What do a Cornish Rex and a Sphynx look like?
In a side-by-side photo, the coat and silhouette are the quickest clues. A Cornish Rex has a visible, close-lying coat of soft, short waves. A Sphynx appears hairless, but it may have a fine layer of down, and short hair can occur in some areas. The Sphynx’s skin folds are usually more conspicuous.

For useful comparison photos, look for clear labels and similar poses: a side view makes the Cornish Rex’s arch and tucked waist easier to see, while a relaxed Sphynx photo can show its folds and rounded build. Photos can’t establish coat texture or how much down an individual Sphynx has.

How do their personalities compare?
Both breeds are described by their breed associations as social, active, and inclined to seek human company. Cornish Rex descriptions emphasize athletic playfulness and attention-seeking; Sphynx descriptions emphasize curiosity, affection, and an outgoing, people-oriented nature. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees: an individual cat’s temperament also depends on its own history and personality.

Which breed needs more grooming and daily care?
Cornish Rex: little combing, but check ears and toes
The Cornish Rex’s short coat generally does not need regular combing, according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). Wax can build up in the ears, and ears or toes may become greasy, so check them as part of routine care. An occasional bath may be useful if the cat needs one; the breed descriptions do not set a universal bathing interval. (CFA; TICA)
Sphynx: regular attention to skin and ears
With less coat to absorb skin oils, the Sphynx needs more direct skin care than the Cornish Rex. The International Cat Association (TICA) recommends weekly ear cleaning, along with regular nail, eye, and dental care. Follow veterinary guidance for your cat’s skin and cleaning routine rather than assuming every Sphynx needs the same bathing schedule. (TICA)

How should you manage temperature and sun exposure?
Both breeds can be sensitive to cold and vulnerable to sunburn because they have limited coat protection. Keep either cat out of prolonged direct sun and provide a comfortable indoor environment. CFA notes that a sweater may be an option for a Cornish Rex in cold conditions; clothing is not necessary for every cat, and fit and comfort matter. TICA advises protecting Sphynx from cold but does not specifically prescribe clothing. (CFA; TICA)
What health questions should you ask?
The available breed-association descriptions are not comparative studies of disease rates, so they do not establish that one breed is healthier overall. They also differ in how they summarize Cornish Rex health, which is worth clarifying when discussing a particular cat.

Ask a responsible breeder what health information is available for the kitten’s parents and relatives, including any relevant screening, and discuss the individual cat’s history with a veterinarian. The sources cited here do not provide comparable prevalence figures, lifespan statistics, or overall health outcomes for the two breeds.
Which breed may suit your home better?
Choose based on the routine and environment you can provide, not on a promise that either breed will behave or stay healthy in a particular way.

- Consider a Cornish Rex if you prefer a visible, wavy coat, a slender athletic build, and relatively little coat combing—and are prepared to check ears and toes and keep the cat comfortable in cold weather.

- For either breed, consider how much daily interaction and play you can offer, and ask about the individual cat’s temperament and health history before choosing.
Are either breed hypoallergenic?
No cat breed can be promised to avoid allergic reactions. TICA states on its Cornish Rex breed page: “There is NO hypo-allergenic cat.” A reduced or unusual coat does not establish that a cat will be suitable for someone with allergies. (TICA)
