Corydoras are peaceful, social South American catfish that spend much of their time foraging along the aquarium floor. The right care plan depends on the exact species: adult size, temperature preference, activity level, and suitable group size are not identical across the trade. Identify the species first, then provide a mature, clean aquarium, a proper shoal, smooth foraging surfaces, compatible tankmates, and food that actually reaches the bottom.

This guide explains how to choose a cory, size and equip its tank, manage water and feeding, recognize normal behavior, and approach breeding without treating any one generalized range as universal.

What are cory catfish?

“Cory catfish” is a trade name used for many species in the genus Corydoras. They are small, armored, bottom-oriented catfish from South America. Their barbels help them search the substrate for food, and their social behavior is easiest to see when several members of the same species are kept together.

Species selection matters more than the label on a store tank. A pygmy cory has very different space and swimming needs from a larger species, while wild-caught fish can arrive with different water requirements from long-established captive-bred lines. Retail identification can also be imprecise, so record the scientific name when a seller provides one and verify it before building the aquarium around a temperature or size assumption.

Popular types and how they differ

The following are common choices in the aquarium trade. Common names can cover color forms or several closely related fish, so use the scientific name as the more reliable reference.

Trade name Scientific name Useful identification and care notes
Bronze cory Corydoras aeneus A widely kept standard-size cory; albino fish are a color form of this species.
Albino cory Corydoras aeneus (albino form) Care is generally comparable to bronze corys because the underlying species is the same.
Panda cory Corydoras panda Recognizable by dark eye and body markings; keep a same-species group rather than a single fish.
Emerald green cory Corydoras splendens A larger-looking, metallic green trade fish; confirm the seller’s identification because “emerald” names are sometimes used loosely.
Pygmy cory Corydoras pygmaeus Unusually small and often active in midwater as well as near the bottom; it may suit a smaller aquarium than standard-size species when the group and filtration are appropriate.
Other pygmy species Corydoras hastatus or Corydoras habrosus Small species with their own proportions and behavior; do not assume every “pygmy” has identical requirements.
Fowler’s cory Corydoras fowleri FishBase’s 2016 record lists 21–24°C and a maximum standard length of 6.5 cm; the temperature entry cites Burgess’s 1992 atlas. Treat this as a species record, not a universal cory range.
Corydoras acutus Corydoras acutus A FishBase search-result record lists 25–28°C and a maximum standard length of 5.5 cm, with occurrence in northern Peru and Ecuador; because the underlying page was not available, use the figures cautiously and verify the fish’s source.

These examples show why a single “cory catfish temperature” or “minimum tank” answer can be misleading. Match the aquarium to the identified species, its adult size, and whether it is captive-bred or wild-caught.

How many cory catfish should you keep?

Corydoras are shoaling fish, not solitary scavengers. Aquarium Co-Op recommends six or more of one species, while Aqueon describes groups of five or more. A practical target is six or more of the same species whenever the aquarium can support that group comfortably. A mixed collection of one or two fish from several species may look varied, but it does not provide the same social structure as a proper group.

Group size must be considered with floor area, adult body length, filtration, and tankmates. If you cannot provide an appropriate group, choose a smaller species or postpone the purchase rather than keeping one cory as a “test” fish.

What size tank do cory catfish need?

There is no single minimum that fits every cory. Aquarium Co-Op suggests 20 gallons or more for most varieties and says a 10-gallon aquarium may suit dwarf species. Aqueon recommends 30 gallons for most species and notes that pygmy corys can be kept in smaller aquariums. The difference reflects how adult size, group size, tank footprint, filtration, and community stocking change the workload.

Situation Published guidance How to apply it
Most standard-size varieties 20 gallons or more (Aquarium Co-Op); 30 gallons preferred (Aqueon) Choose the larger option when possible, especially for six or more fish, a long-bodied species, or a busy community.
Dwarf or pygmy varieties 10 gallons may suit dwarf species (Aquarium Co-Op); Aqueon allows smaller aquariums for pygmies Use a tank with useful floor area, gentle flow, stable parameters, and a full same-species group. A tall, narrow tank is less useful than a longer footprint.
Mixed community aquarium No universal volume stated Base the decision on the cory’s adult size plus the space and waste load of every other fish.

Use the aquarium’s footprint as well as its labeled volume. Corys spend much of the day searching the bottom, so uninterrupted floor space, shaded retreats, and open feeding areas are more valuable than extra height alone.

Build a mature, safe aquarium

Cycle and filtration

Aqueon advises against adding Corydoras to a new or neglected aquarium. Establish biological filtration before purchase, and add fish only when the system can process waste consistently. Good filtration, regular partial water changes, and routine testing help maintain the clean conditions these bottom feeders need. Keep the filter intake protected so small fish cannot be pulled against it, and avoid blasting the floor with a current that prevents them from resting or feeding.

Substrate and floor design

Choose smooth sand or fine gravel with rounded edges. Aqueon specifically warns against jagged material that can injure barbels; Aquarium Co-Op also favors smooth sand or gravel. Do not assume that every gravel substrate causes barbel loss: poor water quality is another possible contributor, so inspect both the substrate and maintenance routine if barbels look shortened or damaged.

Leave a clear area where sinking food can be found. Add plants, wood, caves, or other cover that creates shade and escape routes, while keeping enough open bottom for the entire group to forage. Secure decorations so a digging fish cannot undermine them.

Water parameters

Published broad ranges overlap but are not identical. Aqueon gives 74–80°F (about 23–27°C) and pH 7.0–8.0 for most captive-bred cory cats. Aquarium Co-Op gives 72–82°F (about 22–28°C) and pH 6.5–7.8. Aqueon notes that wild-caught fish may require pH 5.5–7.0 and alkalinity below 3° dKH.

Fish and source Published range Important qualification
Most captive-bred cory cats 74–80°F; pH 7.0–8.0 (Aqueon) A general guide, not a species-specific prescription.
Broad aquarium-care range 72–82°F; pH 6.5–7.8 (Aquarium Co-Op) Use only as a starting range after confirming the species.
Wild-caught fish noted by Aqueon pH 5.5–7.0; alkalinity below 3° dKH Source and acclimation history matter; do not force every fish into this chemistry.

Do not combine the outer limits into one “ideal” number. Stability, cleanliness, oxygenation, and a gradual acclimation process are more important than chasing a value that does not fit the species or source. Test regularly, make partial water changes, and investigate any detectable ammonia or nitrite rather than waiting for visible symptoms.

What should you feed your cory catfish?

Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders, not dedicated algae eaters. They may pick at particles and biofilm, but algae alone will not meet their nutritional needs. Use a varied, high-quality diet that sinks quickly.

  • Tropical granules and algae rounds: Include as part of a varied diet rather than treating algae rounds as the complete menu.

Aqueon advises feeding what the fish consume in two to three minutes, once or twice daily. Start with a small portion, watch the bottom, and adjust. Fast midwater tankmates can eat everything before it sinks, so feed at a time when surface fish are less aggressive, distribute food in several spots, or use a sinking wafer that reaches the corys quickly. Remove uneaten food before it decomposes.

“Sinking wafers for cory catfish” is a useful search description when comparing foods, but no product replaces observation. The correct food is the one your fish can find, swallow safely, and finish without leaving the aquarium dirty.

Tankmates and day-to-day behavior

Most Corydoras are peaceful community fish. Pair them with similarly peaceful species that will not bite, swallow, or relentlessly harass them. Avoid aggressive bottom dwellers and fish large enough to treat a cory as prey. Provide cover so the group can retreat, but do not overcrowd the bottom with competing territorial fish.

An occasional dash to the surface to gulp air can be normal Corydoras behavior. Constant surface gasping, frantic movement, or repeated trips accompanied by lethargy are different: check oxygenation, temperature, waste levels, and recent changes immediately. Healthy fish should spend time foraging, resting in cover, and moving together rather than hiding continuously.

Can you breed cory catfish in an aquarium?

Yes, Corydoras can spawn in home aquariums, but success varies by species and condition. They deposit adhesive eggs on plant leaves, decorations, and aquarium glass. Spawning may coincide with a drop in barometric pressure or temperature; some breeders use a partial water change with slightly cooler water as a trigger. These are possibilities, not guarantees.

Conditioning and spawning

  1. Maintain excellent water quality and feed the adults a nutritious, varied diet.
  2. Provide plants, spawning mops, or smooth surfaces where adhesive eggs can be attached.
  3. Observe for eggs on glass, leaves, and decor after conditioning or a water change.
  4. If the adults eat the eggs or other fish reach them, move the eggs or protect the spawning area; handling must be gentle to avoid crushing them.

Raising fry

Eggs left in a community tank may be eaten. Aquarium Co-Op describes improving survival by removing or protecting eggs and feeding newly free-swimming fry baby brine shrimp or powdered fry food. Keep food portions tiny and water quality high, because fry are less tolerant of pollution and uneaten food than adults. Do not promise that every spawn will hatch or that every species breeds on the same schedule.

Common problems and practical fixes

The corys are thin even though the tank is fed

Check whether food reaches the bottom before fast tankmates consume it. Add a sinking food, spread portions across the floor, and watch an entire feeding rather than assuming that pellets disappearing at the surface fed the corys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Barbels look worn or shortened

Review water quality first, then inspect the substrate for sharp edges. Replace jagged material with smooth sand or rounded fine gravel, improve maintenance, and keep the bottom free of decomposing food.

One fish is hiding while the others are active

Confirm the group size, check for bullying, and test water after any change in temperature or chemistry. Corydoras are social; persistent isolation is a reason to inspect the environment rather than simply adding another fish without checking capacity.

The fish gasp at the surface repeatedly

Occasional air gulping can be normal, but constant gasping warrants an immediate check of oxygen exchange, filtration, temperature, and waste levels. Increase surface movement safely and perform an appropriate partial water change if testing indicates a problem.

A simple setup and maintenance checklist

  • Identify the species and confirm its adult size and source.
  • Select a long enough footprint for the intended group; use the more conservative tank volume when uncertain.
  • Cycle the aquarium and verify stable, clean water before adding fish.
  • Install effective filtration with gentle, well-distributed flow.
  • Use smooth sand or rounded fine gravel, with open feeding space and secure cover.
  • Buy a proper same-species group, commonly six or more when capacity permits.
  • Offer sinking, varied foods and watch each feeding.
  • Perform regular partial water changes and test after maintenance or unusual behavior.
  • Choose peaceful tankmates that will not compete aggressively for the bottom.
  • Treat breeding as a project: condition adults, protect adhesive eggs, and prepare suitable fry food.
