The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) has no official, statistically ranked list of nine “most dangerous” animals. Trail-specific guidance from the Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) directly identifies five wildlife subjects: black bears, grizzly bears, moose, mountain lions and rattlesnakes. Their presence and encounter risk vary across the trail’s roughly 3,100 miles in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. The practical lesson is more useful than a forced ranking: secure attractants, keep your distance, recognize species-specific behavior and follow the land manager’s current rules for the section you are hiking.
Is there really a ranked list of nine dangerous animals on the CDT?
No. Neither the CDTC guidance nor the other authoritative sources reviewed here establishes a complete ranking of exactly nine species by attack frequency, injury rate or overall danger. “Most dangerous” is therefore an editorial description, not an official statistic. The five animals below are the species directly named in CDT safety guidance. A sighting is not automatically a dangerous incident, and a species’ presence in a state does not mean hikers commonly encounter it.

The CDT crosses very different habitats, elevations and jurisdictions. Rules in a national park may differ from those on national forest, wilderness or state land. Treat this as a preparation and response guide, then check the land manager for your exact route, current closures and seasonal wildlife notices.
Where wildlife risk changes along the Continental Divide Trail
The CDTC describes the National Scenic Trail as about 3,100 miles long across New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. That distance includes deserts, high alpine terrain, dense forest, river corridors and protected wilderness. Wildlife exposure is consequently segment-specific rather than uniform.

Black-bear habitat occurs along most of the CDT, according to the CDTC. Grizzly presence is more geographically bounded, concentrated in portions of the northern Rocky Mountain region. Mountain lions occur in all five CDT states but are described by the CDTC as very rare and unlikely to be seen. Rattlesnakes are described as common along the trail. Moose can appear in suitable forest and wetland habitats, particularly in northern and high-country sections.
Population figures need careful interpretation. The CDTC cites an estimate of around 2,000 grizzly bears in protected parks and wilderness areas within the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, Washington, Idaho and Montana, and an estimate of more than 17,000 black bears in Colorado. These are CDTC-published estimates for the stated geographic areas, not a current census of bears along the entire CDT and not directly comparable trail-wide counts. See the CDTC’s bear guidance for its geographic explanation.
The five animals directly named in CDT safety guidance
| Animal | What the trail guidance says | Primary risk | Core prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black bear | Habitat occurs along most of the CDT. | Defensive behavior around food, cubs or a surprised animal. | Secure food and attractants; never feed or approach; carry accessible bear spray where appropriate. |
| Grizzly bear | Present in parts of the northern Rocky Mountain region. | Large, powerful defensive animal, especially when surprised at close range. | Food storage, extra awareness in dense brush and periodic human noise in grizzly country. |
| Moose | Named by CDTC as a trail wildlife hazard. | Close-range defensive charges, especially when a moose is blocking the trail. | Do not approach; take a wide berth and wait or detour. |
| Mountain lion | Lives in all CDT states; sightings are described as very rare. | Predatory attack is unlikely but potentially severe. | Do not run; appear large, make noise, maintain eye contact and preserve an escape route. |
| Rattlesnake | Described by CDTC as common along the CDT. | Venomous bite when a snake is surprised, cornered or handled. | Watch where you step and place your hands; never touch or pick one up. |
Black bears
Black-bear habitat extends along most of the route, so every hiker should understand attractant control. Food, rubbish, toiletries and other scented items can draw a bear toward camp. Store them exactly as required by the local land manager, keep cooking and sleeping practices consistent with that rule and never feed wildlife.

The CDTC recommends bear spray in bear country and calls it a must-have for the northern CDT. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service likewise advises carrying spray, learning how to use it and keeping it immediately accessible rather than buried in a pack. Spray is a last-resort deterrent, not a guarantee of safety. Read the current instructions before your trip and practice removing the safety clip without aiming at people.
Grizzly bears
Grizzlies are one of the two bear species identified by the CDTC on the trail, but their distribution is not the same as black bears’ broad habitat range. In grizzly country, the CDTC suggests making periodic noise, particularly in dense brush, so a bear is less likely to be surprised at close distance. A simple call such as “Hey, bear!” can announce your presence; do not use noise as an excuse to approach or pursue an animal.
Bear safety is a system: secure attractants, travel attentively, keep spray accessible and give any bear a clear, generous route away from you. Follow the food-storage order in force for the specific forest, park or wilderness unit, because requirements can change by jurisdiction and season.

Moose
Moose can look calm while remaining highly defensive at close range. The CDTC’s direct instruction is to give a moose blocking the trail a wide berth. Do not try to squeeze past, photograph it from close range or force it to move. Back away, wait for the animal to leave or take a broad detour that keeps substantial space between you and the moose. A cow with a calf and a bull during the rut deserve especially conservative treatment, but the safe decision is distance in every encounter.
Mountain lions
The CDTC says mountain lions occur in all states along the CDT, yet are very rare and unlikely to be seen. That low sighting probability does not make close behavior irrelevant. If you encounter one, do not run: running can trigger pursuit and removes your ability to monitor the animal.
Guidance from the National Park Service for Rocky Mountain National Park is to face the lion, stand upright, appear larger, make noise, give it an escape route and fight back if it attacks. Those instructions are park-specific; use them as a general encounter principle only where they do not conflict with local guidance. Keep children close, do not crouch to take a picture and continue watching the animal while you slowly create distance.

Rattlesnakes
Rattlesnakes are the common species in this list, so prevention depends on ordinary trail habits. Look before stepping onto rocks or into grass, check handholds before climbing and avoid reaching into holes or cracks you cannot see. A snake that is coiled or rattling is giving you a warning; stop, increase distance and let it move away. Never touch, handle or pick up a rattlesnake, even if it appears dead.
After a bite, the CDTC advises getting off the trail and finding a road as soon as possible. A venomous bite can become a medical emergency. Seek emergency medical help promptly, follow current local medical instructions and do not improvise treatment while delaying evacuation.

How to prepare before your CDT section
- Identify the jurisdiction. List every park, forest, wilderness and state-land segment on your itinerary. Open each land manager’s current wildlife, food-storage and closure page before departure.
- Control attractants. Plan storage for food, rubbish, toiletries and cooking equipment. Follow the exact container or hanging requirement where one applies; do not assume one method is legal everywhere.
- Carry deterrence correctly. In bear country, carry bear spray as recommended by the CDTC and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Know its operation and keep it reachable on your body or pack strap, not inside a buried compartment. The agency’s safety information is at https://www.fws.gov/bear-safety.
- Adjust travel behavior. Make periodic noise in grizzly country, especially where vegetation blocks sightlines. Slow down in brush, around water and on narrow bends where an animal may be hidden.
- Share a response plan. Every member of the group should know who carries spray, how to create distance and how to call for help. Keep an emergency communication method available for sections without reliable service.

What to do during an encounter
If you see a bear
- Stop and avoid approaching, following or surrounding it.
- Give the bear a clear escape route and increase distance slowly.
- Do not run or climb a tree as an improvised response.
- If a bear approaches and you are in bear country, have your accessible spray ready and follow its instructions if deployment becomes necessary.
- Once safe, leave the area and report a significant encounter to the responsible land manager.
If a moose blocks the trail
- Do not attempt to pass close to the animal.
- Back away until you can take a wide berth, wait for it to move or choose a distant detour.
- Keep dogs under control where they are permitted; a dog can provoke a defensive response.
If you encounter a mountain lion
- Face it, remain upright and make yourself look larger.
- Make noise and keep an escape route open for the lion.
- Do not run or turn your back.
- If attacked, fight back. Rocky Mountain National Park’s wildlife guidance is at https://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/wildlife-safety.htm.
If you see a rattlesnake
- Stop, locate the snake and move around it only after you have enough space.
- Never prod, capture or relocate it.
- After a bite, prioritize evacuation and urgent medical care rather than attempting an improvised remedy.
Distances, reporting and emergency decisions
Distance rules are jurisdiction-specific. Rocky Mountain National Park advises staying at least 120 feet from black bears, moose and mountain lions within that park. That figure should not be treated as a universal CDT rule: another park, forest or wilderness unit may publish a different minimum or additional restrictions. Check the applicable land manager before each section.
If an encounter becomes an emergency, the CDTC says to call 911 or the local emergency number first, then report the incident to the CDTC. Give rescuers your location, trail or access point, injuries and the animal involved. Do not remain nearby to obtain video or photographs.
Why a five-species guide is safer than inventing four more
A numerical headline can suggest precision that the available evidence does not support. The five animals here are selected because a CDT-specific source names them and supplies usable prevention or response advice. They differ on four important axes: where they occur, how often the source says they are encountered, how severe an encounter could be and what a hiker can do to prevent one.
