attract insects, which can in turn attract hunting spiders near doors and windows.
- Inspect waterside buildings: Boathouses and sheds beside ponds or streams are especially likely places to encounter fishing spiders.
These measures reduce opportunities for spiders to enter living spaces; they do not eliminate every spider from a property. Spiders are part of the local food web and often help consume insects.
When a bite or skin mark needs attention
An unexplained red mark, blister, or sore is not enough to diagnose a spider bite. CAES cautions that identification is more reliable when the spider is captured at the time of the incident and examined by an expert. Do not deliberately handle a spider to obtain a specimen. If a bite is suspected, wash the area, avoid scratching, and seek medical advice for severe pain, spreading redness, breathing difficulty, fever, or other concerning symptoms.

For identification, take a sharp photograph from a safe distance and record where and when the spider was found. A captured specimen can be useful only if it was contained without additional handling and can be transported safely. A local extension office, museum, or qualified arachnology expert may be able to assess a clear image or specimen.
What the size evidence does—and does not—show
The Connecticut measurements in this guide come from the CAES fact sheet Spiders Found in the House, authored by Dr. Gale E. Ridge and Katherine Dugas. The displayed copy does not show a publication year. It identifies giant fishing spiders as the largest northern forest spiders of North America and supplies the Connecticut-relevant body and leg-span figures used above.
Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2021 publication adds regional context by describing fishing spiders as among the largest spiders in Virginia, reaching up to 3 inches in that state’s account and occurring mainly near water or in moist woods. That is a Virginia-specific figure, not a Connecticut measurement, so it should not be used to enlarge the Connecticut sizes reported by CAES.
Consequently, the safest answer is practical rather than an official ranking: giant fishing spiders are the standout large Connecticut group; wolf spiders are another large, conspicuous hunter; and woodlouse hunters are a smaller but distinctive household visitor. A photograph, habitat clues, and body proportions are more dependable than a startled estimate of leg span.
