Connecticut does not have an official list of eight state animals. Connecticut law names one state animal—the sperm whale—and separately designates a state bird, insect, shellfish, fish and dog. Those six animals belong to different legal categories, so adding the categories does not create eight state animals.
The current statute identifies the state animal as the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. The Connecticut Secretary of the State says the General Assembly made that designation in 1975, linking it to the state’s whaling history and the species’ conservation plight.

What Connecticut law actually names
The controlling list is in Chapter 33 of the Connecticut General Statutes, particularly sections 3-109a through 3-109e. The structure matters: the law does not provide a ranked collection of animals under one heading. It assigns different animals to different symbol categories. Section 3-109a states, “The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, shall be the state animal.” Other sections identify the state bird, state insect, state shellfish, state fish and state dog.

The official symbol pages and the 2023 Connecticut Blue Book reviewed for this subject do not identify two additional animals that would complete an eight-animal list. A page that presents eight “official state animals” without explaining these categories is therefore blending separate designations or repeating an unsupported count.

The safest way to answer a question about Connecticut’s animals is to state the legal category first. “Connecticut’s state animal” has one answer. “Connecticut’s animal-related state symbols” has six answers in the statutory and official-symbol material summarized here.
Connecticut’s animal-related state symbols at a glance
| Legal category | Designation | Scientific name in the cited law | Designation date | What the official source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State animal | Sperm whale | Physeter macrocephalus | 1975 | Named as the state animal in Connecticut General Statutes § 3-109a; the Secretary of the State attributes the designation to the General Assembly. |
| State bird | American robin | Turdus migratorius | Not stated in the cited section | A separate bird designation in Chapter 33. |
| State insect | Praying mantis | Mantis religiosa | Not stated in the cited section | A separate insect designation in Chapter 33. |
| State shellfish | Eastern oyster | Crassostrea virginica | Not stated in the cited section | A separate shellfish designation in Chapter 33. |
| State fish | American shad | Alosa sapidissima | Not stated in the cited section | A separate fish designation in Chapter 33. |
| State dog | Siberian Husky | Not stated in the cited statutory section | Not stated in the cited section | A separate dog designation in Chapter 33. |
“Not stated” in the date column means that the cited statutory section or official summary supplied for this article does not give an enactment year. It is not evidence that the designation lacks a history; it simply avoids assigning an unverified date.
The state animal: sperm whale
The sperm whale is Connecticut’s sole state animal under the current statute. Its legal scientific name is Physeter macrocephalus, and that wording should be preferred when accuracy matters. The statutory sentence is short and unambiguous: “The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, shall be the state animal.”

The office describes the choice as recognition of the whale’s special contribution to Connecticut history as well as its conservation plight. That explanation gives the symbol two dimensions: it recalls an important maritime industry and calls attention to a species whose survival has required protection.

Connecticut’s whaling connection
During the nineteenth century, Connecticut ports, including New London and Mystic, were connected to the whaling trade. Ships, crews and businesses tied to those ports participated in an industry that shaped coastal communities and the state’s maritime identity. Selecting the sperm whale acknowledged that history without treating commercial whaling as a current activity or a conservation model.
A symbol with a conservation message
The state’s explanation also points to the sperm whale’s conservation plight. That wording is significant: the designation is not merely a reference to a historical industry. It can be read as a reminder that cultural history and wildlife stewardship are linked. The official material supplied for this article does not provide a population estimate, a recovery percentage or another current numerical measure, so none is presented here.
The five separate animal categories
American robin — state bird
Connecticut’s state bird is the American robin, Turdus migratorius. It is not a second state animal in the legal sense used by § 3-109a; it is the animal selected for the state-bird category. The scientific name appears in the cited statutory text. When a school assignment asks for Connecticut’s “state animal,” the robin should not replace the sperm whale simply because birds are animals in ordinary biological language.
Praying mantis — state insect
The praying mantis, Mantis religiosa, holds the state-insect designation. Insects are biologically animals, but Connecticut’s legal framework treats “state insect” as its own symbol class. Listing the mantis alongside the sperm whale is correct only when the heading says that the list covers animal-related state symbols or separate categories.

Eastern oyster — state shellfish
The Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is Connecticut’s state shellfish. Shellfish is a distinct statutory category, not an extra state-animal slot. The designation also reflects the importance of coastal and estuarine resources in a state whose identity includes Long Island Sound, but the legal point is the category itself: oyster and sperm whale do not share one combined “state animal” list.
American shad — state fish
Connecticut names the American shad, Alosa sapidissima, as its state fish. This is another separate designation in Chapter 33. A list that counts the shad as one of several state animals may be using “animal” informally, but it should not imply that the statute creates a multi-animal state-animal roster.
Siberian Husky — state dog
The Siberian Husky is Connecticut’s state dog. The cited statutory section identifies the breed but does not state a scientific name. Because a breed designation and a species designation serve different purposes, the Husky should remain in the state-dog category rather than being presented as an additional state animal under § 3-109a.
Why the number eight appears to be wrong
The title “8 Official State Animals of Connecticut” can arise from counting every animal-related symbol a state has, then adding categories that are not present in the law or counting one category twice. In Connecticut’s case, the official material establishes six named categories: animal, bird, insect, shellfish, fish and dog. It does not supply two more categories or two additional animals to reach eight.

There is also a language trap. In everyday speech, a robin, mantis, oyster, shad and Husky are all animals. In a statute, however, the category label determines what the designation means. “State animal” is a legal title, while “state bird” and “state fish” are parallel titles. Treating the biological meaning of animal as if it were the statute’s category name creates the misleading count.
The qualified conclusion is important. The official symbol sources reviewed here do not support an eight-animal list. That conclusion does not claim that no other Connecticut law anywhere could mention an animal for another purpose; it says that the state-symbol authorities used for this question do not establish eight official state animals.

For the legal name, use the current Connecticut General Statutes. The statute supplies Physeter macrocephalus for the sperm whale and gives the scientific names listed above for the bird, insect, shellfish and fish. It is the best source when you need exact wording, category boundaries or a quotation.

The Connecticut Secretary of the State’s 2023 Blue Book provides an official cross-check by listing the sperm whale as the state animal in its “State Emblems and Symbols” material. The Blue Book does not turn the separate bird, insect, shellfish, fish and dog designations into an eight-animal list. If a historic reference uses a different scientific spelling or taxonomy, the current statutory wording takes priority for a present-day answer.

- For a legal quotation, reproduce the statutory sentence exactly and identify it as Connecticut General Statutes § 3-109a.
How to explain Connecticut’s symbols without misleading readers
A clear classroom handout, museum label or website entry can answer the likely questions in a few orderly steps:
- Answer the singular question first. Say that Connecticut’s state animal is the sperm whale.
- Give the legal scientific name. Add Physeter macrocephalus if the audience needs the formal identification.
- Add the designation year with its qualification. The Secretary of the State identifies 1975 as the year the General Assembly designated the sperm whale.
- Explain the historical reason. Mention Connecticut’s nineteenth-century whaling connections, including New London and Mystic, and the official reference to conservation concerns.
- Present the other animals under their own headings. Label robin, praying mantis, oyster, shad and Siberian Husky by category rather than calling them additional state animals.
- Correct the count. State that the official material establishes six animal-related categories, not eight state animals.
This order prevents a common error: readers learn the direct answer before encountering the broader list of symbols, so the sperm whale remains clearly identified as the state animal.
Quick reference for common questions
- What is Connecticut’s state animal? The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus.
- When was it designated? The Secretary of the State identifies 1975.
- Why was it chosen? The official explanation connects it to Connecticut’s whaling history and the sperm whale’s conservation plight.
- Is the American robin the state animal? No. It is the state bird.
- Does Connecticut officially have eight state animals? The cited statutes, Secretary of the State material and 2023 Blue Book do not establish such a list.
- How many animal-related state symbols are named in those sources? Six categories: state animal, bird, insect, shellfish, fish and dog.
- What is Connecticut’s state fish? The American shad, Alosa sapidissima.
- What is Connecticut’s state dog? The Siberian Husky; the cited statutory section does not provide a scientific name.
Bottom line for writers and teachers
Use “Connecticut’s state animal” for the sperm whale alone. If you want a broader lesson about the state’s fauna-related emblems, call it “Connecticut’s animal-related state symbols” and list the six statutory categories separately. That wording preserves the law’s distinctions, includes the 1975 historical context and avoids presenting an unsupported eight-animal count as official.
